[DRAFT] Rumble in the Jungle

Postby Rowinest » Tue Jun 29, 2021 6:51 pm

I thought I would take a shot at writing this issue. It's not very great, and I'm somewhat worried that perhaps the outcomes are somewhat identical to that of #808. Feedback on that and the general state of the draft would be appreciated, thanks!

[title] Rumble in the Jungle

[validity] has not chosen options #808.1 or 808.2 (as to not support either Daguo or New Daguo)

[desc] In an explosive turn of events in the Daguo Civil War, Daguo bombers have begun firebombing a strip of jungle on the outskirts of @@NAME@@, contending that the thick forestry shelters part of a system of trails that facilitates insurgent troop and supply movements.

[option 1] "You look as magnificent as ever, @@LEADER@@," wheedles the prickly Daguo ambassador, his smile nearly as thin and long as his moustache. "Surely you see why we had to take this course of action? It simply is not acceptable to allow these animals to continue sabotaging our glorious motherland, using your soil, nonetheless! It is as the rat clings to the mighty ox - do not continue letting these cowards muddle your name. Aid us in rooting out these swine and I promise your @@MAJORINDUSTRY@@ industry will find itself pleasantly surprised come our next trade deal…"
[effect] every citizen is worth their weight in gold

[option 2] A potted plant in the corner of your office suddenly rustles as a camouflaged guerilla warrior with singed eyebrows emerges. "Are you kidding me? Can't you see, @@LEADER@@? This is all those Daguo goons do! They smile and praise you to your face and when you turn your back they go and screw your- uh, screw you!" The soldier pauses and coughs awkwardly, then resumes. "Er- sorry, not you, @@LEADER@@. But, come on - they're literally bombing your land! You've got to join us and fight back against these homewreckers- ah, damn it!"
[effect] when your neighbor’s house is on fire, you let them hide in yours

[option 3] "What. In. The. TARNATION??" screams your Minister of Defense, his eye and finger twitching dangerously. "I knew when I woke up this morning to the smell of SCREAMS that there were ENEMIES in our MIDST. What I did NOT know was that they were so CLOSE! We have to DEFEND ourselves at ALL COSTS, even if it means tearing apart every NOOK and CRANNY. And if you lot don't have the GUTS, I'll do it MYSELF!!!"
[effect] "anything you can do I can do better" is the nation’s official wartime policy

Does @@NAME@@ border Daguo? This might be Eurocentric of me, but I've always thought of it as a far-away place.

Doesn't this make too strong an assumption about your government previously allowing the use of your nation's territory by those anti-Daguo forces?

(includes The Ursine NorthLands) Demonym = Bear[s]; adjective = ‘Urrsish’.
Population = just under 20 million. Economy = only Thriving. Average Life expectancy = c.60 years. If the nation is classified as 'Anarchy' there still is a [strictly limited] national government... and those aren't "biker gangs", they're traditional cross-Clan 'Warrior Societies', generally respected rather than feared.

I suppose I always thought of New Daguo potentially being more of a distant province of Daguo (which could help facilitate the breakoff) but felt it was not really important to the context of the issue as the rebels could simply be utilizing these trails to move supplies from another allied nation that borders you (I believe Maxtopia does, for example, and #808 mentions that "nations around the world [are taking] sides") so that could perhaps be an explanation, albeit somewhat complicated.

So, this premise is based off the Ho Chi Minh trail - in irl I believe that Cambodia maintained a neutral stance in the Vietnam War, though that doesn't necessarily mean they didn't allow for the trail to be utilized. There was something of an assumption that the trail being on the "outskirts" would perhaps mean that it would be mostly overlooked and ignored by your nation, though if that doesn't work out I suppose there are paths I could go with 1. changing the validity to include option 2 of 808 and shifting some of the wording/potential option variants, or 2. switching the issue premise altogether to allow for previous support. It'd be lovely if you could let me know if the explanation suffices, and thanks so much for your comment!

I recognised the reference -- I'm old enough that the Vietnam War was still going on when I was entering my teens and, even though neither American nor S.E. Asian, I was from a family that followed the news -- but even if we ignore the political implications I, like Trotterdam, am definitely unhappy about the geographical ones.

If you really want an to produce an issue harking back to that period's RL events, then how about one (probably treed from the one in which you could recognise Little Daguo's secession, and presumably with the relevant extra 'Validity' limit for the detail that I'm about to suggest) in which you discover that the breakaway nation you support has been funding its operations partly -- and perhaps even with some assistance from elements in your own nation's Intelligence community -- through the international narcotics trade?
