To Whom It May Concern:

Please excuse the title to this thread, but it serves multiple purposes; as it catches one's attention, and at the same time reflects the question being asked.

We've noticed that there are a select few who choose to use vulgarity whenever they reply to another's thread; and we were wondering if there isn't a word default within the programing, which would disallow correct-print vulgarity from ever being published ?

Not a BIG issue, and as of yet none of our posts / replies have been infected by such childish and ignorant smut; however, even though such smut *may* have it's place somewhere in today's world, we do not believe it to be needed here at NationStates.

There is a word filter system available in phpBB, however it's easily breakable with bb code; at least it was the last time I checked. I don't see the need to swear myself, but at the same time if other people wish to express themselves that way, it doesn't bother me in the least. The C-bomb being the exception though. Not a very pleasent word in my view.

The system of moderation we have now works just fine.

It's amusing to use the phpBB system to auto-replace swears with harmless cutesy words though.

Just adding on though, while it's fine within the posts, it is not with thread titles as they pop up in the sidebar. Those are held to a stricter standard.

Swearing is fine, but like anything else it can be used in excess. From the rules, we've got this:

The standard for both forums and game is the US movie rating "PG-13". Mild swearing may be tolerated, mild sexuality may be hinted, but explicit or excessive versions of either or both may result in proportional mod response.

As for what that means in regards to swearing, occasional use of bad language isn't something anybody is going to bat an eye at. It becomes an issue when a user can't seem to make a post without bad language or gratuitous use of it. The occasional "What the fuck?!" is totally okay. "You're a shithead." is not because it's flaming another user. "Fucking shitheads fucking motherfucking bitches!" is excessive.
