Sort of off topic, but certainly related...

Is there a way to upload graphics onto the forum directly, or must they be hosted at a third party domain and linked to?

Well hehe, you could always upload it as a flag. ;)

Other than that I don't know of any way to upload a photo to the NS server, it seems pointless however considering how functional and convenient many third party sites are.

I'd try Photobucket, I haven't had a single problem with them.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up for me. Unfortunately the program that I use to transfer files to my server and the server itself seem not to be on speaking terms right now. :( I will upload my idea if I can get the wretched things to work before the contest closes.

Uh, you can just go to imageshack.us and upload an image without waiting for your server to function.

MSPaint is a wonderful tool. I make all my flags in it.

These were way easier than what I usually do, though.

why not just something like this, modified amybe?

Image

it's simple, to the point, suggests they could return, etc etc etc

Uh... perhaps a less emotionally charged flag?

I'd really prefer not to see an animated flag for nations that no longer exist. It's quite a distraction.

Also, as previously discussed in the thread, using the Australian aboriginal flag with a message that the nation has ceased to exist has some unsavoury connotations.
The world is not cyclical, not eternal or immutable, but endlessly transforms itself, and never goes back, and we can assist in that transformation.

Live on, survive, for the earth gives forth wonders. It may swallow your heart, but the wonders keep on coming. You stand before them bareheaded, shriven. What is expected of you is attention.

Why is that the default flag, anyway? I've been here for years and never thought to ask.

Actually no, it doesn’t. The graphic was designed to communicate a point within these forums and the NationStates game, based on the appearance default flag which the game uses. If you see connotations in my message with the graphic, then they are only in your own reflection. If you don’t like the Australian Aboriginal flag in this context, take it up with Max.

It was. I suggest you read the thread. The issue was brought up by Ardchoille, in fact.

That's silly. The Australian Aboriginal flag is our default at least partly because it's a good cause. (Also it's a great flag. Also it's funny when you take down a Nazi flag and replace it with this one.) The image is used to express support for the rights of indigenous Australians all over the place. It flies over Parliament House. Protesters wave it in marches. It's a real stretch to turn promoting it into "appropriation."

Nah, you got me wrong. It's not the use of it as default I object to; I know it flies everywhere, for good reason, and I like it as default for the same reason.

What I was on about was having it faded out, with "Ex-nation" on it. That's un-funny because there was a time when, thanks to official policy, Aborigines almost were "ex".

And then...

[violet] wrote:Ahhh, I see what you mean. Ex-nation, as in extinguished culture. That's a fair point.

I think the problem is that everyone, after consideration, knows that the NStinguished flag is the superior choice but, because they could not see that first time, their pride will not allow them to change their mind openly.

Swallow your pride people, NStinguished is the best line - it alludes to both extinguished for those DEATed and distinguished for those who merely let time slip through their fingers, the image isn't really clear enough to be anything more than an image,

I might alter the font size down a little as I originally meant.
