Stupid automatic log off!

Postby Gyflada » Sat Oct 29, 2011 9:38 am

I am currently in the process of creating a storefront, and and was creating a rather large post, and as I got to preview it, it decides to tell me to log in again! So I have no choice, it won't let me go back to my post to copy it, and I have lost over half a days work!
As you can imagine I have really p*ssed off.
Why dont you put a automatic post saving thing on, so if someone is doing the same as I was, then at least it gets saved in the drafts so they can go back it, and then they haven waisted over half their day on imaging, formatting and writing posts!?

I think this is a great idea. This has happened to me on numerous occasions, but I hadn't spent half a says work on it (I feel for you).

I have the same issue as well. If I write a post i got used to Ctrl A, Ctrl C, then submit. (To make sure, you can save it in a txt file on your desktop). Another method is to right click-open in new tab on view your posts, it asks you to login, and when you submit, you get an invalid form try again, but all your work remains. I have lost lots of posts to this security feature...

II. automatic post saving feature would retain posts until the logout timer. So you would still lose half a day's work.

Even with a log me in automatically, I always have to go to my nation page which is always logged on then go back to the forum because the forum still has automatic log off off.

You could always...Make your posts in a non-NS program like notepad or Word...
Like I do...

I could, that is right. But I prefer to use the NS Forums because I have all the buttons at the top to put the codes in, and I would have to keep coming back and looking at them.
Also, I can't preview what I have written so easily, there would be alot of copy and pasting, and that just adds time..

Great idea! On another account, i was making a whole thread about the empress's wedding, and once i had finishes (took me like 1 or 2 hours) it logged me off, i was very angry. >.>
So then i scrapped the whole thread idea.
So this is a great idea.

The codes aren't hard to memorize. I mean, most of it's intuitive.

Control C, Control V.
Hell, in most Word Processors, under "Edit," there is a "select all" command you can use, then Control C it, Control V it into your posts, preview, then edit in Word Processor. That's not much time. Probably, half a minute at most. If you're writing this huge post that takes so long, you're logged out for security purposes, then you can waste 30 extra seconds and check it over.

I'll lay it down bluntly.

The Auto-Log off thing is there to protect us, in case someone wants to use your nation for nefarious purposes.
If you feel like you've been logged off mid-post, then copy the text, refresh screen, and resume typing, or save it in a literal draft.

This. When the same thing happened to me a long time ago, I learned to save before I post. Nowadays every serious thing I post has a back-up in Notepad.

Either preview your post every few minutes, or open the forums in another tab, or draft your posts in another program.

I will give it to you, that your points are good ones and they are clear, but for people like me who are severely dyslexic they aren't easy to memorize.

There's at least one huge thread on this already (somewhere). The bottom-line is: we do need to auto-log you off at some point, BUT the forum should still not throw out your text if you're mid-post. It should ask you to log back in and your text should still be there.

We've filed a request for this feature with the people who created this forum software (phpBB), but I don't know if/when it will happen.

Whenever you are trying to submit a post from your earlier login, (but you are logged in) you get your text back in tact, or when posts were submitted while you was writing. phpBB is written in php, which is object-oriented. Perhaps someone could implement the logged-out error as an invalid form exception, the user could have their data back.

Why do you need to log people off?

Anyway, the forum has begun acting up in much the same way it did a while ago. Basically, I get logged out every time I close the browser. As I usually just follow the links in the notification e-mails rather than going through my nations front-page this is beginning to get a wee bit on my nerves...

I've never had the problem of losing my work even after getting automatically logged off, I just go back a page to where I was posting and all the text is still there thankfully.

Don't use the "I never forget" excuse. It can happen. And you'll be happy you got logged off.

hitting the 'back'-button of your browser often magically brings your text back.

Sorry, but having worked as a supporter for several years I've developed a very low tolerance for stupidity (as well as an extremely well-honed poker face). If you’re too stupid to realize that, when using a public computer, you should always use In Private browsing (if available) and not activate the Auto Log-in or Remember Me function then...

In any case, let’s just agree that the logout function is justified (after all, plenty of stupid/forgetful people out there). That still doesn’t explain why I get logged out every time I close the browser. I’ve asked the game to remember me and so I would expect it to do so...

Yes. Because everyone is you.
Now the stars they are all angled wrong,
And the sun and the moon refuse to burn.
But I remember a message,
In a demon's hand:
"Dread the passage of Jesus, for he does not return."

I certainly hope not...

Still... You shouldn't drive a car without having a drivers licens and you shouldn't use a public computer without knowing a bit about it. Take an ICDL if needed...

Anyway, this is way off topic. Still no answer as to why I'm logged of every time I close the browser...

Well, what "logged in" actually means is that you've authenticated with the server, i.e. gone through the step of providing a username and password, and having that validated. From that point on, your web browser is just returning a token to the server that says, "Remember me? I already authenticated."

So the server is holding a table of authentication tokens, and adding a new token every time it creates a session for somebody. Which is more efficient than having to authenticate every single mouse click. It's faster for the server to lookup which one of maybe five thousand current session tokens you represent than which one of 90,000 accounts. And when you log out, it removes the token.

But if you never log out, the table would grow and grow. Eventually, there would be the same number of session tokens as accounts, at which point you might as well not use tokens at all: you might as well just scrap the now completely redundant token table and just rely on usernames and passwords. And in practice, soon there would be more tokens than accounts, because of people switching machines and browsers.

tl;dr: automatic logoff prevents the server from consuming all available RAM in the known universe.
