Corruption increase of 2255% precent in one day, wat?!?!?

Postby Nerdayn » Mon Feb 19, 2018 3:58 am

So I'm mostly playing nationstates to pass time when I run tests at work but anyway, I have set some goals for my nation to strive after, one being to lower taxes, the other to minimise corruption and today I checked my progress... 45...

I checked my history graph and found that in the interval of ONE DAY my corruption had jumped from 2 all the way up to 45.2, wat? That's 2255% in one day!

Jesus, what kind of solution did I take to give me such a massive increase, I mean I'm not saying that as a defence I'm genuinely curious what the issue was because I don't remember anyone being that related to corruption but that is my own opinion.

What decisions have you made recently? Some decisions can blow some out of proportion. Similar thing happened with Pacifism, where the whole world went up by about 30 in one day (February 8th - February 9th)

Other users cannot look that far back in your history. Look back at your nation activity history and see what you find. There are several issues that can pump corruption up that far.

It is not possible for us normal nations to view what decisions you made regarding corruption, but stats can jump by much higher amountd than that and do so quite regularly. If you previously had very little corruption, suddenly encouraging it or removing major preventative measures can cause massive jumps.

When you start from a low level, it's easier to get huge percentages.

See news page: https://www.nationstates.net/page=news/ ... index.html

That's responsible for pretty much all crazy changes you see on Feb 8.

Checking the Beta for you, seems like you have around 18 Kickbacks Per Hour beforehand, so there might be one issue that you chose that brought the stats up. And this was further increased by 144% after the Beta has passed.

Well, I don't think I can look it up, I only have the trend graph to look at, maybe I chose a really corrupting answer to a solution the same day as the implementation, who knows

Note that the "Old" number in an Archived beta tells you what number you would have if we still used the old algorithm--not what number you had back at the time the beta was implemented. The difference is that the former includes the effects of every decision you've made since implementation as well.

The jump was 100% caused by the beta, mostly because the new system counts Nerdayn's lack of any restrictions on money in politics as contributing towards corruption. This is one of the few political freedoms that Nerdayn has; the rest of the voting process is tightly controlled, which protects the interests of those in power and generally leads to higher than average corruption.

Oh interesting, I obviously knew about the second part about voting, but I had no idea that Nerdayn had such lax laws on money in politics, this is probably because of the long periods of inactivity I had so hopefully some issues about that comes a long

As an aside, changes are coded in absolute values, aren't they? If the OP thinks this is bad, wait till you run into:

Issue #95: 5-point (years) drop in lifespan
#219: 3000-point drop in I.T. industry, 100-pt drop in sci.adv.
#285: 2500-point drop in retail industry
#640: 1800-point drop in timber woodchipping
... to name the most 'memorable' ones.

After weathering so many severe shocks, I'd say my economy is doing pretty well! Fortunately, I skated around that one killer-issue which destroys your economy, forgot the number...

I remember back when Nerdyan was new and i answered every issue regardless, this was a while back and I'm pretty sure there were much less issues then, anywho i ended up answering duplicate "hard choice" issues several times kinda borking some "stats", :b
-
I also think that my assumption that the spike was caused by new systems/features not being applied was probably right, lol
