Suggestion: Allow links in RMB posts

Postby Kandarin » Sat Oct 10, 2009 11:31 am

As it stands, in most major regions there are two areas of discussion: the Regional Message Board and an offsite regional forum. Any given region with both has people who post on the former and people who post on the latter. There's often a substantial non-overlap - for whatever reason, some members don't want to regularly navigate a forum to get information. Sometimes, though, it's desirable to draw regional attention to some particular discussion or post on the forum, even for people who aren't usually on the forum. However, the game disallows RMB posts over a limiting length that is well below the post URL length of common offsite forum services.

Therefore, I ask that it be possible to post links in RMB posts in the same manner as they can be posted in WFEs. I know that there is the potential for abuse, but then there is the same potential in allowing links in WFEs, or indeed in allowing people to post.

(Yes, I know how tinyurl works. I don't think an additional third-party application should be necessary for regional communication).

Ok, we might trial it. A little leery of opening the doors to spambots pushing Viagra, is all.

They aren't that bad, if people are stupid enough to click on those links than They should be banned.

Umm, I didn't know that stupidity was against the NS rules(to be clear, I refer here to people clicking spammy viagra links)...

But I guess it's a bit of trial and error. If we suddenly find ourselves with a massive load of spambots crawling all over NS and spamming all region, then I guess the reason of not allowing links in RMB messages is very justified :)

Another idea is to somehow implement a 5 minute block to posting messages on an RMB after you moved to that region. It would only be an annoyance to very mobile players, but it would be enough for a mod to catch up with a spambot and deleting it before it has posted on 20 different RMBs (instead of one spambot crawling very fast, I guess with server delays etc. it could spam several RMBs per minute, instead of then 1 per 5 minutes :))

I heartily support the above suggestion for multiple reasons.

Also, would it be possible to have a redirect page for links in RMBs? Something like "continue following this link at your own risk"?

Yes please. This wouldn't be a serious problem for the nations using this legitimately; recruiters (correct me if I'm wrong, someone from a UCR) spend most of their time sending telegrams anyhow. It would make things far more difficult for true spammers and the folks who duck in and out of regions to post something hostile and evade a ban.

tinyurl? This is quite worrying because it could be a potential for bait-and-switch links, and tricking users into bad sites. I also take note about the fact that the content of websites are uncertain. So, my suggestion would be for founders to delete RMB messages although there may be a risk of censorship there, but it would be worth it.

Censorship would be a good cause to leave for, or even better... write a condemnation proposal. :p
