Sorry if this has been answered before, or if I am just a complete noob, but I have a problem with regions coming up instead of search results.

For example, on the World page, if I search for "Anime", I am immediately directed towards the region called "Anime" as opposed to seeing search results for "anime"-tagged regions. It's a bit annoying. Is there any way to avoid this?

The advanced search for tags hasn't been coded yet. That'd be why ;)

I suppose that I (as a semi-successful founder) would like this a lot better if we were also given control over the order in which the tags appear, similar to the control that we have on embassies. I;m a very aesthetically oriented individual and as such would appreciate more control over that.

Another thing that I dislike (as a delegate of a founderless region [different account, otherwise my other statement wouldn't make sense]) is the mandatory "founderless" tag. While I can understand its use as a programming tool or what not I fear that it creates a database by which raiding/invading regions can pick out their next target. I fear that it is more detrimental to security than the tags a re beneficial to recruitment. (All my reservations, of course, could be immediately dropped if a mad happened to magically grant the aforementioned delegate account enough regional influence to password-protect the region....TG me for the name of the nation! :P)

We need a "Inebriated Friendly" tag for Dharma.

Wouldn't that simply encourage spam/bumps on the RMB? Not a good idea, especially since the game will try to remember the RMB forever these days.

Well, maybe. But so what? Having a tag for region size might encourage filling a region with useless puppets (or bots ;) ). Being able to tag your region as being involved in Roleplay might encourage some to set the tag without any basis. If you're looking for a Roleplay region, and you discover that the region that advertised itself as being Roleplay-oriented isn't, you leave. If you're looking for a large region and you discover that the 200 nations in the region represent 2 boring people, you leave. And if you goto a region with an "Active RMB" tag and it's all bumps and "whazzup?", you realize it's not what you're looking for, and move on. Lying about what your region is like, directly or indirectly, isn't going to do you any good.

No tag can be trusted to satisfy, and the possibility of clever (or dumb) misrepresentation is not a reason to reject one, it seems to me.

I did delete the "Often Sober" tag from our testing list before we went live, so I think we'll need to wait on this one. :)

Founderless specifically refers to the founder. Not to the delegate status. Not to whether the founder has power. This was a conscious decision and is remaining for now.

To get a list of regions with a given tag, you have to go through the Tag Cloud, which is linked to from The World page.

Will any changes be eventually made to this page?

Once we figure out the proper modifications, yes. However since you cannot sort by tag, it doesn't fit in exactly.

I'm just wondering, is a "founderless" tag necessarily the best idea? Some regions will seek out founderless regions just to try to take them over, so doesn't it put them at a greater risk? Just wondering.

I really like the idea of creating region tags. Its imperative that nation-states know which region best fits. This speeds up the process and allows regions to compete for members.

I completely agree, that would have been nice to have when I first joined, but I found the perfect region for me anyway lol.

Great work Salusa! Really happy to see this one in. :)

SalusaSecondus wrote:Founderless: As I've said, this will stay as it is for now, but we are still thinking about better ways to handle this.

For what it's worth, I agree with Ballotonia's point that "Founderless" should be different to regions with an absent/dead Founder (which could have its own tag).

Regarding concerns over "Founderless" encouraging invasions, I think this is true, and may lead to more invasions of smaller regions by less-organized raiders (well-organized raiders already know where those regions are). But the tag should not be blocked for this reason.

SalusaSecondus wrote:Tag Sorting: Hmm, I thought I fixed that. I'll go in and take care of that. I like the idea of system tags coming after user-set.

Would it be possible to let Founders & Delegates control the order, the same way as regional embassies? (They already seem to share a few UI aspects.) Some regions may be proud of a particular tag and want to display it first, while other regions wouldn't.

SalusaSecondus wrote:Anti World Assembly: Where does the hyphen go?

After "Anti". :)

Sedgistan wrote:The World - at the top it says: "The world contains 91,769 nations in 8,097 regions (tags)."

I believe the intention is to also add it to the 'change region' page.

The link on the World page is potentially confusing, I think... it's one of those things that looks fine to experienced players, because we know it's the usual nation/region count plus a new "tags" link, but is meaningless to new players. It'd be even more unwieldy if we ever added tags to nations. Too much stuff like that makes the sites unfathomable to people who didn't grow up with it. So I'd suggest:
  • The world page should be the same as before (no "tags" reference)
  • Clicking on "x,xxx regions" takes you to the "The Regions" page, just like now, but the Tag Cloud is added to that page. (It could sit below the table.) Once search is working, we add a radio button to the search box here to let people indicate they want to search for a tag rather than a region name.
Or if you don't like that, a "Tags" link on The Regions page would be better than on World, imho. But I think it would be handy to have the Tag Cloud on the same page as the Regions list.

The Change Region page should get the Cloud, too. It may need a redesign, though, since that would make it quite long (Featured Region + Region List + Tag Cloud + Search box). Maybe a line at the top to allow quick jumping to each of those items.

Also a couple of thoughts:
  • When looking up a particular tag (like this, you should be able to sort the results in the same way as the "The Regions" page (i.e. it has the "Sort by: Today's World Census | Population | Name" bar at the top). I'm thinking this should be feasible, based on the code we already have.
  • And just to be incredibly persnickety, can "Region" in the URL /page=tag_search/type=Region be lowercased? I've standardized the rest of the game on lowercase URLs. :)

There's such a large backlog of those regions that unless I can get an exhaustive list that I can feed into a program to assign the tags, I'm just not going to try.

Will it ever be possible to track tag searches and put them in the data dumps to see if there are any trends? Sounds like it would be interesting to track tag searches for a variety of reasons.

A generalite tag might be in order. There's quite a few regions that just focus on the NSG community, Persian Tricycle Riders, The Franco Spanish Empire, Secret Bikini Beach and Generalite Mafia. There might be communities focused just on Forum Seven, now. I wouldn't be surprised. It would help newcomers to NSG or F7 find those regions.

I was also thinking about a Service tag for regions like that florist region, Papa Pallocci's Pizza Pagoda, Nationstates advertising board and NationStates Family Court... which provide some sort of gameplay amenity. *shrugs*

I dare an administrator to make "Recruitment Friendly" mandatory in all regions with Feeder, and Sinker tags.
