Taken from the FAQ:
...or libertarian (liberal, or laissez-faire).

When creating my nation I chose Libertarian and was labeled liberal. I checked the FAQ and found that it is considered liberal which couldn't be further from the truth.

What is up with that?

The term "liberal" is not used outside the United States and Canada to mean leftists, but rather is used to describe Classical Liberalism. In Australia (which is where Max Barry is from), the Liberal Party is considered right-wing. The German Free Democratic Party also espouses classical liberalism.

And "libertarian" really isn't a left/right distinction either. There are right libertarians and left lebertarians...
