[SUBMITTED]Plantation Plant

Postby Noahs Second Country » Sun Jun 14, 2020 7:31 pm

I'm aware of a draft out that's similar in function, but otherwise I believe this has not been touched on much. Thanks to Electrum for the NPC nation name, Zwei'i was the initial name I had but z does not exist in Polynesian languages.

[validity]Capitalism

[desc]A small, remote island chain far away from @@NAME@@, known as the Kingdom of Eluai'i, has existed peacefully for decades without any kind of foreign conflict, despite being a berry ripe location for fruit cultivation. However, you've been informed that a group of wealthy @@DENONYMADJECTIVE@@ plantation owners have recently taken over the royal palace, and that they are now asking for Eluai'i to be designated as a part of @@NAME@@.

[option]"@@LEADER@@, this is a grape economic opportunity for us," reads an unsigned letter attached to an assortment of pineapples. "If Eluai'i becomes an official territory of @@NAME@@, we can reap the benefits of a strong tourism industry, full control of the natives, and the perfect climate for growing rare fruits. Plus, restaurant chains are set to make a lot of money, since everyone loves tropical fruit on their pizzas!"

[effect]@@LEADER@@ has been receiving more fruit baskets than ever before

[option]"Those capitalist pigs have no idea what they are doing, taking a country!" roars @@RANDOMNAME@@, your Minister of Defense, crushing a pineapple in @@HIS@@ fists. "This was a dangerous attack that could have provoked a large-scale war! Let the @@DENONYMADJECTIVE@@ forces invade and beat them to a pulp, so that we can use the islands to build a navel base as a vantage point against the East Lebatuckese."

[effect]banana republics tend to be a fruitless pursuit as the military comes in to crush their own regime

[option]"I'm speachless!" jams @@RANDOMNAME@@, jotting down a list of fruit puns. "First you want to exploit the poor natives, now you want to completely destroy them? This is completely unraisinable, and there's only one apeeling solution here: instead of making Eluai'i a territory, fully integrate it into @@NAME@@. Offer all Eluaiians citizenship, and accommodate them with any land currantly not under their control."

[effect]micronations willingly lose their independence in order to become a peach of the @@TYPE@@

[option]"What did Eluai'i do to deserve this?" rasps one of your diplomats, @@RANDOMNAME@@, snacking on anchovy pizza. "Clearly, we cannot have these people representing @@NAME@@ abroad! The days of needless imperialism are long over—you should require everyone leaving the country to have official government permission, in order to prune out second-rate takeover attempts in the future. I don't think anyone will miss the abomination of warm fruit on a pizza."

[effect]many young couples are finding that they cantaloupe by leaving the country

For effect line 3, should it read 'can't elope' or 'cantaloupe'?
Or neither, because the pun is terrible and irrelevant low hanging fruit.

A few word choice suggestions:

A small, remote island chain far away from @@NAME@@, known as the Kingdom of Eluai'i, has existed peacefully for decades without any kind of conflict. However, you've been recently informed that a group of rich private plantation owners have taken over the royal palace, and they are now asking that Eluai'i becomes an official part of @@NAME@@.

"rich" in the second sentence might read better as "wealthy".
"that" before "they" may also read better
"Proposing" instead of "asking" might be better, or "asking that Eluai'i be integrated into @@NAME@@"
"the" before "natives" in option 1?

the perfect climate for growing expensive fruits

"tropical" or "citrus" instead of expensive, seeing as expensive generally doesn't apply directly to fruit. There might be a better way to mention this can reap a profit (they can't be grown in your home nation, rare, etc.) Noticed you already used tropical in the next sentence, so there might be a better way around that.

"Those capitalist pigs have no idea what they are doing with a country!" roars @@RANDOMNAME@@, your Minister of Defense, crushing a pineapple in @@HIS@@ fists. "This was a dangerous attack that could have provoked a nuclear war! Let the @@DENONYM@@ forces invade

The first sentence in option 2 sounds a bit off, not exactly sure what-maybe "how to run a country" might sound better, though the message is changed
maybe "one of the pineapples in @@HIS@@" might relate it to the first option but it doesn't really matter
don't need "the" before @@DEMONYM@@

"This was a dangerous attack that could have provoked a nuclear war!

How could this have provoked a nuclear war? No one appears to be protecting or claiming Eluai'i, nor does it appear to have access to nuclear weapons (you do mention the East Lebatuckese though, so I suppose that might work-though I still don't know if that's very valid. Plus, if he's worried about nuclear war, why suggest invading in the first place? Won't that just spark the nuclear war he's so worried about?)

Like the jokes :p very fun issue, love it!
Stay safe, be kind, and have a great day! :)

I'll make these changes, thanks.

Right. Rare is probably the best word for this situation.

The first sentence in option 2 sounds a bit off, not exactly sure what-maybe "how to run a country" might sound better, though the message is changed
don't need "the" before @@DEMONYM@@

I'm unsure of your second suggestion here - though it appears I should have used @@DENONYMADJECTIVE@@ anyway.

Well, in our present day if a nation went around grabbing random preexisting countries, something tells me that won't go over well. The nuclear war part is exaggerated, but it gets the point across. Naturally, private citizens representing @@NAME@@ taking over countries isn't going to be looked kindly upon by the international community. On the contrary, an official show of force could be much more effective in staking a claim to the area and establishing sovereignty.

Thanks for the feedback!

Oh, I suppose I misread it/might've misinterpreted that I'm not very good at distinguishing between demonym macros, seeing as most of my puppets have the same referral for each category. Sorry about that :p

Noah, to address this I'd recommend changing the description so that it reads as follows:
"However, you've been informed that a group of wealthy @@DENONYMADJECTIVE@@ private plantation owners have recently taken over the royal palace,"

It'll be much clearer why @@NAME@@ is the one taking the islands, and it'll bring the issue closer in line to the IRL history.

Well, no need to include the wrong opinion since that may convince people not to choose an otherwise reasonable option :P

I added to the third option to address this.

Becoming a territory and state offer different benefits, so I have added option 3 to accommodate for this difference. In terms of the RL reference here, Hawai'i was merely a territory for 60 years (and was continuously exploited throughout) prior to becoming a state.

I also added 'beaten to a pulp' and 'navel base' to option 2 because I keep coming up with increasingly forced fruit puns.

but seriously... too much fruit? Please let me know :P

I feel like these puns should be hyphenated to emphasise that they are deliberate. Also, I'm not sure about Eluaiians. Should it be Eluai'ians, or does the demonym have a deliberately different spelling to the name?

I will make this change.

These plantation owners have betrayed @@NAME@@'s trust via their greed in taking over the country. However, this also serves as a valuable strategic location so this allows @@NAME@@ to go in and punish the 'capitalist pigs' while gaining a military advantage over East Lebatuck.

Navel oranges

It's another fruit pun 8)

I feel like these puns should be hyphenated to emphasise that they are deliberate. Also, I'm not sure about Eluaiians. Should it be Eluai'ians, or does the demonym have a deliberately different spelling to the name?

Going to the RL representation, 'Hawaiian' is the correct denonym, since it was a word effectively invented for English speakers, from my understanding.

I will also italicize all of the intentionally misspelled fruit puns and see how that looks, thanks for the input as usual, Sherp.

Yes, though only loosely - there were a lot of factors at play in the Hawai'i annexation/statehood situation so this is just a very abstract summary of the event/possible solutions.

Tentative last call.

Considering most of the issue plays with fruit-related puns, can you also incorporate that in some capacity in the issue's introduction? If not another pun, then just something that links the dilemma to fruit?
