[DRAFT] To see or not to see?

Postby Sanghyeok » Mon Sep 28, 2020 3:49 pm

Original Ideal by Jutsa "Issue about facial recognition software, perhaps about whether or not it should be restrained from being worked on too fast."
My interpretation: Facial recognition software being used by Yamason in stores for non-contact payment

Issue name: None yet.
Eligibility: Scientific advancement high, good retail sector.
Background: Yamason, one of the largest companies in @@NATION@@, recently unveiled a new tool for non-contact checkout, which uses facial recognition to track purchases and product history. Now some privacy rights activists and the Yamason CEO are waiting outside your office waiting to give their opinion on this issue.

Option A: "This is ridiculous!" argues privacy activist @@RANDOMNAME@@. "First they took our purchasing history, then tracked every detail of our internet history, and now our faces too? @@LEADER@@, you must lay down strict laws to protect consumers and prevent misuse of this information by Yamason and other large data companies!"
Result: The "recommended for you" section of Zootube is not accurate at all.

Option B: "Oh please" sighs Yamason CEO @@RANDOMNAME@@. "Our data privacy standards are the best out of all competing companies. We might have merged all the competitors last year, but the point still stands. If anything, you should give us laxer regulation, so we can better fill our pockets...em, shopping consumer's baskets!"
Result: Yamason knows citizens of @@NATION@@ better than they do themselves.

Option C: Out of nowhere, your Minister of State Security pops out, wearing their trademark dark cloak. "I do think this technology shouldn't be allowed, at least for private companies. But what do you say we take this facial recognition technology to track dissidents and criminals? It sounds like a great idea to make our country safer."
Result: Mask-wearing is common in @@NATION@@

How does this system work? Does it just snap your face to identify you and then automatically take money from your bank account without asking you for permission? If it did that, privacy wouldn't be my biggest concern.

It snaps your face and then associates it with a shopping cart. Items that you place into your basket are also automatically tagged. This makes checkout extremely fast.

...Why not just build a system that recognizes which items you put in the cart and skip the face thing, then? It's easy enough for shops to build ID tags into their own carts.

I don't know, ask Yamason.

The fictional company in your issue?

Is this actually being used or proposed by real supermarkets, or is it a strawman that you made up for the sole purpose of objecting to it?

Yamason is Amazon, and I believe it was implemented in several test stores.
I don't have an opinion on this right now, it's simply an issue title that Jutsa inspired.

Doesn't really seem to be an issue to me, as facial recognition being linked to shopping involves shoppers consenting to the system -- they'd likely need to have their faces registered and linked to bank account details, for example. If you don't like it, you just don't shop there.

A real life issue of more relevance might be China's using facial recognition tech to allow access into public / state-controlled spaces, like parks and public transport. Saying to someone that they could choose not to use public parks or public transport isn't so robust a counter-position, so the privacy intrusions are much more controversial.

There's possibly a room for an issue about how people in commercialised cultures are voluntarily surrendering their privacy for convenience of shopping and whether thats a problematic trend in society. Of course, that extends way beyond facial recognition shopping...

It's also somewhat covered by #666, probably not enough for unpublishable overlap but enough that it might be worth writing as a chain from 666.1.

There's a simple solution to this. Face masks. Perhaps an option that bans facemasks?
