NationStates Century Dark Theme

Postby Northrop-Grumman » Wed Sep 28, 2011 10:25 am

Now that the dark theme is officially available through your Settings page ( Thanks [violet] and Max! ) and does not require the use of browser addons or other tweaking, I felt it necessary to open a new thread that would deal with any questions, concerns, or bugs that might arise, instead of trying to stick with the old thread where there's about five pages worth of information that is now irrelevant to you.

An important note to make is that, since the theme is largely complete, I'll be updating it really only when there's a problem that arises that needs to be fixed. I have never been the sort to make changes for changes sake, so you do not have to worry about everything suddenly going different for no good reason.

If you're seeing anything that's either broken or simply doesn't look right, please do post below. It's much appreciated!

Tips

If you're wanting your text to be invisible or semi-invisible on both the default theme and the dark theme, then you should use these color codes:
  • Odd numbered posts (basically the 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc posts on each page) - #F5F7F4
  • Even numbered posts (basically the 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc posts on each page) - #FDFFFC
  • If you're doing the semi-invisible, not-really-caring-whether-people-see-it text - #FFFFFF or white

<<If something blows up spectacularly, please feel free to drop me a TG. I don't always check the forums, but I try to load up my nation at least once a day.>>

Could the admins try to make the default settings page standard in Dark, or no?

I assume you're talking about the report/letter background that it has? I removed that mainly because the dark theme is intended to be a bit better on the eyes and the default background is exceptionally bright.

I am really liking this dark theme. I didn't want to mess with the add-ons and such, but now that it is an official theme it is really great. Thank you for your work on it NG.

Anyway, is there any way to have the dark theme work for the forums as well? I mean, this theme is really easier on the eyes, right up untill you go to the forums and then the contrast it almost blinding at first.

It should be working fine for the forums, but I'd suggest you clear your browser's cache. That might be the problem.

What browser and operating system are you using? I'd like to see if I can try to replicate the problem and see if it's something I can fix.

I am running windows 7 home edition, and I am using internet explorer 9.

You know, I really should change to a new browser. I think I may be the last person in the world to still be using explorer.

Well, I just tried it on Windows 7 Professional and IE 9 and it works fine here. I'd almost recommend trying another browser, at least, to see if it's really caused by IE or not.

If it's not a browser problem, then it might be that sync issue between the forums and the main game that seems to be coming up lately, which is making forum icons, the search function, and viewing your posts break. It may be causing the forums not to recognize that the main game is using the dark theme and just sticking with the default.

If this helps, Google Chrome on W7 is working fine with it.

Nullarni, your nation's theme is currently set to Default. You might be accessing the Dark theme via the subdomain or via Northrop-Grumman's original browser add-on, maybe?

Only 16% of our visitors use some form of Internet Explorer, incidentally. It's only marginally more popular here than Safari. Firefox wins with Chrome close behind.

I smell someone fudging the facts. We all know that only Nullarni uses explorer, and Nullarni isn't 16% of the forum anymore.

This might be the reason why I can't change back to a white background. Then again, I'm in love with the NS Dark Theme.

 I switched to the default theme on my phone a couple hours before you checked what I was doing. It wasn't liking the dark theme, for some reason all the margins were messed up.

Oh, update! The dark theme is working on the forums now! Strange. I don't know what changed. Thanks for the help guys.

This is really minor, and something most people won't have to worry about, but the image transition for the Game Mod (and, presumably, Forum Mod) badge isn't smooth.

Incidentally, I quite like the glowing effect around the flag.

And the sun and the moon refuse to burn.
But I remember a message,
In a demon's hand:
"Dread the passage of Jesus, for he does not return."

Actually, Erastide and presumably the other forum mod badges have NO transparency, it's just the name on a white-box.

This is actually a problem that's all over the game, unfortunately. Many pictures/icons/etc weren't exactly designed to be used for a dark theme so they'll often be a little pixelized, have a ring of white around them, or in the case of the forum mod tags, just be a block of white. It's never a problem on the default themes, though. I'm intending one of these days to take a look to see if I can maybe clean them up a little and introduce some transparency.

Hrm, yeah, I just checked and that's just an issue with the theme; I'll have that fixed in the next update. Thanks!

When viewing certain world factbook entries, especially TRR's, the text stays black and on the grey background it is really hard to read.

That's because I set the text to black, rather than the default colour (which is a dark grey).

Actually, this reminds me since I've noticed the black text in your sig quite a bit. What's the BBcode color you're using to do that? Is it just "black" or is it hex code? EDIT: And how about the red and blue text for the SC and Gameplay too?

This is something that I can potentially change because I had to do it for The East Pacific. Their world factbook entry (I keep writing Facebook in here >.<) is actually spaced out by letters that are specifically the color of the background so that they are invisible unless highlighted. Of course, when the first dark theme came out, all the spacing letters turned white and it looked ghastly, so I had to write a bit of code in to automatically change that equivalent hex code to one that matched the dark theme background.
