[ISSUE DRAFT] The lost Violetist city

Postby La Xinga » Wed Jun 03, 2020 9:47 am

Co-authored by Melicorium and Minskiev.

THE ISSUE: After two centuries of conspiracies and mysteries, explorer @@RANDOMNAME@@ has found the ancient capital of an ancient Violetist nation in the forests of @@NAME@@, along with piles of jewels in its temple center. Sadly, @@HE@@ did from a cardiac arrest that night after celebrating, and since @@HE@@ has no family, @@DENONYMPLURAL@@ across the nation have been calling for you to intervene on what to do with the jewels.

OPTION 1A: (has Capitalism) "We can make tons of @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@ off of this!" exclaims CEO of @@NAME@@ Mining Ltd., @@RANDOMNAME@@, while staring at the golden @@ANIMAL@@ statue on your desk. "If you would only allow my company and I to dig it up, I- I mean WE could make millions! We should allow people to mine and harvest whatever they want from historical sights! After all, what's worth more, some historical garbage or @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@?"
Result: Companies loot their founders’ birthplaces.

OPTION 1B: (does not have Capitalism) "@@NAME@@ can make tons of @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@ off of this!" exclaims your State Director of Mining, @@RANDOMNAME@@, while staring at the golden @@ANIMAL@@ statue on your desk. "Please, allow us to mine these jewels and give them to the state, we would like to be honor- I mean be very good citizens. While you're at it, allow people to mine and harvest whatever they want from historical sights and bring them to the government for an reward! After all, what's worth more, some historical garbage or @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@?"
Result: People raid government property to give it to the government.

OPTION 2: "Get your hands off of my family heritage!" exclaims @@RANDOMNAME@@, a descendant of the first sacrificial leader of the Order of Violet. "Those jewels are sacred to my dear family and the Violetist community as a whole, preserved from the times of Queen Amethyst Lavendar I! You must give them over to us, or Violet will get her revenge!"
Result: @@NAME@@‘s most used excuse is ‘Because Violet said.’

VALIDITY: Does not have No Immigration.
OPTION 3: "Why can't we just leave the jewels and the ancient capital the way they are?" remarks @@RANDOMNAME@@, your Minister of Tourism. "Where would the money come from? Tourism! Build amusement parks, coffee shops, and restaurants around the area, and let the money roll into our @@TYPE@@!"
Result: The entirety of @@NAME@@ is a tourist attraction.

Why would anyone choose option 1 over option 3? Option 3 will generate significantly more income

@@CURRENCY@@ in Option 1 should be @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@.

If Option 1 is about @@LEADER@@ and his friends getting rich, I'd replace @@NATION@@ with 'we' or something.

Right now, the word 'jewel' feels like a MacGuffin to keep the story alive. I'd rather have a more concrete reason (why these jewels? Which jewels exactly? What makes them important to the Violetists?) to care about this issue, but maybe that's the critic in me speaking.

It's good, but since the first option sounds too capitalist, it should have a variant for socialist nations (like me).

REVISED VERSION BY MELICORIUM

ELIGIBILITY: Must not have the "Atheism" policy, due to #2, and it wouldn't make sense to leave out #2

THE ISSUE: After two centuries, Architect @@RANDOMNAME@@ has found the ancient capital of the Order of Violet in the forests of @@NAME@@, along with piles of jewels in its temple. People have been called to your office to decide what to do.

OPTION 1A: (Only for nations with the Capitalism policy) "We can make tons of @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@ off of this," says CEO of @@NAME@@ Mining Ltd., @@RANDOMNAME1@@, while staring at the your sister's diamond earring. "If you would only allow me and my fellow colleagues to harvest these massive jewels, we could make millions! We should allow people to take whatever they want from historical sights and encourage them to mine and dig for buried treasure. @@NATION@@ can become more rich than ever!"
Result: @@DEMONYM@@ children play pirate all the time.

OPTION 1A: (Only for nations with the Socialism policy) "We can make tons of @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@ off of this," says your State Director of Mining, @@RANDOMNAME1@@, while staring at the your sister's diamond earring. "If you would only allow me and my fellow comrades to harvest these massive jewels, we could make millions! We should allow proletarians to take whatever they want from historical sights and encourage them to make a living off of this treasure. @@NATION@@ can become more productive than ever!"
Result: @@DEMONYM@@ children play pirate all the time.

OPTION 2: "Get your hands off the holy temple jewels!" exclaims @@RANDOMNAME@@, a prominent member of the Order of Violet. "Those jewels are sacred to us Violetists, and you must give them over to us, or Violet will get her revenge!"
Result: The government is retorted and taunted for giving mountains of jewels to Violetists.

OPTION 3A: (Only for nations with the Capitalism policy) "Why can't we leave the jewels and the ancient capital alone?" remarks @@RANDOMNAME@@, your Finance Minister. "We need to open up the area to tourists! Build amusement parks, coffee shops, and restaurants around the area, and let the money roll in!"
Result: The government turns every interesting thing into a tourist attraction.

OPTION 3B: (Only for nations with the Socialism policy) "Why can't we leave the jewels and the ancient capital alone?" remarks @@RANDOMNAME@@, your People's Entertainment Minister. "We need to open up the area to tourists! Build amusement parks, coffee shops, and restaurants around the area, and let the workers have an enjoyable break from labor here!"
Result: The government turns every interesting thing into a tourist attraction.

La xinga wrote:ELIGIBILITY: Must not have the "Atheism" policy, due to #2, and it wouldn't make sense to leave out #2

I think you could probably write #2 as to not exclude atheist nations, actually. If you can cleverly write #2's speaker as being from a foreign country, then the whole validity issue would be resolved.

La xinga wrote:THE ISSUE: After two centuries, explorer @@RANDOMNAME@@ has found the ancient capital of the Order of Violet in the forests of @@NAME@@, along with piles of jewels in its temple. People have been called to your office to decide what to do.

Is there a way to spice this up a little bit? I generally dislike sentences like your second sentence because it really doesn't tell us much. Either spend that time making the narrative stronger or get rid of it. It'd be a pretty short desc if you just got rid of it, so I think you have some room to play around and make it a bit more fun.

La xinga wrote:OPTION 1A: (Only for nations with the Capitalism policy) "We can make tons of @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@ off of this," says CEO of @@NAME@@ Mining Ltd., @@RANDOMNAME@@, while staring at the your sister's diamond earring. So two things I want to talk about here. Firstly, the last sentence seems a bit disjointed from the rest of it. I get what you're trying to do and I think you can get it to work, but it doesn't really logically flow well enough as written. Consider something like:
People should be able to dig and mine wherever they want - historical significance be damned!"

With something like this, you're making it clearer that he's still acting in his own self interest.

The second thing is that your socialist option doesn't really feel like a socialist option. It reads just like the capitalist version with a couple of words changed. That can sometimes work, but the central idea of the option is very capitalist in nature. Either write around it so that there's only one option instead of two, or change the socialist option a bit more so it's less about making money for himself and more for enriching the country as a whole.

La xinga wrote:OPTION 2: "Get your hands off the holy temple jewels!" exclaims @@RANDOMNAME@@, a prominent member of the Order of Violet. "Those jewels are sacred to us Violetists, preserved from the times of dear Violet! You must give them over to us, or Violet will get her revenge!"
Result: The government is retorted and taunted for giving mountains of jewels to Violetists.

So you know how I said you could potentially write around this for athiest nations? I actually think I came up with an idea. Make the speaker claim they're descended from the leaders of ancient Violetists or somehow connected to the lost city, and then have them say "Get your hands off my family's jewels!" Boom, instant publication material from the editors ;) (I'm joking about that last bit of course). Feel free to run with that idea if you like it.

Also, I don't think 'retorted' works quite like that.

This is the kind of issue that really deserves a reference or two to some famous treasure hunters, like maybe Indiana Jones, Nathan Drake, or Lara Croft. I hope that gives you some inspiration :)

The problem here is that you totally skip over the fact that the explorer was assaulted. I’d probably leave that part out, and maybe just say that they had a stroke, or something.

Drasina did say this is valid for Atheist nations too, since it's more of a descendant-of type of thing. And the assaulted part was used to show that there is controversy. Stroke will not signal anyone cares about it, since no people were involved.

And on the immigration call, is tourism included?

Hmm, alright then.

The thing is, there IS no controversy about the explorer being assaulted. They’re not mentioned any other time in the issue. If they had a stroke, then the treasure they found would still be available and you don’t have to include assailants in your issue.

Well, the policy says that foreigners can’t become residents, so assuming tourists aren’t homeless, no.

I edited the DISC in concern to the assault part.

He did from a heart attack?

Also, that kind of seems a little...strangely put. Maybe remove the bit about how he has no family, and possibly add an option from a family member?

Also, the transition from ‘he found treasure’ to ‘he died’ is a little abrupt. Maybe add a ‘Sadly,’ in there.

I mean, yeah, I'll change it to cardiac arrest.

And if he had family, it would be obvious! Give the jewels to the family!

Well, how can somebody have absolutely no family? Immediate family, maybe not, but what about distant?

And it wouldn’t be so obvious, because first, for the family to get there, they’d have to go through the possibly perilous journey that the explorer took.

But what if the government or a private company retrieved it for them? Well, why are there government and private company representatives talking to you about seizing it, then?

And then what about the Violetists? Wouldn’t they try to get it?

It’s not obvious.

I see your point, I do, I think I'll wait for a 3rd party opinion.

I'm not sure this issue premise covers anything that hasn't already been covered by Issue 49. It's essentially just asking the same question: what's the procedure for found historic treasure?

For sure, there's a religious angle here too, but that's not enough to make it unique.
