Right. It's words. Billions of words.

Again, pictures are not the issue. The NS server doesn't serve up the pictures to begin with. They're served up by whatever server they're stored on, so if I type, for instance:then my browser will contact the http://www.foo.com server to download img.jpg. All the NS server does is send an <img src="http://www.foo.com/img.jpg"> to my browser; it doesn't deal with the actual serving of the picture, since the picture is never stored on the NS servers.

Obviously not, for Violet just afforded us with the answer above.

I'm "elitist" because I point out that the facts contradict your position? I "dismissed" nothing; I considered it and then, after seeing that there were no facts available to support it, pointed out that it was incorrect.

Extremely often, I assume.[violet] wrote:
Well, it needed to figure out which were common words, so those got processed even though they weren't indexed. The index itself, excluding common words, is 610,000 words, and 31 million word-to-post relationships, for 1.6GB. Which is not enormous, but it gets processed every time a post is made (or modified, or deleted), which is often.
Yay. I'll sit back and quietly hope that it reduces the "strain".[violet] wrote:The good news is that turning this off dropped our disk load from crippling to almost nothing, so we seem to have nailed the problem. I will trial a new search engine tomorrow.

At the moment, F7 has 57,200 posts going back 45 days, or an average of 1271 posts a day, 52 posts an hour, 0.8 posts a minute
General has 584,057 posts going back 250 days, or an average of 2336 posts a day, 97.5 posts an hour, 1.6 posts a minute--twice the rate of F7.
II has, since the beginning of the new forums, averaged about 0.66 posts a minute.
This doesn't take into account views, but it seems reasonable to assume that views are roughly proportional to posts. So F7 seems to only be creating slightly more load on the server than II, and half that of General.
Now, yes, this is a fairly simple metric. But it's the only one I have access to--which means it's the only one you have access to too; so there is no basis for your claim.
Your missing the content though
F7 is heavy on quote pyramids, pictures (which are then quoted, people don't *snip* in there often remember), so it stands to reason that a single thread like "your favourite anime character" containing possibly dozens of dozens of pictures would put an unproportional strain to it's relative size. Which is already quite... impressive.
