RMB Nannybot seems a bit arbitrary

I hate to be a nag but I find the RMB nannybot oppressive and arbitrary.

I just tried to post an analogy to the works of the author of A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations - and I can't because his name contains the "D" word.
:eyebrow:

I can say Former Vice President Richard Cheney, but I can't post the guy's name as he uses it. How is one supposed to discuss Richardkensian literature?

Penis is OK, but the "D" word is blocked? :palm:

Decisions on what words need to be blocked should probably be left up to the mods, since they're the ones who have to do the cleanup when somebody complains. However, Dickens is obviously ok, so I've whitelisted it. On the bright side, we're encouraging people to use more creative insults.

AHh... Instead of just stringing together a list of swear words for emphasis people have to think and use vocabulary... wow. :palm:

EDIT: But yes, some word filters can get annoying... like filtering out asset when you're describing someone (or something).

Thanks for the whitelisting! A dear friend of mine, now long passed, was a Dickens scholar. Nice to be able to be able to say Dickens considering how Dickensian some of the issues are!

Yeah, like most offsite forums, there's a short list of "you can't post this" words on NS RMBs. The "nannybot" is a hardcoded filter - violate it and you can't post at all. It cuts WAY down on the administration necessary to enforce the PG-13 rule on NS. I actually support it - because some of our fellow nation founders ARE kids. Those of us who are grownups can find plenty of outlets for our F-bombs. This isn't one of them.

The region I'm in is a colony of Ulthar - and I take my lead from the founder, Mayor for Life, who well articulates the difference between cussing and clever content here in his expectations for forum civility.

In short = more artsy, less fartsy. They have a thread called "In My Pants" that has about 400 posts and not ONE of them crosses the line into outright naughty. I think it's clever as hell. Imagination is WAY more fun than in-your-face.

As much as my region seems to be an invitation to crude remarks, we have had none. Because clever is much more funny.

I had this trouble early when I tried to post "Dick Cheney".

I came to the conclusion that the NS mods weren't a fan of the Bush presidency. :p
