Annoying Google ad

Postby Omigodtheykilledkenny » Sat Aug 01, 2009 11:20 am

Is there some way NationStates can "opt out" of certain banner ads on the Web Site, particularly in this case the Evony one? I know these guys really want to attract horny 12-year-olds to play their game, but I don't want a pair of computer-generated breasts staring at me every time I log onto this site. :palm:

A client-side fix, if you use Firefox, is Adblock Plus. My NationStates is ad-free, along with most other websites, with it.

Yeah, that's probably my best option. I forgot completely about it. Thanks.

Chrome's super speed does make up for it though...

Those Evony ads are everywhere, aren't they! I think the annoyance factor is not so much what they are but how frequently they appear.

They are helping keep this site running, though!

I understand about the ads paying the bills, [Violet] but I'd rather pay you / NS and have no ads

Like NS2's Ambassador status, only all it does is remove ads? I'm fine with that; as long as we don't have to pay for basics such as custom flags...

No, it's not the frequency - it's the boobage.

I'm A-OK with the same ads popping up over and over. But Lord knows that my gf is going to look over my shoulder and go, "What the hell are you looking at?!"

...did I really just say boobage in an NS post?

I've seen that ad sooo many times, but I still don't know what kind of game Evony is.,.. I just associate it with boobs. Very effective ad.

Chrome is awesome, but they will never introduce an ad blocking mechanism as Google's main profit comes through advertising. Believe me, they do all kinds of crazy stuff (they even make a hardware/software set to help produce radio shows) but it all ties back to advertising (those units will request ads from google in much the same way adsense works). So I use Firefox. Although I can't wait for Chrome OS.

You can remove ads while using chrome, but it involves running your computer through a proxy. Here's a how-to.

Apparently Nationstates isn't the only site getting hammered by those goddamn Evony ads.

Yeah pretty much anything with the word "game" related is getting nailed by them (get it, hammered and nailed, lol). <.<

Anyways they're all over NSD too.

I wouldn't mind if there was a "Get Firefox" ad if you didn't mind. Besides, that may be the ad that many wouldn't mind seeing.

It isn't the first time Google has been pushing such ads.

Personally I have no problems with the booby adds. More so with the ones for Scientology. I think it's better for kids to see some cleavage than getting indoctrinated into a dangerous cult.

I think the ads could be messing up my internet, not only Nationstates but player/region created forums (I keep getting redirected to different sites without clicking anything). Anyways was concerned when I saw this from my virus prevention program:

Risk Name:
MSIE ADODB.Stream Object File Installation Weakness
Severity: High
Attacker Url: http://www.nationstates.net/page=dossier/start=15
Network traffic was detected that matches the signature of a known attack
