This one's nice as well.
Also, going by the links there are 21 of those banners.

No.

Oh, mhm. So that's an additional six.
Then there are the 25Bs, giving us at least 48.
D1-D7. E1-E5.
Too lazy to go any deeper. Though those letters give us 60. 60 on 5 makes for an average of 12. There is a picture under Z1, so it goes to the end of the alphabet.
So 26*12 leads us to 312 different banners, assuming the average of the first five is reliable.

It'll be messy the whole time, before, during, and after; so I'll call for a cleaning business to help the mess, because one mop and bucket isn't gonna get the flying guts out the carpet. :p

Looking through numerous ones with friends, we've noticed a pattern in the letter of the URL.
i.e. the "m" banners seem to be military.

a- agriculture
b- building interiors
c - cities
d - damage/destruction
e (seems to have board rooms, stock trends, money...) economics?
f - forests
g - government
h- (dry cracked land, then a desert, none above h2) heat, perhaps?
i - industry
j - j1 does not exist, nor do any other it seems :P c'mon, no jaywalking, admins? xD
k - (if k follows the trend, I'm not seeing it k1 - bikes in a city k2- a rifle scope in focus, rest of rifle out of focus k3/k4 statues)
l - landscapes
m - military
n - nanotech, maybe? lots of labs, and molecule, DNA, etc. though n5 is just plants. I might be wrong for this one
o - oceans
p - people
q - they're birds. I don;t know birds well. Maybe they're Quetzals? Not sure, but only one pic here
r - (seems to be pic of poverty, abandoned warehouses, homeless people, the Parthenon, etc goes through r11, and are quite varied, with the common trend being things generally aren't in the best shape) ramshackle? rundown? ruins? all of the above?
s - (all law enforcement) SWAT?
t - (cities with water- drawing a blank on a common t-word)
u - urban
v - a wet, violet flower
w - extraterrestrial stuff, anyone got a nice w-word to describe that? :P
x - (ships, labs, assassins...I'm missing this one...)
y - no y ones
z - (some Renaissance looking stuff, and a fist on a red background...not seeing one for z :P)

a1-a7 is most likely agriculture indeed
b1-b25 were not just interiors - they looked more like tourism related stuff? Although there are some jails in there too. Perhaps it's just "buildings"?
c1-c21 were definitely cities, I agree
d1-d7 were definitely some kind of destruction/disaster/damage
e1-e5 gotta be economy
f1-f5 definitely forest
g1-g3 I'm unsure about. Those were some kinds of palaces. "Government" seems like a decent guess though.
h1 and h2 were deserts. Not sure how h fits the bill here. Heat is a reasonable guess although it might just be h because d already is taken.
i10-i26 seemed like industry to me too
I'm equally lost on k1-k4
l1-l45 was a massive collection of mostly desolate landscapes (a few did did include people). Mostly mountainous, but not exclusively. There were a few cemeteries in there too. Landscapes it probably is.
Yup, m1-m8 are all most definitely military.
o1-o11 is undoubtedly "oceans"
p1-p26 is quite obviously "people"
a lonely q1 says very little. A pic of birds, as stated before.
r1-r11, of those guesses, most likely isn't "ruins" but rather "ruin". My initial guess was "rural" but that very clearly wasn't it very soon into the series.
s1-s4 might be "security" - more universal than "SWAT", though I don't feel those pictures represent "security" particularly well.

I'm a little lost on t1-t27. Initially it's old cities with water. Later on that trend is broken by places without any visible water, castles, sparsely settled land... My guess would be "towns"? I'm really unsure though. Like, most (but not all) of those were much more sparsely settled than the pics shown in c.
It could also be "Travel" - I wouldn't quite call it "Tourism": Too little iconic building type stuff. But most, if not all of those would be awesome to travel to.

u1 and u2 could indeed be urban. Not a terrible amount to go off of. It might also be "underground" as in "underground scene"
v1 is a lone picture of a purple rose. My best bet is "vegetation" but I'd be surprised if that's actually it.
w1-w3 show some clearly artificial, futuristic worlds. No clue what w-word it might be if it isn't just "Worlds"
My best guess for x1-x6 would be special/mysterious (as x often denotes). The first one looked like some artist's rendition on super-light-speed-travel, the next one was some sort of medical test-tube something, x3 looked like some cult, x4 is a typical nuke-blast shroom-cloud, x5 hints at a zombiecalypse and x6 might be a ghost ship or a pirate ship.
z1 is an image collage of historic architecture and z2 looks like a communist party banner of sorts.

I also checked uppercase letters. Those appear to be completely empty.

I personally found out about banners through my rss feed. It got sort of spammed by messaged that I'd have "unlocked banner _name_of_banner_"

I just saw on here and started looking at the URLs :P

Experimenting further...

so, most times when you find one that doesn't exist, it says page not found, right? Like if you put in q24. SO I was trying things like !1, @1, etc. Those all came up with page not found. However, ?1 gives an "access denied" message instead. http://www.nationstates.net/images/banners/?1.jpg ...as do increasing numbers as such
