Curiosity: How many people play NS _now_?

Postby Marcuslandia » Fri Jun 12, 2009 8:47 pm

"2 million served!"
49,904 nations

Now, many of those still count as they have not, as yet CTEed. BUT, since any player can have any number of puppets. The actual number of players = the number of distinct email addresses that players have provided.

So, now I'm wondering, just how many actual _players_ are in this game? The answer would offer a certain amount of....perspective.

It's impossible to accurately know unless everyone had entered an email address that was exactly the same for each puppet. Even then it would be difficult to figure out.

I'm going to take an educated guess and say about 1/4 of the Nations are real players.

Most free Website Analysis sites typically project something like that with the recorded IP addresses...

Some people don't provide email addresses.

And raiders and defenders, for various in-game reasons, may provide several. I think I've used 5-6.

Actually, I believe that is pointedly incorrect. A player must offer his email address to create his initial nation. Any puppets he creates would have to provide the same email address. If the player provides a different email address, that nation would be viewed as being for an entirely different player, unless he admits freely up front. So a single person could have 4 nations under one address, and 3 more under another address.

Now, a single player is supposed to be limited to a single WA membership. But with multiple email addresses it requires some detective work to "see" that the different blocks of nations are in actuality run by the same person. Depending on how well he's covered his tracks. a player _could_ have ONE WA membership for each block of nations. (Having more than one WA tied to the same email address is a quick way to get expelled.) However, the consequence of being caught having more than one WA membership is to have _all_ of those nations CTE and the player be blacklisted from the game. Certain risk takers will/do inevitably try to get away with having more than one WA. And occasionally you hear of one such getting caught and tossed out of the game. But it wouldn't surprise me to learn that there are at least a few players getting away with it.

One, a nation does NOT have to have an email when created, at all. Only if it wants to get on forum or join the WA.

Two, I can't count the number of times I've seen regions catch member nations posting from the same IP on offsite forums as other WA nations in the region, seen it way too much, people get away with it A LOT.

Three, I've registered under many emails just because I use them all, and actually I can't remember off the top of my head this one is registered under...

I have no nations in the WA, but I have a couple of puppets, and use seperate email addys for each - but then again I have several email addys, and do work from different IP addresses.

Odd. I seem to recall having had to provide an email address to register. My activation was emailed to that address.

Hmm. Apparently I didn't save that email, but I do have the one that informs me that I've been accepted into the WA. (That dates back to late August 2008.) My email archive cuts off just before that. (It took me a couple weeks before I joined the WA.)

Ah! This from the FAQ:
Do I need to provide my e-mail address?

No, although it's recommended. If you don't supply your e-mail address and you forget your password, there's no way to get it back. This means your nation would be consigned to limbo for all eternity. Think of your poor people.

You DO have to have an email to join the WA, and to get on the forums (or at least you did to get on old jolt, Idk if that still applies). But you don't have to have an email if you are a non-WA who never gets on the forum.

There are probably a lot of uncaught WA multies as TFL describes, but there are a lot of people with no WAs too. It should at least even out, so I just go by the WA numbers, give a few thousand.

I wish I remember who wrote:Games like Nationstates are like a big cardboard box, and there are two kinds of people in the world.
