[SUBMITTED] Built To Rule

Postby Daarwyrth » Thu Jun 17, 2021 11:21 am

CURRENT DRAFT:
[Title] Built To Rule

[Validity] Must have AI Personhood, Must have Monarchy, Must allow Biological Reproduction

[Description] The Prince and Princess of the @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ royal family have long been trying to conceive a child of their own, yet the effort never bore any fruit. Thus, it came as a shock to the entire nation when yesterday they presented the newest addition to the royal family: not a child of flesh and bone, but bolts and circuitry.

[Option 1] "Well butter my bum and call me a biscuit!" exclaims Duchess @@RANDOMFEMALENAME@@ von Schwurdlewaffentstein as her powdered wig falls off her head in unison with her bafflement. "And that... wired thing stands near the top of the line of succession? No, I will not have it! The purity of our nobility cannot be besmirched by oil and ensnared by electric wiring! Only those purely of flesh and blood should have the right to inherit crowns, titles, lands and whatever else we have laid our hands on. No exceptions!"

[Effect 1] heart failure has skyrocketed among the elderly nobles refusing pacemakers

[Option 2] "Does it really matter whether someone came into this world by womb or assembly line?" demands famous technocrat Noel Tusk while cradling his child Z-AE-O-VII, which glitches up a burp. "The royal family is fulfilling a crucial role here, as they're normalising the conception of offspring via artificial means! In fact, we should move this child of steel up the line of succession to heir apparent, to truly represent a society where the biological and artificial live hand-in-, hang on, I need to feed my child," upon which he plugs a cord from the child's back into the wall socket.

[Effect 2] the line to the throne has been suspended indefinitely

[Option 3] "By Violet, we had it all wrong with the lizard-people!" screams @@NAME@@'s chief conspiracy theorist Jonny Alexson into a microphone. "It's @@HIS@@ Majesty Skynet the Annihilator that we should have feared all along! This is not a drill, people, this is not a drill! We need to act now, there's not time to waste. Kill all those rusting buckets of bolts trying to steal our great country from us, and enslave those too weak to defend themselves! Cut their cords, hack into their heads, we are at war, people, AT WAR!"

[Effect 3] broombas cower in fear before their oilthirsty owners

Personally I think that this violates the rule that an issue should not decide anything for the leader. And since in many nations the leader IS a member of the Royal pair, deciding for the leader that he/she has a pair and tried to conceive a child is far more than enough to break the rules.

There has already been an issue before where the heir has gone missing, namely issue #1205 "Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow". The fact that there is an heir means that the royal pair has conceived a child, and if @@LEADER@@ is a part of the royal pair, well, then that issue determines that they did in fact conceive a child. The same goes for issue #531 "Lèse Majesté Maladies", which speaks of a Crown Prince. A Crown Prince implies the royal pair had conceived a child. As such, I'd argue there is precedence in the issue base for such premises.

Still, this doesn’t help with deciding for a leader that he/she is okay with having an AI child.

I could argue the same for deciding for a leader that he/she is childless, as in #596: Primogeniture Problems. Besides, the option to dismiss an issue would always be there if it truly disagrees with the way you play your nation.

The further back you go go to find precedents for details in issue drafts, the less valid those precedents are likely to be: Policy has changed, especially since the Issues Editors were installed.

Well, in that case, if I look at my previous drafts on monarchies from about a year ago, where the mentioning of a crown prince or crown princess was not commented on to be a breach of player autonomy, then I assumed mentioning it here would be okay too. Of course, if I am wrong in this assumption, then I hope to be corrected by an editor, and in that case, I will alter the draft premise. Yet if I recall from when I first started drafting issues and made something about a monarchy, I was told that the assumption from the issue's perspective should be that @@LEADER@@ is not the monarch, and to keep it vague. In my opinion, the premise has been written in such a way that @@LEADER@@ could be a part of the royal pair, it's just not explicitly mentioned. The issue options also don't say "your government has to...", which would imply that @@LEADER@@ is not the monarch. So, I hope I approached it correctly.

Once again my limited and misused English vocabulary fails me!
What I meant to say is that a leader might not even want to have a robotic child.

That is if @@LEADER@@ is indeed the monarch. As I said in my previous post, based on previous drafts I made on monarchies I always operated on the idea to not explicitly mentioned that @@LEADER@@ is the monarch, or that @@LEADER@@ isn't. However, if it would be considered a breach of player autonomy, then I can change it. But from my current perspective I think this is okay.

I feel that a minor noble wouldn't have a nationwide impact like this. If a minor noble wants to have an AI child, that would be a very local issue. But the second-in-line to the throne is a different matter, and it has a national impact. And again, making it @@LEADER@@'s brother would assume that @@LEADER@@ is the monarch, which would also be a violation of player autonomy for players that don't play as @@LEADER@@ being the monarch.

Than it needs a validity on nobility, IMO

Alright, after the discussion here and a brief conversation in the Got Issues discord, I have altered the draft and changed "the royal pair" to "Prince @@RANDOMMALENAME@@ and Princess @@RANDOMFEMALENAME@@ of the @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ royal family", which should make it much more ambiguous. I have also altered the option texts accordingly, so I'd love to know what people think of this now :)

EDIT: I've also altered the title from "In Need Of Spare Parts" to "Built To Rule" (as a play on "born to rule"), because the first title drew on the idea of "an heir and a spare", which had to be removed from the issue.

I changed the title of the issue draft, as I found "Bots In The Palace" a little more humorous than "Built To Rule" :)

Fun draft. I personally like the "Built to Rule" title better, but it is of course your draft. I wonder how many nations have both a monarchy and AI personhood. I would remove the @@RANDOMNAME@@s in the description; it would flow better as just the Prince and Princess.

Thank you! I returned to the former title as I feel it was a good one after all. I also removed the name macros :) hopefully it reads a bit better now!
