[DRAFT] A logo is worth 1000 words

Postby BadRNG » Mon Apr 25, 2022 5:37 am

In East Lebatuck's recent attempt to claim a part of Moltovea, the East Lebatuckese sprayed a logo all over Moltovean cities.
Coincidentally, this logo resembles the logo of the Noh Weir Daily, a local newspaper in a small town in @@NAME@@.
Some @@DEMONYMPLURAL@@ now say that the logo should be changed.

Option 1

"We should not support those East Lebatuckese in any way possible!" says @@RANDOMNAME_1@@, member of the @@NAME@@ Peace Society. "They are attacking hospitals and other areas filled with civilians! We can't show any support for those aggressive imperialists. Noh Weir Daily has to change their logo, and all other logos that resemble it as well!"

artists have to follow a rulebook with 762 pages when making a logo

Option 2

"You can't be serious @@RANDOMNAME_1@@" says @@RANDOMNAME_2@@, chairman of the Noh Weir Daily. "Their logo is literally the letter 'N', and we just happen to have that letter in our initials. Our logo currently shows the 'N', 'W' and 'D' from Noh Weir Daily and people should understand that that's why we have this logo, not because we support anyone."

most copyright trials are acquitted because it was mere coincidence

Option 3

"I agree with @@RANDOMNAME_2@@, but I also see @@RANDOMNAME_1@@'s point..." says @@RANDOMNAME_3@@, known for caring about everyone. "I suggest a compromise: The Noh Weir Daily can keep their logo, but only if they clearly state to not associate with East Lebatuck anywhere the logo can be seen."

any symbol comes with a book titled "Things we don't associate with"

Option 4

"Even if the logo would support the East Lebatuckese, the New Weir Daily should have the freedom to choose whatever logo they want." Says civil rights activist @@RANDOMNAME_4@@. "Newspapers should have freedom of speech, so should their logo. Remove all restrictions on newspapers' logos and content and let them publish whatever they want!"

most newspapers have a section called "terrible people that we should harm"

As this is my first attempt at writing an issue ever, please give as much feedback as possible, I'd like to improve :)

Hello, BadRNG – welcome to Got Issues :-D It's always fun to have more players come dip their feet in the waters of issue writing.

Based on your use of macros, I'm guessing you're already familiar with the "FAQ & How To Write An Issue" thread – good on you for that. Definitely keep it in mind during your first issue efforts – there's a lot to remember!

My feedback based on this first posted draft would be the following:

1) Going for current events is a solid source of inspiration. Make sure that the issue being presented to the leader based on that inspiration is something worthy of national-level attention. Would a president, prime minister, or monarch really be the one called on to change the logo of a small local newspaper? Unless the nation has State Press, that's probably not even something the government influences. Why isn't this being brought up to the newspaper itself? Is there something else that might stir people up that is more significant for Leader?

2) Make sure it is believable that somebody would make a legitimate stink over whatever the situation is. For example, I could believe that a company with a logo that looks like a spray-painted Z might receive pressure based on the ongoing Russian war on Ukraine, but just including a Z somewhere in a lettermark or workmark? I don't imagine LaZBoy has received any grief over it. In other words, don't have the complaining party be easily ignorable as just some wacko stirring the pot.

3) It can be helpful to think about the personalities and characterizations of the speakers. If all of the options sound like they're spoken in the same voice, it gets a bit dull. Having somebody who is more excitable, another who is self-righteous, a third who's confused, and other traits like that can inform the way they present their arguments, and make their speech feel more natural.

4) Each option or argument should be presented with a potentially convincing argument for why it should be selected. Even if it seems like something should be obvious a priori – for example, that something called Noh Weir Daily would have the initials NWD without it being a political statement, have the speaker give a better argument than "people should just understand it." For a compromise position, its supporter(s) should be arguing why a compromise is the best choice, not just saying "I like both of the above." Each speaker is trying to convince Leader to take a position that will commit government time, resources, and political capital – not simply to explain themselves.

Hey Verdant Haven, thanks for the welcome! :)

I have read the "FAQ & How To Write An Issue", but I surely wouldn't say I know it honestly. I am trying to follow everything that is there.

1) That does make a lot of sense... Would it be better if I made it about the logo of the political party of the leader? That way it makes sense to get to them.

2) I got my inspiration from a local tv broadcasting channel, which is called 'Omroep Zeeland' and the logo is a 'Z' in a 'O'... Not really spray-painted but it is the exact same letter.
Now I just said that as information, I do think you're right... If I would make the differences between logos minimal, would that work? (e.g. red vs blue)

3) I tried to make the first more passionate than the others, but once again I see your point. I will have to do some work to change this though, so don't expect an update today or tomorrow :P

4) Once again, excellent point. I did not think of it as persuading Leader and more as explaining. Once again, I will do some changes soon.

Overall thanks for the feedback, I hope I can improve and do the things you told me :D

Re: being a party logo, that's definitely more in line with something Leader would influence, though it should also be remembered that not all nations will have political parties (the game is full of autocrats, monarchies, etc). Perhaps an unspecified part of the government seal? If worded well, one does not necessarily even need to say exactly what the offending symbol is - just something like "those bad guys have started using a symbol that looks an awful lot like the seal we use on official paperwork... should we change our seal?" That way it fits for almost any nation, while still presenting the same fundamental problem.

Has Omroep Zeeland faced protests? Unfortunately I can't read Dutch, so I wasn't able to see if there are any articles about it. I can see how a big white Z in a circle could raise hackles though! Thank you for the real-life example.

I look forward to the next draft :-) No worries on not being "today or tomorrow" - here in Got Issues we usually recommend spending at least a couple of weeks gathering feedback and updating drafts, if not more.

I feel like this is way too on the nose for current events. It's fine to go for inspiration based on real-life events, but you need to make it less on the nose for this draft.

Your options are bland and need to reflect the talking points of this issue. Spice them up and add character to your speakers.

Your introduction also needs work and it doesn't sound like a fluid introduction, more like a list of choppy sentences that attempts to be an introduction. Since I assume you are new, read this helpful guide to get you acquainted with everything: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=424657
