There isn't a real tip into getting badges. Most likely you just have to surpass all other nations in whatever category is being rated on that day, and make sure the region is big enough for you to receive them. There's a wide variety of them, and answering issues may help in reaching a specific badge, but it's not like all there is are the badges, there's more to it than that.

They get their badges from scoring high on a world census ranking. Answer issues in a way that would get you to rank high on one of those world census rankings(like having very little drug laws to score high on the "highest drug use" census) to get badges.
EDIT: Ninja'd a little.

If you're just purely interested in having lots of trophies, then aim for a Capitalist nation like so;

- Give companies more freedom
- Privatise whenever possible
- Cut public spending whenever possible
- Ban elections as soon as possible (reduces political freedom issues thus increases the chances of getting more industry and economy-boosting issues)
- If it costs money and it isn't related to business or cutting spending, dismiss it
- Ignore reducing crime and protecting the enviornment
- You can be pro civil rights as long as it doesn't cost you
- Spend government funds on business

That's how I run Chaotropia

Just get high rankings, you do that through your issues and if you are in the WA whatever you voted for (if it passes or not that is).
You want the most conservative badge? Choose the conservative option in the issue and for the most liberal badge? Pick a liberal option in the issue. That's how the game works basically, issues change your nation, nations with high rankings in a certain area get a badge.

But seriously, the only tip I could think of is to try and focus on one thing in your issues.

You just gotta keep doing the issues. After so long and your population gets bigger you will eventually gain badges for being in the top percentage of nations in the game for something Example: Top 10% of Basket Weaving or Top 1% Most Devout, the list goes on and on. Just pick issues you think would give a benefit to whatever statistic you think.

Boosting the economy boosts industry as a whole, which covers quite a few trophies. My puppet Chaotropia ranks Top 1% for obesity, stupidity, low taxes and various industries. This Nation is more balanced, but the more bases you cover the harder it is increase your census ranks.

I find the best way is to prioritise what's important to your nation and have key areas of focus. I have one puppet less than six months old which is nearly in the Top 100 for Most Armed, so it is possible to power your way up with a plan in mind.

Just stay in the game a long time (like over a year) and be consistent in how you answer issues. If you are aiming for a more capitalist nation, you will likely get badges for having a high amount of a certain industry. Socialist nations get badges for compassion and all that ghey stuff. You also get them for areas like civil liberties, political freedoms, military size, corruption (or lack of some or all those things) and quite a list of categories. The only thing is, if you go one way on an issue one instance and a different way in another, it won't allow anything in your nation to really take shape, and the only thing you will score high on is averageness.

Other things to remember are that some Census Rankings are harder to climb simultaneously; the economy and the environment can be a bit of a juggling act, for example. Also, several badges have an opposite; Most/Least Corrupt, Highest/Lowest Tax Burden, etc.

I am not sure that is true. Check out the collection of my fairly young left wing and anti capitalist nation.

My tips:
- Set your your issues to the maximum two a day and answer them as often as possible.
- Establish a vision for your nation and be consistent in your answers. The earlier you can do this, the better. Those questions you answer during nation creation do seem to give a major boost in various directions depending on your choices.
- Don't be afraid to dismiss issues if you think all of the choices will harm your goals.
