Means that there's something new there.

I had it too and i wasn't even a part of the WA at the time. and like the OP said it's red not green as what it was before then. so i forgive me if i don't feel satisfied with the previous response
I checked things out and it's something on NS++ side of things. Something having to do with a situation in one of the resolutions. If you want it gone NS++ users just go the GA resolution the recent resolution and click the close button on the pop-up or just wait it out since the resolution isn't going to last by lunch tomorrow.

I am not a member of the WA but the sidebar is displaying a red '1' next to world assembly. What does this mean?

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Forgive me for saying this, but doesn't it seem the slightest bit unethical to use NS++ as a means for campaigning for people to vote in any direction on a resolution?

I am not pretending to be the "site" or official. The notice is clearly from NS++. So no. I never made a promise that I would not use NS++ to further my views.

I... I never really said that, did I? I said you were using NS++ to do so- you're clearly the manager of NS++, the developer of it. I'm just saying, shouldn't NS++ be a neutral platform for users to improve their NS browsing experience? Not a means for the developer to further his views?

My question is do you include a way to turn these notices off for users who like NS++'s features but don't necessarily want your views pushed on them?

Excellent question, and no, I checked the settings, and no such option appears to exist.

You can dismiss the alert in the 5 seconds it takes to view and click "Ignore Report". Or wait, and it will vanish as soon as the resolution passes/fails.

Thafoo wrote:I'm just saying, shouldn't NS++ be a neutral platform for users to improve their NS browsing experience? Not a means for the developer to further his views?

Why? What would I gain from the first?

I see no logical reason I should avoid using a distribution channel to the fullest advantage I can, within the site rules.

As a back-end developer I think you are stepping a very ethical thin line, here.

Our job as back-end developers isn't to further our views, it's to provide a more or less neutral experience to the end-user.

He offers the option to close the notification or read it at will - so he did provide that much on the notifications. The number remains as part of the layout though as a red 1.

That's not what people want from the extension. If people wanted your opinion on things, they'd ask.

The time it takes to dismiss it isn't worth the fact that you're shoving it in our faces unnecessarily with a bright red colour used to ensure that we see it.

"What would I gain[?]" Right, because you shouldn't hardly care about the users generally having problems with you using your platform to further your views. You could've made a TG campaign, you know. The extension should be used to further our NS experience, not so you can campaign for/against a WA resolution.

So, in other words, "No, there is no way to disable such notices from appearing."

No, the users approved of your technical modifications, not of your opinion on things.

If that was the case we would ask you your blog address.

This was the first of it's kind. I don't plan any future cases for this, but I won't promise that either.

...No, by installing the extension, we were (supposedly...) signing up for something to improve our browsing experience. Wanting to improve our NS experience ≠ asking for your opinion, directly or implicitly.

I saw it, I had no issues with that, as others do the same.

The whole "notifications campaign" though? That was hardly necessary.

Google showed a banner back for the day they protested SOPA. IMO, this is akin to that, on a much smaller scale. Such events are not unprecedented.

I highly doubt another one will occur in the next year, but I'm well within my rights to notify users of incidents in the game I think are important.
