[SUBMITTED] Planting the Cables

Postby Giovanniland » Sun Apr 05, 2020 6:35 pm

This is an old issue draft I had but never got to post it since I got interested with other things in NS. I remember looking at the issue list and finding nothing too related to this, but that may have changed so please comment if there is an issue too similar to this. May need a better title and grammar since I'm not an English native speaker and I'm not good with puns and such.

Submission:

THE ISSUE: A week of storms in @@NAME@@ has caused many accidents from trees falling on electricity cables, leading to deaths and blackouts across dozens of cities. Questions about the safety of the @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ power grid are now springing up.

1. "The grid is totally fine! The root of the problem is the trees!" shouts conservative politician @@RANDOMNAME@@. "We can't plant them close to the cables, plain and simple! So, before all the treehuggers sprout here and start complaining, let's get rid of the danger. Take down the ones within a distance of the power lines, and we'll be safe!"
Effect: the only trees in @@CAPITAL@@ are family trees

2. "Natural problems require natural solutions," postulates environmentalist Thane Ohs. "What I mean is we have long watched the green spaces of @@NAME@@ black out! These storms wouldn't happen if we didn't cause all the damage nature has suffered. The solution is to plant more trees until our environment is perfectly balanced, as all things should be. We will end climate change, and environmental tragedies will cease, leading our land into an age of peace."
Effect: citizens carry around machetes to whack their way through the dense vegetation cropping up across the @@TYPE@@

3. "Here, let me illuminate this discussion," comments your Minister of Energy, while showing you some blueprints. "The solution is an underground grid. It will save many lives and prevent damaged power lines or houses! All we need is funding for this glorious project, however that can be easily arranged by diverting some money from other ministries. Think about it, @@LEADER@@, we'll be the most powerful country of @@REGION@@!"
Effect: children digging around outside are in for a shocking surprise

Older drafts:
THE ISSUE: Following a week of storms in @@NAME@@, people have reported accidents involving trees and electricity cables, causing deaths and blackouts across many cities. Many citizens are now asking themselves: is @@NAME@@'s power grid safe enough?

1."It's not the power grid's safety, but rather the trees' fault!", shouts @@RANDOMNAME@@, a conservative politician. "I've said so many times that we can't plant trees too close to the electricity cables, but everyone just turned a deaf ear. Although they do help decrease pollution, we could just plant them somewhere else and avoid these catastrophes. Now, get started with cutting all these trees!"
Effect: @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ cities are often mistaken by deserts

2."You can't be serious!", says noted environmentalist @@RANDOMNAME@@, the founder of the Beautiful @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ Cities project. "Look, if we didn't start this project, everyone in @@CAPITAL@@ wouldn't see an inch due to extreme pollution. Trees can sometimes fall during storms, however that's just Mother Nature taking its course, and we shouldn't worry about these accidents. If anything, we should plant more trees!'
Effect: people have a hard time traveling within @@NAME@@ due to the sheer amount of trees

3a. "I've got an idea," says the CEO of the foreign TechnoEnergy company from the United Federation, @@RANDOMNAME@@, while showing you a brand new project. "If you let us revamp the @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ power grid, we'll install underground cables, new energy sources, intelligent electricity meters to record consumption and more! Sure, that means ending socialism, but think of the benefits! We'll turn @@NAME@@ into the technology capital of @@REGION@@ and everyone will be happier."
Effect: there is no more power to the people

3b. We'll turn @@NAME@@ into the technology capital of @@REGION@@ and everyone will be happier."
Effect: there is no more power to the people

4."You know, I wish we could live the old-fashioned way again," speaks @@RANDOMNAME@@, an old farmer. "Back then, we didn't need to worry about all these things. We woke up at sunrise, and went to sleep at sunset. Simple enough: shut down all electricity, and it will be safer to live again."
Effect: the only light in @@NAME@@ is the sunlight

Effect: even the @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ sky is green

3a. "Here, let me illuminate the discussion," comments CEO of the foreign Electric General company from the United Federation @@RANDOMNAME@@, while showing you a project. "Our company will do all the work to power your country. Imagine: an underground grid, modern energy sources, and more! Effect: @@NAME@@ has been dubbed 'the Sunflower Country'

Option 4- as time passes, more and more old people grew up with electricity. Also, how does that work with the midnight sun?

I'm aware of that, but I think some isolated places in the world still have people who don't use electricity. I was thinking of a farmer that still uses pre-1800 farming tools, which is hard to have today but still exists. I made this option as a crazy and unlikely solution like a lot of issues have, but if more people agree I could scrap it.
Also, somewhat related to your comment, I just noticed that the 4th option would interfere with more policies than just No Internet and No Computers. If someone could help me with a complete list, I think it also removes things such as AI Planning, AI Personhood, Vat-Produced Infants, ID Chips, DNA Harvesting, Space Program WMDs and add No Video Games, No Gambling and No Nuclear Power as well - all these policies come to my mind as electricity-related policies. I need more opinions on whether to keep this option or scrap it.

About the midnight sun, since it only happens near the poles, I think we can't assume that a nation is located there or not - that would interfere with player autonomy.

Just a little thing: In option 3a, you reference communism. Nations in this game are never "communist", just socialist, so that's probably worth correcting.

The game editors will decide what policy effects the option brings; you don't need to worry about those. And I personally don't see a problem with this option. :)

1. Yeah I missed that, corrected it now.

2. I didn't know that, actually. I removed the parts that said which policies the option would bring. Thanks!

Interesting suggestion, but personally I had to search what that was. I'm not really sure if I should change the effect line to that...

The trees vs no trees debate here seems out of place to me. I’d think if power lines are up, then the trees near it are going down, I feel.

A debate I can imagine is who is responsible for making sure trees near power lines are cut. For example, an unkempt tree falls on a power line resulting in a fire that burns down lots of homes, and now everyone is pointing fingers about who is responsible.

(Individual citizen vs power company/authority vs government and so on.)

That issue only really assumes that @@NAME@@ has a bit of land in the northern hemisphere, Aussie.

Assuming NAME has a very rare condition that few countries have is a little bit of an autonomy issue, I would think.

Regardless, people with midnight sun lived without electricity the same length as the rest of us, and probably longer because getting power up there would be a pain. People in the arctic circle make do regardless of electricity.

It's arguably a weirder assumption to make the last option accommodate "arctic circle" countries than leaving the option as-is.

That is an interesting part of the conflict in the issue, and issues need conflict. I'm not sure if I should remove it, because 1. It would really break the issue and 2. I don't think the environmentalists are just letting them cut all those trees.

Is this a problem in real life: an abundance of falling trees knocking down too many power lines makes one want to do something about the pesky trees?

Hello. Any more opinions? Regarding Candensia's comment, I made a few edits to the draft to make the first 2 options more related to the actual issue instead of just being a trees vs no trees debate. I kept the debate, but more related to the energy lines.

It'd be a tough edit, mostly because the English is just wrong enough to make it sound disjointed and odd. I'm guessing you're not an English speaker, as the way you write is mostly correct in grammar, but doesn't flow in the way you'd expect from a native.

Stuff like this:

"You know, I wish we could live the old fashioned way again," speaks @@RANDOMNAME@@, an old farmer.

People don't use "speaks" as a synonym for "says" in direct speech. Rather, it's reserved for a passive report of someone speaking. "An old farmer" is grammatically sound, but it's just not an adjective/noun pairing that you'd use to identify or describe someone in this context, primarily because the word "old" could mean aged, or it could mean long-established in farming.

These things are hard to explain, but they're to do with unwritten rules of English. It's like you'd always say "big red inflatable animal" and never "red inflatable big animal".

The whole issue is shot through with oddities like this, and an editor would need to fix all of them. That makes the issue a hard sell, as to make up for that extra workload we'd want to see exceptional creativity and humour.

The topic of trees affecting power cables is entirely valid as an issue idea, but it's also an idea that is pedestrian and mundane enough to demand style and pizzazz in its execution, if we were going to want to publish it.

Right now then, it's basically a question of overall quality.

Fix the English, if you can. Add more humour. Add a sense of story. Show imagination and style.

I look forward to seeing what you can do.

Hello all! I've revamped the issue and published Draft 2. Looking for more suggestions.

Candlewhisper Archive wrote:It'd be a tough edit, mostly because the English is just wrong enough to make it sound disjointed and odd.

Thanks for the opinion. I'm sure I can't write as perfectly as one of you would, but draft 2 should be better. I tried to add some puns, remove unnecessary words and also make the story flow. Hopefully the draft is better now.

That's a vast improvement, good to see you've taken the advice on board.

I suggest getting more community feedback over the next few weeks to tune it up, but its certainly getting there.

Thanks! I will wait for more feedback indeed, because it's also my first issue. I think a month would be good.

3b seems the more logical choice instead of 3a.

Here's an advantage to this. A company like that can modernize the area and make more parks and plant more trees around the area to make it eco-friendly. Even introduce modernize farming into the mix. That would also mean improvement of agriculture for farming businesses to come, food and cuisines, retailing businesses, tourism, and improve transport for exporting and such like a tram. Even build a damn to generate more power and reduce electrical costs. This would also benefit employment as a result. This would also generate a massive amount of income to the economy

The disadvantage however is the old housing and the people that are living in the area. That means the people there will relocate to other areas, or have the option to live in the curent area, but prices of goods will increase for them. They would also have to endure noises from some developing areas that are being built. This would also mean transportation would have to change for them, and they would face stiff competition. And since some of the old farmers might not live up to health standards then there is a likely for them to be met with those regulations if they wish to continue their business, or risk a complete shut down due to poor health standards. There would also be a risk of more people and businesses coming in to the area that would turn a calming farming community into a noisy town

Go 3b as the choice, but change some of the draft involving the old farmer from choice 4 beign faced with this kind of possibility

I see your point, but 3a and 3b are actually the same choice, however 3a is for socialist countries (hence the foreign company) and 3b is for capitalist countries. No nation would get the two choices since it's impossible to be socialist and capitalist at the same time.

Technically it's actually not that impossible if both elements can be used for different sectors. Some sectors can work for Capitalist, and some for Socialists. Different systems can work on different sectors. Socialism would have to be beneficial for the population and what needs they want that's good for them such as health, jobs, and environment, and Capitalism can benefit on businesses like retail, tourism, transport, and such. It depends on which system works best

I feel choice 3 has to be inclusive for both. Offer something that would be beneficial. Because you have one that's for Socialists and one for Capitalists. And it makes no sense that Choice 3 has to mean giving up your position to get that. Would it make more sense for the Capitalist one to involve the United Federation since its based on the US, an the Socialist one for a foreign country such as Asia. For both elements it should be a European one that can do that since they can use both Capitalism and Socialism on different sectors that can benefit

It depends on how you handle this. If you work on both of them. Or you can use an additional choice, like if the United Federation would get the pitch but want tax-cuts, with additional extras as a result. Gonna have to work on something like that

Yes, a country can have some state owned industries while also being a capitalist, but what I mean is that the two policies, Socialism and Capitalism, can't be held together by a nation at the same time. Issues and issue options can use these policies for validity. That way, no nation would have both 3a and 3b as choices. They are essentially the same, but with some changes and the added line for removing socialism, if you're a socialist country.

I think a capitalist country would have their own companies, while in a socialist country there are none of them. That way in option 3a (socialist) a foreign company from the United Federation will offer to modernize the power system in exchange for opening the markets, while in 3b (capitalist) a company still offers to modernize the system but it's not foreign since free trade is allowed. I think it is fine as it is, not sure about adding another option if both will talk about modernizing the power grid.
