The OP of this thread - eight years old though it may be - still says that [violet] calls the shots on the project and that she (and Eluturtle) will "eventually" move NS++ to their own local servers.

If NS++ is still the responsibility of site admins (and I have absolutely no idea if it still is), how and why have they not pulled the plug on the project yet?

There are multiple features that I’m not sure would be legal under the scripting rules. This was a pretty great extension that fell into disrepair once it was taken over by the devs. Can somebody else take this over?

Features that remain great and unique are definitely plentiful and I would love to see quite a few made vanilla - things like the tg inbox search, or forum QoL things (post ID, highlighting posts by thread OP, etc).

Sure, the puppet switcher was neat too. Write off the api-tg tool for all I care. etc. But I'd LOVE to see [v]'s original promise to roll many of the QoL features into the vanilla site upheld.

Confirming I have the same issue. I'm using the latest version of Opera GX, and its kind of bugging me that I can't get to my settings, because the "highlight OP posts" feature's default color is incredibly bad to look at.

Per Roavin, I am here.

1) NS++ is probably illegal in several ways, and at least needs a legality review, despite being a site owned tool. Namely, aspects like the way it fills forms (including on the puppet creator), as well as possibly some of the way it interacts with the telegrams page, could very well be illegal.

2) NS++ is effectively abandonware. The OP doesn't even have working pictures. The entire settings page is broken. Most things outside the puppet switcher and basic QoL features do not work.

3) [violet] originally expressed a desire to port many of these QoL features, and to continue to use the extension as a test bed for new ones.

4) Given all this, can staff (which owns NS++) please
a) express the continued legality of using this extensions
b) remove or amend any parts that are illegal
c) if they have no intent to do so, stop providing access to an illegal tool
d) preferably roll the most useful features into vanilla, such as telegram inbox search, telegram reply-to-all buttons, maybe-maybe-not displaying influence number on nation pages in addition to influence rank title, and other features? I suspect some of the forum ones (like better post ID's) may or may not be in the ongoing forum rework effort, and I figure things like the puppet switcher/"account manager" are distant-to-never vanilla features, but a number of those things that are still functional otherwise would be good vanilla features (and most of the fancier NS++ features, like newspapers and such, have been dead for years).

NS++ remains in a weird place where it still provides some basically-essential NS features (admin has been promising TG inbox search for half a decade or more, and it's ridiculous we do not have one while the site sells infinite inbox capacity), but is otherwise mostly broken and probably illegal, while being owned by the site. It's the least you can do to rule on the legality and either trim it down to the functional parts or shoot it in the head.

Thank you.

If I can be of further assistance in any way, please let me know.

To clarify my post, I meant more that if I were to fork NS++ and bring it up to date and in working condition, there are features that would be illegal for me to do that. Extensions maintained by NS officially can do whatever they want.

Does anyone else see notices about failed login attempts on your main as a side effect of this?

Or are those probably from an actual player?

I am looking into repairing NS++, to the extent practicable, now.

If a volunteer could put together a list of UI bugs (like NS features it breaks, etc) that would be helpful. Fair warning, the extension's functionality might suddenly change after we bring back the backend. But I imagine bugs like "breaks regional password entry" won't magically get fixed.

Funnily, I was having countless bugs with ns++ such as not being able to remove puppets, but now, for whatever reason, I got stormed with features once I visited the official ns++ site. I think that the extension wasn't working because the security certificate of the main site expired... I mean, I am not tech savvy, but that may be it, because when I proceeded into the site despite it not being secure, boom. That should be fixed because many people downloaded the extension outside of the actual site (for example I searched it straight on chrome extensions)

Possible issues: using puppet creator, the puppet does not actually get the flag it is supposed to get. It also says the max size is 250kB which is wrong.

On a side note, is there any way to remove the 'not secure' part near the NS site URL? It's a disgrace to my eyes

Edit: very small issue, like barely gamechanging, but it marks all of my puppets as exnations in the management screen despite them being active

Replicated, proceeding to the actual website (past the unsecure warning) actually got the setting page working again, somehow.

I've been complaining about what works and what doesn't elsewhere this winter, so maybe this'll inspire me to collect some of that into a list...

Going back to the site helped too - features I didn't even know existed for NS++ are working again. Say hi to Skyvalid 92, a nation created using the (sort of still broken) NS++ puppet creator!

Also, I am finally able to remove puppets from the goldang puppet list, but I can't get the settings page working again.

oh, ew, you're right is also fixed yucky parts of the UI that I was kinda glad were dead, like the embassy flag scroller on region pages, or "newspapers" that were kinda made duplicate by dispatches, LOL

At least I can manage puppets now.

Now I am getting "not secure" on all NS pages in Chrome, though.

...actually I am now getting that with NS++ off too, maybe coincidental.

...no, it's definitely NS++, turning it off and hard refreshing doesn't make it go away, but restarting the browser window with it disabled does. And then it shows back up when I turn NS++ on again. So yeah, more of NS++ works now, but it makes Chrome think NS is unsecure =P

I'd say "give Elu a break" please. Let's help as much as we can. We did have to drag Elu to fix the servers over Christmas holidays, which I imagine cannot be pleasant. Elu also has so many other responsibilities.

A non-exhaustive and possibly personally biased list of what works, what doesn't, and what shouldn't. I may have missed some things (which should become easier to spot as more broken stuff is cut). I would be glad to provide additional info or pictures of any of these on request.

Things that do work and should be kept or made vanilla:
-Telegram inbox searches!
-Replies by the Original Poster in forum threads appears in a slightly different color
-Officers can access both Region Admin and Regional Controls, with bothlinked on the region page, which is helpful because Regional Admin displays the full banlist, which lets you:
A) ctrl-F and look for a specific nation (easier than the alphabetical drop down only in Controls-as-an-officer, especially if you only remember a partial or want to search on a second word
B) lets you ctrl-F for commas and subtract a few to see how close you are to NS' dumb 200-ban ceiling that all moderate sized regions hit, even before talking about how 2 or 3 lib jumps blows it in Gameplay.
C) clearly view which banned nations are CTE
i..discussed this with Chingis, but these could also easily be features added to Officer Border Control one way or the other [i.e. search + ban count + some method of CTe display) and then you could just combine both pages into 1.
-"Forward telegram" button
-Display Inf *value* in parenthesis next to influence title on nation page
-Display post number/IDs as a button (can be clicked to get postlink easier than the tiny page) on the forums.
-Sidebar font is bolder and easier to read on large/HD screens
-Infinite scroll RMBs
-Turns "tired of life in [region] into an actual button!
-Additional emblems for region pages i.e. cloud for the tag cloud, chart for the population, it all looks better
-Puppet manager and logins - good to keep in the extension only until such a time as NS makes it normal. Was "broken" but works after visiting the NS++ website and allowing access despite expired certs
-RMB messages just post, without taking you to an intermediary "view your post" page
-RMB posts linkify URLS (may be considered a security issue in vanilla, but no more so than the forums? makes life easier!!)
-"Ignore" threads within forum "view your posts" (hides them from view, i.e. you want some megathread you posted in once six months ago to stop showing up).

Things that may or may not work but maybe should be killed:
-puppet creator...possibly illegal as-is? Theoretically does work after vising the NS++ website, per above.
-In-line API recruitment on region page: badly functional, not well implemented
-Embassy flag scroll on region pages
-"banhammer" interface...somewhat overlaps with new border control, possibly illegal in implementation
-Newspapers...largely made redundant by Dispatches, not visible to non-users anywho
-Global roleplay news
-NS Wiki links
-Duplicate like/added dislike buttons on RMB posts
-Regional Power is displayed differently and breaks the page (on region pages)
-"Regional IRC" on region pages
-"regional population" on region pages (same chart as on History)
-Alternate founder/delegate names
-NSWiki link on nation pages
-Added badge that tells you whether another nation is also an NS++ user (privacy issue)
-Random font'size changes on pages like Regions

Things that don't work and maybe could/should be fixed (or made vanilla):
-Certs are expired on https://nationstatesplusplus.net/ making it insecure and making all of NS appear insecure when NS++ is in use.
-Regional population record displated in the "population" line on regions?
-Very broken "world assembly" page linked from nations: used to have some cool info about your endorsements and influence relative to your region
-"Previous Reports" on GHR page, showed text and ID number of your last few GHRs.
-Notices/Telegrams counters updated without a page refresh, once upon a time. I tested this and I don't *think* It's working right now (but could be wrong)
-You cannot enter regional passwords since NS changed how that works!

Things that I *think* were removed but the Chrome store still lists so maybe they're just broken/duplicated?
-Scrolling through censuses with a scroll bar
-NS++ had its own RMB search before NS vanilla had one
-RMB quote buttons (also before NS added them)
-individual "ignore"/hide button for RMB posts (like a surpress button visible to you only)
