Why is my employment so low?

My economy seems pretty good but employment is almost 50%. What's going on?

keep working on policies that expand industry. You might just have crummy pro-employment policies.
So the CCP won't let me be or let me be me so let me see, they tried to shut me down on CBC but it feels so empty without me.

That's because of your high Lifespan and relatively average Economic Freedom.

Employment measures the percentage of working population over the total population, which means that children and the eldery are counted in the same basket as the unemployed. Nations with high Lifespan and thus a high proportion of senior citizens will have lower Employment rates by default.

Higher Economic Freedom and running a Socialist economy also correlate with more Employment. Seems contradictory, but in reality all that a Socialist economy truly does in this game is add a -100 value to your Economic Freedom which is not considered when calculating other stats, and it is identical to a Capitalist economy otherwise. A Socialist economy just gives a boost to Employment independently of your Economic Freedom.

We (OP and I) have about the same economic freedom and I'm a little bit ahead in lifespan; I'm currently fluctuating between the top 5-6% for employment.

The biggest driver I've seen of high unemployment is taxes. I used to have pretty mid-level employment (like 50% or so in the world), I cut my taxes from 40% to 19% and employment shot up into the rather high range.

My suggestion here would be to try dropping your taxes, OP. If you want it to go up try taking tax cut options in issues when they pop up. If you're okay with a little bit of corruption exploiting weaker nations for their resources can drop your tax burden too.

Your people are both charming and rude. Does that mean they're really good at hating each other and playing "office politics" to eliminate people they dislike without getting caught being hateful?

The mix of charm and rudeness in a community doesn't necessarily indicate a proficiency in office politics. It may reflect diverse personalities, communication styles, or cultural nuances. Understanding and open communication are key.Nrega
