Variable Population Growth

Postby Albrante » Sat Jan 09, 2010 7:29 pm

I have three questions relating to population growth...

Is there a way to vary the rate at which your population grows?
Do the "Curb Growth" or "Promote Promiscuity" options in the daily issues have any effect on the growth?
Does your pop increase by a fixed or a random or a variable amount?

Any answers?

I think it does, if your nation sucks (you have low civil rights, political freedoms and economy, and your environment sucks) than your growth rate is lower but I think the older it gets, the lower it gets.

Nope, issues don't affect your population growth. I think that population growth varies within a small range of something like (but probably not exactly) 3-7 million per day.

Um.. maybe you should listen to your own advice. :p

Issues, and nation stats have no effect on population growth.

Growth rate is entirely randomized for the most part, I'm trying to find a particular informative post on the subject by Bears Armed ... I believe the system is graduated and determined for the first week of playing and then it becomes randomized between 1-6 billion or something like that.

EDIT: Gawd, maybe I should listen to your advice too.

I've observed this after a while, and it seems that at first, it goes 1-2 million a day, then slowly increases rate. After 500 million, I would guess it would start going 5-6 Million a day, and after that, 7-8 Billion a day.

Billions should be millions. :p
It starts with 1 million a day and end with 5-8 million a day. Sadly I've forgotten the growth in between and the number when it changes.

I'm sure it does 1 million for 5 days and 2 million for 5 days. I forget how long it does 3 or 4 million.

3 million for 5 days, and then straight to (5 to 8 ) million per day...

I guess, your nation only grows when you answer some issue (and at the time period you´ve selected for issues), otherwise not. At least, it seems so, but I´m not sure about this...

It increases at one of the two 'updates' (presumably the one that used to be the 'major update') each day, and the updates are also when you get your issues (on the former 'major update' if you're having one issue that day, one issue at each update if you're having two...) if that is what you mean: However whether or not you actually choose to answer any issues has no effect on it.

So the nation grows, even if I decide to dismiss any issue ? Interesting...as I seem to have seen different; I guess, I´ll try out next time, thank you.

As only the Major Update does the World Census reports, I still call it the Major update.

1 year per 2 billion people is generally a reasonably good guess.

Indeed. I'm (IIRC) coming up to both the 6-year and 12 billion marks sometime this month. EDIT: Yup. 11.953 billion, and nine days short of six years. Assuming normal growth it'll hit both marks about simultaneously.

Of course, some people have larger populations, generally due to being affected by the infamous "population bug" which caused your population to grow at twice its normal rate until it was fixed; and some people have smaller populations, due to having let their nations cease to exist (nations don't grow unless they're active).

True.

Mauvasia wrote:Of course, some people have larger populations, generally due to being affected by the infamous "population bug" which caused your population to grow at twice its normal rate until it was fixed

And apparently in the game's early days it was actually possible to receive several population increments a day, by moving between regions during the update period, because the fact that updates don't happen simultaneously for all of the regions then meant that you could gain people when -- if you moved in the "right" direction -- each of the consecutive regions that you were in was updated...
But that has also been fixed.
