No, they cannot.[violet] wrote:The game code uses a nation's name as its ID, an unfortunate design decision that we are stuck with. Renaming a nation would break all references to it in regions, player Dossiers, the WA, etc.
As such, if you have a typo in your nation name, you have 2 (obvious) options:
(1) Create a new nation *without* the typo to use instead.
(2) Roleplay the nation name as what you want it to be. (This selection is really your only choice if the name you want has been taken by another nation.)

Linux and the X wrote:It is in fact possible for admins to change nation names, but this is rarely done; I think I remember seeing it done a total of three times, and I've been here a decent while. Generally it is done for estalished nations whose name violates a rule, and the alternative is deletion. In such cases the admids ask the player what to change their name to.

[violet] wrote:Yep, the only way we can change a nation's name without cloning it (and thus breaking dossiers, the WA system, etc etc) is if the only modification is to capitalization.

If a long-time player was bugged about how she'd forgotten to capitalize the second word of her nation name, though, it would not be crazy to request me to fix that.

Actually, would anything go wrong if nations had a separate user-editable Display Name?
So, the nation name (for links, storage, whatever) would remain stuff like (for example) "my_minds_eye", but the Display Name could then read "My Minds Eye".
First implementation could be enforcing that whatever that user enters in the editable field in the settings page would have to boil down to "my_minds_eye" but in whatever capitalization or space/underscore usage the user wants. And the same approach might be used for capitalization of region names?
And perhaps later on it might be possible the user could edit the Display Name to read something entirely different (as long as it remains unique).
