Suggestion: Randomise the order of options.

Postby Namidia » Thu Jul 10, 2014 2:27 pm

It seems that more often than not, the option most in line with typical "western" politics is presented first in issues. Perhaps this should be changed to random in the case of issues where the order isn't particularly important? (I realise that in some issues, there's a case of say, Option B being presented as a reply to Option A.)

Not a huge deal, but I thought it might be a nice change to implement if you ever get one of those days where you feel like working on the site but can't think of anything to actually do. xD

Sorry Fris, reordering is actually trivial to do.

There are people out there who rely on the order (automated issue answering) and whether or not it'll work well depends on their implementation. People are also used to discuss issues using 'My opinion on the second option is...', which becomes more difficult when options are randomly arranged. And then there are the many issues where the options are textually written to 'flow' in a certain order. Weighed against the limited value of random ordering, I choose not to do so.

If it is automated, one would hope they were using the "option=x" in the html code rather than the order each item appears in the list. Because you need to know the option number to answer an issue anyway. Plus, "issue answering" is not an official part of the API, so retaining compatibility should not even be a consideration.

I would point out though, some issues are written so that each next option references the option before it to tell a sort of short story. Randomizing those would render the issue options nonsensical...
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

It would also wreck the spreadsheet I use to keep track of my past issues. :p
