Random "History" Setting

Postby Paffnia » Sun Jul 13, 2014 6:28 pm

When you go create a nation, one of the choices is "History"--"Plucky, Malnourished Pioneers," "Like-Minded Isolationists," etc. Would it be possible to add a "random" option to randomly pick one of the history options? There's already a random option for government type, right below on the Settings page. This suggestion has been raised before, and it would allow for an even-more random start for nation creation.

Why can't you just roll dice?
The Confrederated Clans (and other Confrederated Bodys) of the Free Bears of Bears Armed
(includes The Ursine NorthLands) Demonym = Bear[s]; adjective = ‘Urrsish’.
Population = just under 20 million. Economy = only Thriving. Average Life expectancy = c.60 years. If the nation is classified as 'Anarchy' there still is a [strictly limited] national government... and those aren't "biker gangs", they're traditional cross-Clan 'Warrior Societies', generally respected rather than feared.

I mean, sure, but the admins decided to make it easier by just having a "random" option for government type, so it seems only natural to add similarly the same option for histories. As it stands now, it's somewhat incongruous to have a "random" option for one but not the other.

I don't want to sound mean or anything, but try closing your eyes and picking, it is much easier than adding a feature.

Again, sure, but the option is there for government type, so it can be done, and it seems like a small thing that would make nation creation easier and more personalizable, if "random" is what you're going for.

Again, you can just roll a die or close your eyes and pick. That's much, much easier than having to add more code to the game.

Is that actually a random option, or does it more specifically give you a government whose general policies are "random"?

Hmm. I'd always thought based on this thread that it was a random selection from the other government types, but I (and that thread) could very well be wrong.

I don’t see a point. You can literally just not choose it. None of the eight questions are random either.

It's not a huge deal, but the first question on government type/ideology has a random option, so this seems parallel and useful to someone trying to randomize their nation as much as possible. Also, I'm not sure that skipping the question would the same effect as a random option.

The random setting in the government type options doesn't actually default to one of the government types if I remember correctly, instead only providing a random balance of the three base freedoms that are determined by the selected government type - in the case of a randomization option for the Nation History options, I think that may get a bit confusing if intended to mirror the random setting in the government type by giving a nation a random slew of stat bonuses/nerfs, and if you mean allowing the random setting to just choose one of the nation histories it feels rather pointless as it does not mirror the government setting nor does it really do much of anything else.
Stay safe, be kind, and have a great day! :)

:p

More seriously, I don't generally have all my non computer gear next to me just for this kind of thing. And going for a third party site for something simple like this is also not a good user experience.

Unlike the government type question, which cannot be left unfilled (Centrist comes selected by default and all you can do is change the option selected), the history question is optional and can be left blank. So someone who doesn't care and chooses "random" on government type would probably just leave history (and the other political questions) blank.
