Autologin on forum

If you have autologin turned on and bookmark the forum, close your browser, then visit it, the forum loads before the sidebar, meaning the forum says you're not logged in but the sidebar says you are. (Resolves upon following click.)

Currently autologin does not work if the forum is accessed directly. If you have autologin set up for a nation, and you visit a forum page before a game page, then you won't be logged in as anybody in the forum. This is suboptimal -- ideally you should be able to bookmark the forum, and have any autologin work -- and I'll address this if the forum proves viable.

Another thing I'll do in that case is allow direct logins via the forum, thus eliminating the need to click a forum "Login" link, visit the login page, login, get taken to your home page, then find your way back to where you were.

So something's slightly screwed up now. I went to my nation page, clicked my forum bookmark, and the sidebar has logged me out of my nation. I am logged in on the forum obviously.

I'm not sure if its related to the autologin feature or what but if I leave the window open for the forums, wander off for a bit, and come back like a half-hour or so later, it'll have me as being logged out if I refresh the window, like there's some session timeout feature or something.

Me too -- and to avoid this being a "me too" post, it happens even if I've been active on the forum and jumping around from thread to thread. It seems to be "log out nation page" --> 30mins, regardless of forum activity.

There is a session timeout, and needs to be, so being logged out after 30 minutes of inactivity isn't a bug. But being logged out after 30 minutes of activity is. I'll investigate.

This is happening to me as well. It also happens if I navigate away from NS and then return a few minutes later.

Done. You should now be able to bookmark http://forum.nationstates.net and have autologin work upon using it. Furthermore, you can stay completely within the forum to login and logout, rather than needing to bounce back to the game.

This was a big change and probably introduced a horrendous bug or two. Please report any weirdness!

I just have one question. If you are typing an extremely long post on the forums and it logs you out in the process, when you press "post" and it tells you it logged you out, can you log in and then it will go ahead and post under your name? (sorry if this is not worded clearly)

More generally, it appears you cannot log in if you do not have a cookie for NationStates. I discovered it with a script, but I have duplicated it using IE, which I had never previously used to login to NationStates. A second login attempt with IE worked no better. My conclusion is that this is a problem for people wishing to try a new browser, prople moving to a new computer, and people who like to occasionally clear their cookies for privacy reasons.

I understand in principle how to reach into the Firefox cookie jar in my script to obtain a cookie, so us scripters can work around it (if we're running on a machine that has any kind of cookie for NS at all), but it would seem to be more of a problem for people in one of the cirucmstances above.

I get that mesage too, but although the screen doesn't initially show me as logged into my nation it does do so once I've gone from the front page to these forums... and then I can "return" to the nation's page, and find that I am logged-in there after all...

Yeah, when I loaded my nation page the sidebar didn't load, when I tried to click on something, it gave me an error message. Then when I logged in, it said I didn't accept cookies. Third time, it actually logged me in.

Forumside, when I first went there it didn't load the sidebar normally, but after I'd logged in the third time to the game it did.
