It takes up three on my comp. It was much worse on Internet Explorer when I used it where the ad sidebar was literally pushed into adspace.

Aha. I might revisit this issue. The problem is that the forum needs to create a space for the panel (which is an iframe, for any geeks following along at home), but can't tell in advance how tall it will be. There might be some clever ways around this nowadays.

Please report any bad ads here. We are only signed up for the most benign level of ads from Google, and we do even block some of those, but we don't generally consider "scantily dressed" to be pornographic.

Well the scantily dressed women tend to be animated women, so I don't know if that counts. Most of them are ads for computer games.

Hey, is there a reason why I keep getting ads promoting Oriental dating sites?

http://www.nationstates.net/page=store

Long version: Currently, NationStates is 100% ad-supported. This is not ideal because some people don't like ads and would prefer to support the site directly. Also, it's kind of nerve-wracking for us to be 100% dependent on one revenue source, since if that disappears, we can't pay the bills.

So now you can now pay $2.99 to enjoy the site without ads! This works on a per-nation basis and lasts forever.

You can also buy it for another nation as a gift.

I'm pre-announcing it here ahead of a public unveiling on the News page so we can be sure it's all working. I don't think there are any bugs left, but if so, please report them! I will fix up any mistakes. (You should probably not go crazy with purchases, if you're considering doing that, for the first few days of testing.)

There are a few more details on the store page under "Terms & Conditions".

A lot of people have suggested we do this (or a donations page) for a long time, so hopefully it works out! Please let me know of any questions or issues, thanks!

It should have been autochecked upon purchase; the way it's coded makes it hard for it not to be. I know we've had issues in the past occasionally with checkboxes and certain browsers, so I'm thinking it's more likely to be a case of it being unchecked by some action. Can you have a play around with your Settings page for me and see if you can make the "No advertisements" checkbox clear itself? It might be something like your browser auto-filling in form fields.

Ahah, it's not just me. Mine -was- autochecked, but unchecked itself yesterday. I didn't think of it at the time, but I'd just uploaded a new flag. I'll double check later (and post system details), but could that be it?

Yep that was it. I uploaded a new flag and it unchecked the no adds.
I also changed themes prior to that and it did not.

Your status as a supporter is stored as a flag on your nation file, much like, say, your currency. Presumably a restored nation would still count as a supporter.

I don't know anything about these issues, but does NS get more money if I uncheck the block ads button? Or is it the same amount of money no matter how many times the ad is loaded? The ads have never bothered me at all, I'll turn them back on even if it helps just a little. :p

Yep, it's permanent on that nation, no matter what. If you come back 5 years from now, the nation still has Supporter status.

It does help a little, but we're probably talking about tiny fractions of a cent per ad, and I'd prefer that you have a good experience with the site. So if you find the ads useful or interesting, leave them on, but if they bother you, don't feel like you're robbing us to turn them off.

The same goes for people using ad blockers: it's obviously not helping us pay the bills, but we're happy for you to do that. Just enjoy the site and be a part of its community. If at some point in the future you decide it's worth $2.99 to be a supporter, then that's great too. :)

If we use an adblocker, buy a supporter account, and uncheck the box in the settings, do we still give you ad revenue when we load pages?

No, only displayed ads count.

There used to be an option to download ads but not display them, so websites would still get paid. It seems that option's gone, though.

I don't think it's possible to allow images in signatures on a per-user basis without severely modifying the phpbb code, which [violet] is probably not inclined to do because that would severely complicate updating the software.

Don't really care about the ads - they've never actually bothered me to be honest.

And I'd support if you could pay the way you usually pay when buying stuff online, but I'm not going to sign up for PayPal or whatever to do it - sorry.

You don't have to, you can just enter credit card information without signing up, as well.
