NationStates Dark Theme (Moving to New Thread)

Postby Northrop-Grumman » Fri Jul 22, 2011 12:29 pm

After seeing the thread in this subforum where people wanted a darker theme for the game, I decided to take it upon myself to create one for people to use for the time being until a more well-done one is made by the admins. It's compatible with Firefox, Chrome. Opera, and Safari, so far that I've tested.

Here are a number of screenshots that I've taken from around NS that are also in that link:
Forum
Thread
Nation Page
World Assembly
The World

Instructions by Browser:

Firefox:

Chrome:

Safari:*
  • Install the User CSS extension by selecting "Run" when attempting to download it.
  • Copy the code from this website.
  • On the browser, press the "A" button towards the top left of the window.
  • Type in "NationStates Dark Theme" for the Name, "http://*.nationstates.net/*" for the URLs, and paste the code that you copied earlier, then select Save. It should look like this when it's done.

Opera:*
  • Right click on this link and save.
  • Navigate to the main NS website.
  • Click on the "Opera" button, select "Settings", then "Quick Preferences", then "Edit Site Preferences."
  • On the "Display" tab, select "Choose...", select the previously saved CSS file, and select "Ok".
  • Navigate to the NS forums and do the same thing that you did for the main site.
  • Also, if you're planning to use either the Conservative or Liberal themes, you're going to have to apply this theme to them to make it work.
  • After reloading, the theme should be applied.

Internet Explorer:
For all versions of IE, styles/themes are applied globally, which means that if you install the NS Dark Theme, it will apply it to every website. While the NS website would look just fine with the theme installed, all other websites would look pretty terrible. Examples of this would be MSNBC, YouTube, and Facebook. This is not a problem that I can fix in any such way; it is entirely up to Microsoft.

*Note: If you're using either Safari or Opera, you're going to have to manually update the theme whenever another version of the theme is released.

Change Log:

09/24/11
- Removed background, paperclip, and nation flag pictures, realigned text, reduced the sizes of the input boxes, and changed font on Settings page.

08/23/11
- Fixed problem where the Embassies Cancelled table was still in its original colors.

08/22/11
- Darkened background of table where "code" BBcode is displayed.
- Changed thread page numbers (these show up where there are lists of threads) to be darker.

08/21/11
- Fixed problem with using the "pre code" BBcode where the background and text would both be white.
- Replaced the Liberal and Conservative picture banners for their respective themes with the transparent NS picture because of too much brightness.

08/08/11
- Changed font color to allow characters previously used as hidden spacing (users used to make the font the same color as background to do this)

08/07/11
- Darkened backgrounds of nation lists (daily census), regional message boards, and world assembly resolutions
- Removed globe in upper right hand corner on nation page
- Changed color scheme of form at the bottom of the page where posts are inputted and the bar at the bottom of every forum page where posts/threads are filtered

08/06/11
- Fixed problem in Chrome where submit buttons were entirely black

07/23/11
- Removed bright WA logo from left navigation bar on Nation Page
- Changed color scheme on the info box that appears when posting or answering issues

I'll try to provide whatever technical support I can for it and will try to update it if there are any problems. Just post below if you have them.

I've got to admit, this looks superb. I'll have a look at setting this up for myself later.

Just added it to GreaseMonkey in Firefox and works great!
Still shows Globe in upper right, though it's hardly an issue.
No longer any issues! Yay!

Ok I got it to work. Looks great.

Two issues though; Nation names don't show up clearly on the Census reports or the RMB, and the lettering on buttons (e.g., "Send Telegram", "Lodge Message") isn't visible. I'm not sure if it's just me or if this is something wrong with the theme in general.

I'm running Google Chrome if it matters.

It appears that there's something going on with Chrome that is making the lettering on the buttons not visible; everything for the most part shows up clearly in Firefox. I did just log into NS via Chrome and the problem you've described is there, so I'm going to have to take a look at trying to fix that problem.

EDIT: Also, the problem with the nation names not showing up clearly is because everything on NS that's a link is apparently green. I'm going to have to find some other color that works well on a grey/black background or darken the light grey where most of the problems are.

Alright, I fixed the problem with the submit buttons. All you have to do is update the theme. Thanks for the input!

I'll get to the other issue early this week, when I've got some more time.

Updated again.
  • I darkened the background on the census reports and the RMB so the green links/nations will show up better and be less eye-straining.
  • I changed the text color of the Options tab at the bottom of the Post A Reply page from grey to white.
  • I removed the NationStates globe that appears on the upper right corner of the main site's pages because it was apparently not showing up properly in Chrome.

If the green text on grey-black background still continues to be annoying for people and if the brightness of the white text in general is too much, please say so.

Just asking, how would I go about changing it back to the regular theme for NS if I wanted to? First time using styler or w/e.

Edit: Never mind clicking buttons helps.

EDIT:
Nevermind, got it to work. It's just a little annoying that it flashes to the white before going to the black (Using Chrome on Windows 7)

Firefox just updated to Version 6.0 today, and thus it insists that the Stylish addon is not compatible with that version. However, according to Mozilla's own compatibility checker, the addon is actually compatible all the way up to Version 7.0a2.

If you want to get around this problem, you're either going to have to wait until the author updates the addon or you're going to have to force Firefox to not do compatibility checking. You can do the latter as follows:
  • In the address bar, type in "about:config" and hit Enter.
  • Click "I'll Be Careful, I Promise!"
  • Right-click on the list, select "New", then select "Boolean".
  • Type in "extensions.checkCompatibility.6.0" in the box that pops up that asks for the preference name then hit "Ok".
  • In the next box that pops up, make sure "false" is selected and then press "Ok".
  • Restart Firefox.

To change this rule/preference so that Firefox can do compatibility checking, do the following:
  • In the address bar, type in "about:config" and hit Enter.
  • Click "I'll Be Careful, I Promise!"
  • In the filter bar, type in "extensions.checkCompatibility.6.0"
  • When that rule/preference appears in the list, just double-click on it so that the value becomes "true".
  • Close the tab and restart Firefox.

How do you download it. it looks fantastic
Kalaspia-Shimarata's flag represents the Union between K&S. The dark blue represents the sea and the light blue represents the sky. In Kalashi language considers light blue and dark blue to be different colours. England colonised, and unified K&S, between 1774 and 1953, and English, light blue and dark blue are considered to be the same colour. Therefore, the contrast between dark blue and light blue represents the union, but the differences between K&S where as blue being two but simultaneously one colour represents K&S being two, but simultaniously one entity. The opposite to the symmetry represents the unity and indipendance of K&S, whilst also representing the Kalashi culture of opposite symmetry.KS is 75% Christian, hence the cross.
