Explanations for certain statistics

Postby Obuba » Thu Nov 19, 2020 4:09 pm

I am finding it difficult figuring out what some statistics mean...

For example: Primitiveness; Scary Big Number Scale; Nations were ranked by World Census officials based on the number of natural phenomena attributed to the unknowable will of animal-based spirit gods.

This is currently, as of the time of this post, at -46.37 in my nation. What does this number mean? Does this mean that essentially no natural phenomena is attributed to the unknowable will of animal-based spirit gods? Or does this mean that close to half of it are? How should I interpret this number?

Why this is important is because I desire to use statistics as a direct means of understanding my nation, especially as it develops. With the exception of the population statistic, I plan to use the majority as direct indicators. It would help knowing exactly or approximately what these numbers are supposed to mean.

Questions and discussions about statistics and what they mean and how they are decided by issues outcomes go in the Got Issues? forum. I'll make a request for this thread to be moved there so that some Issue Editors (and other people knowledgeable in stat meanings) can see your question and hopefully answer it.

How you interpret statistics is generally up to you. Some stat descriptions are measured in the literal sense - while others are more vague. In general, they all imply a certain thing (in the case of Primitiveness, that the extent to which locals accredit natural phenomena to some sort of animalistic divinity tells how primitive a nation is). This is not to say that this is necessarily an actual measure, though you certainly could take it that way. Primitiveness to most people is just how primitive your nation is - you could check the World Census Rankings page here to find a relative measurement to the rest of the world, or you could take the literal description and apply that to your nation - just note that those were not all necessarily meant to be realistic (as can be seen in the most literal of descriptions like that of Environmental Beauty, which is "pounds of wildlife per square mile" or something to that effect) so it might be a bit weird to interpret those.

Personally, if there's a stat I don't like I attribute that to the World Census gnomes miscounting or officials using a strange way of measuring (i.e. measuring employment through daily television chat shows when we don't have television in my nation), but you do you ;)
Stay safe, be kind, and have a great day! :)

It would appear your interpretation of the intended meanings is best. Some statistics are obvious in meaning. Lifespan for example. Others are (intentionally it would seem) more ambiguous and thus open to individual interpretation. Ultimately how exactly each ambiguity should be interpreted for my purposes will be up to me to determine.

I am thankful for your response.

The game is intended to be humorous, so a lot of its units - such as the "Scary Big Number Scale" - are named more for comical effect than to represent a really concrete, realistically-measurable value.

All you can really be sure of (assuming that you trust issues to model your stats accurately) is that your nation is more primitive than other nations whose value is less than -46.37, but less primitive than other nations whose value is more than -46.37. You could look at the overall average in the world to try to gauge how good or bad that is.
