[DRAFT]Houston, We Have A Contact Problem.

Postby Remulia » Thu Nov 04, 2021 7:56 pm

My first draft. Wish me luck.

[Tiltle]: Houston, We Have A Contact Problem.

[Desc]: After the @@DEMONYM@@ probe called Traveller drilled a hole in the ice sheet of "Europia", a moon of the planet JupitAAH, scientists around the world have been amazed by the images that the probe has taken about the lifeforms that inhabit there. Weeks of investigations has revealed a mysterious creature similar to an octopus that presents behaviors that indicate sapience. Now, after weeks of celebrations and more investigations, several people have gathered in your office to discuss what to do with the creatures, which have been called "Europians".

[Validity]: Nations that have a Space Program

[Option 1]:"This is a great opportunity we should take" says Doctor Karl Arthur one of the nation's most controversial scientists that is wearing a a lab coat covered in a mysterious glowing green substance that may or may not moved when you were looking. "@@ NAME @@ has discovered alien life, and intelligent one, too. Although they are in a stone age level, we should try to learn their language first, and then, we should make contact with them. Imagine the things the both species can learn from each other, if you give us more resources, we will be capable to translate their language in a few months. What do you say?"
[Effect]: the only phrase that scientists translated from Europian is "My hovecraft is full of eels"

[Option 2]: "And then what? ", responds Professor Katherine Burham, a scientist who is dressed, casually, in a uniform from the 'Stellar Travels' movies. "What we would learn about these Europians? How to build shelters made of rocks? How to hunt? Let's face it: they are so primitive that they don't have anything useful for us. I propose that we leave them alone in their icy moon and ban any investigation about them, and focus all our efforts in investigate and search useful resources in other moons or asteroids. "
[Effect]: the government is groaning for the fact that they are expending a lot of @@CURRENCY@@ in retiring all the scientific equipments from Europia

[Option 3]:"I think i have an idea" intervenes a scientist who responds like 'Mr. @@ ANIMAL @@', "It is true that , comparing to us , they are a backward species, but, we also has to consider that the Europians are suffering because of the harsh conditions of their moon. Imagine the amount of @@ CURRENCY @@ we can earn with those space octopuses in the slave markets around the world. Ok, I accept that bringing them here would be very expensive, but imagine how many people would want a slave as exotic as their property. Just give the order ".
[Effect]: slaveholders around the world go bankrupt by purchasing slaves who cannot stray too far from water sources.
[Validity]: Nations that are involved in slavery.

[Option 5]: As the meeting continues, Bishop Random Name, a famous pastor of a sect known as 'Get Out Of Us', who has been classified as 'a dangerous fanatic gang' by other denominations, suddenly enters through a window. "The creatures you are talking about aren't real: they are Demons who are there to confuse the minds of the good people and make them fall into sin!!We must take the war against those impious creatures, and destroy that moon! Only then can we save the world from the threat of Satan. "
[Effect]: the War Of The Worlds has begun.

[Option 6]:"I think the problem is that we are treating these creatures as sapient beings" intervenes the famous chef Brandon Bransay, while eating something of dubious origin. "How many people wouldn't want to eat a Europian? The only thing we have to do is make more probes with containment chambers and send them to that moon to capture those octopus aliens so we can cook them. What's the worst that could happen?"
[Effect]: people are spending a lot of time in the bathroom after eating Europian steak.

Interesting premise, though I assume this is the stage (if irl Europa gets there) after the first primordial organisms emerged. I don't know if NS is scientifically-advanced enough to reach that point (I definitely could be wrong as there are issues dealing with AI personhood, orbital weaponry, space navies, and even an Easter egg about aliens), but it

What's the composition of the moon planet? Is it similar to Europa or does it have different characteristics? Also how would there be buildings if these creatures are merely aquatic?

Well, considering that Europa is old enough to have life...well, the Europa-offshot called "Europia" (that it would be in the same solar system as the NS Earth, Ey, we have a "Fido" instead of "Pluto") would be the same.
answering the questions:
1) The same as Europa
2) Similar
3) I was thinking that those would be rock headlands, you know, simple structures octopus-like creatures can build.

Well, it's definitely up to your imagination what those creatures could be. It's definitely a science fiction-oriented issue, so I wonder what the editors would think of this premise since you can wander into sci-fi, but not too far.

So I've been puzzling about this for a while and I've just realised what the problem here is.

It presumes that this is not the first time first contact has been achieved.

Honestly, this description describes what would likely be days, weeks even, of research and observation into these creatures, when the bigger is OMG NAME HAS FOUND ALIENS. Something that hasn't happened yet and (far as I'm aware) hasn't happened in the issueverse yet.

Ironically, many of the options are valid as what happens after, but it's just not written from that POV. This issue would be a gigantic, momentous occasion in human history if it happened- maybe treat it as such first before pondering the uplifting argument?
Conserative Morality wrote:"It's not time yet" is a tactic used by reactionaries in every era. "It's not time for democracy, it's not time for capitalism, it's not time for emancipation." Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

Wait, what? *rereading tthe OP* Oh, i knew i was forgeting something.
You are right: the first reaction of that is going to be "WE FOUND OTHERS, QUICK, CALL THE PRESS". I think i'm going to rewrite the issue to reflect that first reaction. Thanks for the observation.

I think this one might not be workable, in my opinion at least. If only because there is already an existing "first contact" issue, albeit in the form of an Easter egg. And the fact it is an Easter egg and not a "real" issue would indicate to me that Outer Sparta's sentiments are correct. This premise might be too "out there" for a proper issue.
I might be totally off base of course. This is just my hunch.

Assuming this issue is a valid premise, here my general thoughts;

Referencing a specific time period is a no-go as it ignores the vagueness NS strives for. I'd make that a bit more ambiguous. Otherwise the option is decent, but the effect line is a little weak.

[Option 2]: "NOOOOO", responds Professor Katherine Burham, a scientist who is dressed, casually, in a uniform from the StarTrek series "If we do that, we will not be different from the evil imperialists who have plagued our world. We must create a law that prohibits all our intervention in the home world of the Europians at any cost, so they can live in peace and develop as a nation and who knows? maybe one day they will be advanced enough to visit us "
[Effect]: the "prime directive" is preventing scientists from further investigating Europia for fear of contaminating the culture of the Europians.

I don't think you can reference StarTrek directly here, instead maybe choose some wacky NS substitute.

[Option 3]:"Maybe we can reach a compromise" intervenes a scientist who responds like 'Mr. @@ ANIMAL @@', "It is true that interventionism has caused a lot of damage, but we cannot allow thousands of Europians to suffer, so we should give them citizenship to all of them, so we could help them because everyone knows that @@ NAME @@ never abandons her children "
[Effect]: citizenship has reached new heights in @@ NAME @@

The effect line here is pretty good, but the option description is kinda weak.

[Option 4]: "What is all this?" asks the famous slave owner Butin Slavholder, while wearing a shirt that appears to have been taken from a 19th century museum. "Citizenship? Do not intervene ?, listen dear @@ LEADER @@: don't pay attention to these hippies, it's obvious what you have to do: you have to enslave those aliens.

Again, the issue of the time period reference

[Option 5]: As the meeting continues, Bishop Random Name, a famous pastor of a certain religious group who has been classified as 'a dangerous fanatic gang' by other denominations, suddenly enters through a window. "The creatures you are talking about aren't real: they are Demons!!We must take the war against those impious creatures, and destroy that moon! Only then can we save the world from the threat of Satan. "
[Effect]: the War Of The Worlds has begun.

Nice effect line, but again the option description is weak. I would be more specific than "certain religious group", that's the place to be creative.

Interesting (and horrifying) choice. I like this one.

Closing thoughts. This issue is very similar to Issue #129, but with aliens. That might cause some further points against it.

I might be totally off base of course. This is just my hunch.

Assuming this issue is a valid premise, here my general thoughts;

Yeah, i'm trying to make this issue not that far away, so, 'm working how to do it...

Now, after weeks of celebrations and more research of Europia, several people have gathered in your office to discuss what to do with the creatures, which have been called "Europians".

This is a pretty long description. And while it's got some puns in there, I think you could cut out a lot of the extraneous detail.

And that was the effect of trying to make it much closer to home, but yeah, i will try to cut out some details.

Oh, you have a point there, maybe i should writte "@@ NAME @@ has a moral obligation to help them reach the next century". I will try to create a better effect line.

In the issue #129 Star Trek is referenced...

So, this is the contrary of option 1: need a better description.

Good point...i will replace that with "previous century"

True. However, Issue #129 is an old issue (as you can tell by its numbering). Older issues typically don't follow the exact same standards and rules as issues nowadays are expected to meet. As another example Issue #3, makes direct reference to Harry Potter.

For a modern issue, I would advise making up some humorous NS alternative. There's probably already one floating around in the issues list honestly.

Ok, good point.
Edited, to make a little homage to issue 129, or to aknowledge it, i divided option 2 into two categories: the one that only is available if you go with 129.1 and the one that is available if you chose one of the other options. I changed the ST reference and create a religious group, also, i changed all references of centuries.

Ok, after thinking more carefully about the issue, i notice that Krusavich was right: this draft was very similar to issue # 129, so, i decided to change it into a more different issue but maintaining the topic of that issue.
More feedback will be appreciated.
