[Draft] A Europium Discovery

Postby 0cala » Fri Feb 11, 2022 2:58 pm

Description:
The day before yesterday a neighboring country called Santia Blanca found out about Europium and now is placing troops near your border.

Choice 1:
"Really? This is unacceptable!" yells patriotic gigachad @@randomname@@ "We should kick them back to the eastern most city! We have been bullied by neighbors for years! this time it's time to end it once in for all! All hail @@Nation@@!"

Fallout 1:
People in @@Nation@@ more patriotic than ever.

Choice 2:
"Maybe we should give them land that has Europium?" says idiotic hug it out @@randomname@@ " It will be better for you and this country. It says here that the land is only 23 miles apart" he then whispers "from our capital city"

Fallout 2:
The borders are fixed between @@Nation@@ and its Neighbors

Not a particularly well-written one and certainly doesn't do a good job mimicking the conflict.

If you want to revisit this one instead: Some American politicians (including the right-wing Heritage Foundation think tank) say that the USA is dependent on PR China for rare earth metals, which are used to make things like smartphones and electric cars.

Did we? Mining Blues is about human rights abuses in the REM supply chain in a foreign country (and doesn't raise the question of dependency on that country). There are no issues about whether @@NAME@@ should rely on one foreign country to supply so much of its REM needs, regardless of how well the miners are being treated. There is a difference between those two topics.

* * * * *

And to 0cala: Your issue still has multiple problems. For starters, it is still riffing on the "foreign country has found out about europium deposits in @@NAME@@ and has amassed a shitton of soldiers to take them over" line you were running with in February and while almost no detail has been added compared to February's draft, even though you said just before you updated it that you were looking into revisiting the angle. There's nothing wrong with you carrying on with this particular theme - it's your issue, not mine - but what Australian rePublic said about it at the time is still true today.

Secondly, europium is not a sexy element. It is used to make old-fashioned CRT televisions and fluorescent lightbulbs - everyday items that have long been superceded by their LED cousins, not cutting-edge military technologies or wonder-gizmos that will automatically improve the quality of life of whoever gets to it first. Even the ever-reliable Wikipedia struggles to come up with anything more relevant than that. How technologically far behind is Santia Blanca that it wants Europium that badly?

And finally, the fact that you characterise the two characters as being a "patriotic gigachad" who wants to remove the Blancans to "the eastern most city" (even though they haven't even invaded yet!) and an "idiotic hug it out" who wants to surrender land that's "23 miles apart... from our capital city" - similar, if not identical, descriptions to the ones you were using in February - definitely doesn't make the case any better. Issues should not contain perfect options - and option one seems a little bit too perfect.
