I don't recommend it. A separate recruitment process would be unaware of NS++ recruitment and almost certainly exceed the rate limit.

NationStates++ | Browser Extension for NationStates

Postby Parhe » Sun May 04, 2014 10:10 pm

I tried erasing all my puppets but it doesn't seem to work. It just lags the specific tab. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling NS++ but that did nothing.
Hey, it is Parhe :D I am always open to telegrams.
I know it is a Work-In-Progress, but I would love it if y'all looked at my new factbook and gave me some feedback!

You're going to have to be more specific. Did you use the "Clear Puppets" option from the NS++ settings?

Yes, that thing. Instead it keeps freezing the tab after I click "Are you sure?" I tried just letting to sit for half an hour but it didn't change.

...aren't you the guy with like 1000 puppets? probably going to need to clear is manually then (deleting the files yourself, afforess can point to them)

edit:just checked, latest version NS++ and worked just fine

Worst case scenario, you can wipe your localStorage. If you open your browsers javascript console (control-shift-j on most browsers) while viewing a nationstates.net page (say, your nation's page) you can run this command:

Code: Select all
localStorage.clear();

LocalStorage is where settings/data/puppets are stored. Fortunately your settings are backed up, so everything except the puppets list should resync if you refresh after that command. You can use google for more details on LocalStorage is you are curious and so inclined.

Isn't there a direct way via file explorer? seems to me hes having trouble clearing because its a big list that browsers can't handle

How Do I Know This Is Safe?
You don't. While NationStates++ is an open-source browser extension, and so any developer with Javascript experience can inspect the code, that is not a guarantee of safety. Browser extensions do have an additional layer of safety, as the browser prevents addons or extensions from installing malware or harmful viruses. This layer security does not protect you from extensions that steal personal information or login information. Every program you install carries risk and relies on a certain level of trust. If you have specific concerns about safety or user security, you can telegram me or email me at Afforess [at] gmail.com for additional information.

So any Tom, Dick, or Larry with Javascript experience can inspect the code, what's to stop them from changing it just enough to allow malware to slip in? I don't know that I would use this until the problem I just addressed were taken into consideration and some sort of randomizer (?) added that would change the code at random and hence prevent extensions that can steal personal or login information
ALSO RP AS: Federate Cherokee State, New Aztlan

...what? are you aware how github works? the only people that can change the source code are Aforress and authorised pull requests to change the code,as for login info you need to use your common sense

No, LocalStorage is managed by the browser, and I would strongly discourage anyone trying to figure out which files to delete on their system to alter it.

I don't think you understand how javascript runs in your browser. Anyone can't simply change what javascript runs on your browser - only the developer, me, can issue updates and changes to the extension. Chrome, Firefox, and Safari all have code-signing mechanisms that prevent others from issuing updates. Any changes you make would only work on your own machine, unless you achieved a way to distribute it. What you describe is simply not possible, short of exploiting a vulnerability in the browser or website.

Also, the codebase on Github is not what runs on a user's machine. Github is a mirror of what runs, I have to manually package the code from github and distribute it. Simply changing a file on Github would not cause users to run the new code.

If I am not understanding your question, try to be more specific.

Randomizer:
The way recruitment works is that it targets the newest arrival (newest founded nation), then the next newest, then the 3rd next newest, etc. However, everyone is doing the same exact thing, so those nations are big targets. Maybe you don't want to be doing the same thing as everyone else. Instead of just going after new nations, you can randomly recruit from any nation founded in the last 24 hours.

Is this feature still there? I don't see it in my region's recruitment section.

I removed it because it was significantly less effective than how nations are ordered now.

Yeah Parhe I have approximately 220 puppets I wouldn't recommend uploading more than 75 at a time because it can freeze the browser.

Just save separate files somewhere you know they're safe like a USB drive.

Not sure if this is a bug, but I had previously disbanded my regional newspaper.

I wanted to put it back up again, but when I attempted to do so, I received this:

You do not have authority.

I'm a founder, so this doesn't make much sense, seeing as how I have regional controls.

Any ideas?

I'll check into this later, but try again now. I noticed that yesterday there was a 30 minute spike in NS++ usage that temporarily caused some requests not to go through. I don't think most of the extension code distinguishes between permission denied and a 404.

This was the first overload of NS++ I've seen since the April fools game. I may need to optimize or expand servers.

Thanks.

I figured something had happened like that.

At the very least, it shows people are using the extension more :lol2:
