[DRAFT] A Matter of Income

Postby Sorianora » Fri Mar 05, 2021 4:54 pm

As an avid sports fan myself I have often noticed that athletes will earn several thousand times the amount of money as most citizens, here is the issues I decided to create about this situation.

Recently, renowned football player @@RANDOMNAMEMALE@@ made headlines for his massive five-hundred and forty-four million @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@ contract. This has caused and uprising among the poor people of @@NAME@@, who have called for a reduction in the salary of athletes.

1. League commissioner @@RANDOMNAME@@ storms up to your office, @@HIS@@ face red with fury. “How dare these people challenge our leagues payment of top players! This is an absolute outrage!” @@HE@@ yells as @@HE@@ pushes papers of your desk, “Privately owned sports leagues, like mine, should be allowed to pay our players whatever we want and that’s that! If these people complaining wanted to make 400 million @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@ they should’ve put in the work that our fine athletes have all their lives!” With that @@HE@@ storms out of your office, scaring your young secretary coming in to deliver your coffee.

Outcome: athletes in @@NAME@@ often own whole neighbourhoods of mansions

2. Just then @@RANDOMNAME@@, a volunteer at a local soup kitchen, enters your office and sits in the chair across from you. “@@LEADER@@ how can we pay these athletes such great sums of money when the poor of @@NAME@@ make so little money?” @@HE@@ says, “ I can understand a small salary increase, but five-hundred and forty-four million @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@ is too much for any person to make. You should force these leagues to pay their athletes the same as any other loyal @@DENONYM@@!”

Outcome: famous athletes are often seen at local soup kitchens

3. Your adviser leans across your desk and whispers in your ear, “Ya’ know, these athletes are making more money than even you @@LEADER@@. I suggest you give yourself a raise. Oh, and maybe a raise for all your hardworking government officials?”

Outcome: it is said that the capital building of @@NAME@@ is made of gold

4. 4. Next you receive a call from the famous CEO and founder of world rebound company, Shamazon. “@@LEADER@@,” he says, “I’ve heard there’s been quite a stir over the crazy contracts athletes are making in this country. While I agree with the common folk of @@NAME@@ that the salary of athletes should be reduced. I want to make sure that this won’t eventually extend to the reduction in the salary of businessmen such as myself. You know, the careers of businessmen last a lifetime, while athletes peak after just a decade or so. Bedsides, what’s more important? The businesses building the economy, or some guys kicking a ball around a field?”

Outcome: the big companies of @@NAME@@ have a strong hold over the government

Is unnamed project the name of the issue, or is there no name?

Plus it's @@RANDOMNAMEMALE@@, not @@RANDOMMALENAME@@, and the same is true for random female names. Although I question the use of @@RANDOMNAMEFEMALE@@ in option 2 - why is she a woman? I think you could use @@RANDOMNAME@@ here. Also, remember that when you do use @@RANDOMNAME@@ the gender of the speaker is chosen at random, so you should replace "he" and "she" after that with @@HE@@ (or @@HIS@@ or @@HIM@@). These macros will match up with the preceding "@@RANDOMNAME@@" and automatically change to the correct gender. If I haven't explained that very well let me know and I'll try again haha.

One last quick point, your effect lines shouldn't start with a capital letter or end with a full stop. It's a weird rule but it's just how the submission system works.

The forum by Valentine-Z says it’s @@RANDOMMALENAME@@....

Anyways, I’ve made all the changes suggested. It’s not a surprise to me that I messed up the macros, they’ve always confused me.

Why is this any different to a CEO or an actor earning this much money? Wait, I'll tell you what the difference. Unlike a CEO or an actor, an athlete's carrer is limited to a couple of decades tops, after which, then what? (By the way, there should be a specific option addressing that)
If you're against political parties who support the CCP, then vote against the Australian Labor Party
New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Aardern is so deeply in love with human rights and Muslim lives that she's actively going out of her way to refuse to acknowledge China's persecution of Uyghurs. It's impossible to love human rights & Muslim lives more than that!
Until if and when the Spanish language evolves to allow for gender-neutrality to not be impossible, (which will take at least centuries), the concept of "LatinX" is completely ridiculous

Good point! Should I delete one of them to revolve around this, or create a 4th option?

The issue raises questions on how work should be valued -- very thought provoking. Celebrities and athletes don't really add value other than entertaining people, whereas teachers and nurses are routinely underpaid. I guess you could argue that entertainment is important for wellbeing.

Option 1 -- wouldn't league commissioners be happy with a cap on salaries? Clearly if the government puts a cap on salaries, then they pay less for athletic talents, and the athletes have to just suck it up.

Option 2 -- It's a bit of a weak one. I think you can strengthen this option by talking about how absurd it is that athletes are being paid way more to move balls around compared to people who educate/save lives/etc.

Option 4 -- This comes out of nowhere. Nothing in option 2 states that "CEOs should be affected too".

I think option 4 is kinda pointless. I also think that the person in option 1 should be one of those famous athletes, and not a league commissioner, as that makes more sense, if you ask me.
