[Abandoned] Reparation Proclamation

Postby Electrum » Sun Jan 17, 2021 6:05 am

An issue about slavery reparations.

Issue: Reparation Proclamation

[desc] Former slaves and their descendants are demanding that the government pay reparations as compensation for the suffering that they endured.
[validity] Must have had slavery and then got rid of them

[option] "It's time for new foundations, it's time for reparations!" chants rally leader @@randomname@@, as @@he@@ leads a posse of peaceful protestors. "Years of exploitation and subjugation has created an unequal society where we have become second class citizens. Former slaves and their descendants are disproportionally

The right thing to do is to apologise and to put your money where your mouth is by compensating us for all the ordeals that your country made us go through."
[effect] the country is praised worldwide for preventing colony collapse disorder

[option] "Reparations? After we decided to pull out? Tell @@him@@ @@he@@'s dreaming," says Minister for Penny-Pinching @@randomname@@, who once told you that @@he@@ saves a lot of money each month by forgoing toilet paper. "If you admit any kind of fault or apologise, then that leaves us open to future demands for compensation from all sorts of oppressed groups that we may have crushed over the years. All you need to do to say is that we've already done enough by leaving and that the current government can't be held responsible for the actions of previous governments."
[effect] @@LEADER@@ tells former colonies to just "shake it off"

A short issue about paying reparations. I'm not sure if a third issue is warranted since this seems like a binary yes/no choice, but I am open to suggestions. I had thought about adding another option on giving reparations to all sorts of groups but I think that will require a complicated set of validities.

What are the other two issues about reparations? I assume that this one is different by being about colonies, right?

Looks neat so far! You mention concern that this is a pretty binary issue, so I wonder if there is a way to expand this beyond the binary yes/no. What if for a third option, a Minister for the Interior or something like that suggests recolonizing the colonies?

"Oh, it's such a tragedy!" says your Minister of the Interior as he loudly yet tearlessly weeps. "Clearly, this is all due to our irresponsibility - we NEVER should've abandoned our colonies in the first place! They still need our guiding hand, and we still need our raw materials and imperial glory. @@LEADER@@, we must rebuild the commonwealth and recolonize our former holdings. It's for their own good!"

I think Electrum meant a third option.

As far as related issues go, only #386, #737, and #1390/#1405 mention reparations in a military context. None of these are about colonies. #405, #450, and #1350 deal with colonies, but none of them mention reparations. As an aside, I couldn't see more than 2 options that would lead to "once had a colony but got rid of it", but that doesn't really have any bearing on this issue.

Yes, it does have a bearing, as that needs to be the validity for this draft. Consequence issues need to be linked to the other issue(s) that got rid of colonies.

I just meant that the number of issues this draft links to (or how low/high that number is) doesn't really have a bearing on the draft, not that the whole validity doesn't have a bearing.
That said, of the 3 "colonial aftermath" issues (#405, #450, #1350), I think actually only #1350.5 would provide an avenue to link to this issue as-currently-written.

This issue is really good; effect line two made me gag a bit.
The suggested third option above is quite good as well. Another way to add a third option - if you feel it needed - could be to propose two different types of reparation payments. Basic example:
One: Pay reparations by funding community needs - education, infrastructure, etc.
Two: Pay reparations by directly monetarily compensating each individual citizen.
Three: No reparations.
Seventh(?) time not dead nation.

Hey -- you've got writing skills -- you should be drafting your own issues :P

Thanks for the recommendation. I had considered putting in an option on "why don't we recolonise" - but some of the options that lead to decolonisation point out the massive costs of maintaining a colony, it doesn't seem feasible to add that back in as an option.

Again, thanks for the recommendation but the first two are really similar as to the effect on @@NAME@@'s government.

I think what I'll do is a third option on giving aid with strings attached. Stay tuned for that one.

But how did nation destroy the colony? did they have electricity before they were colonised? if not, how are black outs nation's fault if nation built the former colony's electrical grid to begin with. Are they suggesting that nation did a substandard job building the electrical network? If so, why didn't they upgrade it? How is crumbling infrastructure the fault of the former coloniser?

Usually when colonisers colonise land, they tend to focus the infrastructure on extracting as many resources as they can from those places, often resulting in run-down infrastructure when they leave.

Anyways, I've temporarily abandoned this draft pending a rewrite because I've spotted an overlap with another draft in the pool, and now I would rather work on the idea of reparations for slavery instead.
