Gimme Power to Hide

Postby Sanctaria » Tue Jun 12, 2012 2:25 pm

Moderators and Admins can hide being online. Lucky them.

I can't. This bugs me. Why does this bug me? Because when I'm online and a Mod isn't (or is hiding), and people see my lovely vomit-coloured name big and bold and standing out, guess who gets TGs asking for/demanding stuff! It's annoying.

I'm guessing this is the reason that Mods/Admins have the ability to hide. I don't suppose it could be extending to Issue Editors? I would suggest Mentors, but that kind of defeats their purpose ...

So yeah, can you give Issue Editors the ability to hide being online? Pwease?

I support this. It would be a nice option to have.

I'm not overburdened with telegrams, but I do receive a fair amount of non-issue related telegrams, sometimes assuming I have way more power than I do. So clearly, the way to combat that is to give IEs more power. :p If people are going to assume we're mods, we might as well dress the part, right? That is cloaked in invisibility with an air of mystery and fear surrounding our names.

After a quick discussion with the other mods currently active, there's no real valid reason not to give you guys the cloaking ability, and a couple of good reasons to give it to you. Unlike the Mentors who benefit from standing out in the list, Issue Editors don't really need the extra visibility, and given TG box capacities, if y ou guys are getting moderation questions, then that is at least a nuisance if not an outright problem.

So, pending more extended moderator discussion in the sekrit lair about it, I've flipped the switch so you should be able to select to hide your online status via User Control Panel > Board Preferences.

Why exactly can't anyone be invisible online? I can see no real harm given this option, with (albeit minimal) benefits.

It's not a supported feature. Mods got to it and enabled it for themselves before I could stop them, and now it's gone to Issue Editors! It is certainly going no further.
