Ok, folks. Just to let you know, last night, I've found solutions to a significant chunk of the issues coming up with the dark theme and the new TG system, so right now, it's just a matter of knocking out the remaining few, testing it, and then submitting it. You'll probably see something later on this evening (EST/GMT-5).

Out of interest, how is the dark theme set up? CSS?

Yeah, it's basically a second stylesheet overlaid on the default theme.

A suppressed post from someone on your ignore list shows up with a red background on the posting screen when you scroll though the Topic Review. Is that deliberate?

Since, prior to a few minutes ago, I have surprisingly never used the ignore features either gameside or on the forums, I apparently didn't catch that little problem. Really, what happened was that, when trying to figure out what a particular part of the HTML pertains to, I'll make the background color something garish so that it'll stand out when I look for it. Since I didn't see it showing up anywhere (because of the aforementioned non-use of ignore), I forgot about it and it got left in. Thanks for letting me know though! :)

Hey, folks. No, I haven't forgotten about this; there just hasn't been anything blowing up lately with the theme that required immediate attention and I've been a little busy in non-internet life. Regardless, I'm back and am working on a few new updates.

The biggest ones are reworking the FAQ page (namely to remove the white JG pictures that are on every section heading and adding color to the tables to bring them more in line with the rest of the site), tweaking the sidebar some (getting rid of the flag and preventing the new telegram notification from taking up two lines), and tweaking how ignored posts/users are shown on the forums. There are other little fixes here and there, but they're the usual bug fixes and not really worth going into detail.

Anyway, the revised sidebar and FAQ page might look like this: http://i.imgur.com/qMHJSuv.png It's neat, it's tidy, and yeah, it lacks the little flag icon, but I've never been a particularly big fan of it. It's always seemed to be a source of clutter there, regardless of the theme.

Hilariously, you can have 999,999 telegrams before the number gets shoved down into a new line below it: http://i.imgur.com/9rre9vv.png I don't think 999,999 telegrams is a real possibility, but either way, it's good to have. (The servers would undoubtedly blow up before then)

Finally, with the ignored posts/users bit on the forums, I added more padding on the top of the post so that the notification is more centered and am considering adding red text to it: http://i.imgur.com/s5ouGME.png (And, The Republic of Lanos, you were just being used as an example. :P )

Thoughts and opinions?

Aw, I liked the little flag icon. My name isn't long enough to put it on a new line, and besides, it fit the colour scheme.

Yes, Google Chrome's developer tools are a godsend. I don't know how people did webdev work before it.

Questions?

Postby Freechrist » Wed Dec 18, 2013 8:42 pm

I never noticed the Themes. I would like to know the difference between DEFAULT, Liberal, and Conservative themes.
What would be nice is if you would allow full creativity in making custom themes.
"Theme Maker" if you will?

It would be cool.

I like the dark theme, with the clean lines and glow effects are nice. But it's too dark for me.
And the DEFAULT is too bright to me.
For my personal preference, i love shades of grey with some custom colors. Possibly to go with my Nations flag.
Just wondering if this is a possibility.

Thanks =).

Probably not, because speaking from experience on another website I'm helping run, that sort of tool is basically a total pain in the ass unholy demon of a thing to code, and that's for a site that was already designed from the outset to have a lot of customization tools. Nationstates... wasn't.

I posted this in the TDT but it'd make more sense here.

Image

The top left corner of the screen shows this big black rectangle where the book covers normally are. This isn't a problem using a standard theme but when everything else contrasts it so starkly it's really distracting.

I've discovered that y going into the Element Console and deleting

Code: Select all
<div id="createdby">...</div>

The white box disappears without affecting anything else (save the rest of the sidebar moving up, which is a good thing). However that obviously goes away after you reload the page, so it isn't even a temporary fix.

The only issue with that is, it's an ad to sell Max's books, which is still pretty much the point behind why NS came about. I'm not going to delete it outright. Replace it with a revised ad, yes, but not take it out entirely.

Can you at least replace it with an ad that adblocker will block

That's because it's not your standard ad. It's just a picture with a link, like the NationStates header picture is just that - a picture and a link to the NS home page. It's not using javascript or flash or anything else like what Google Ads uses.
