Vegetarianism

Postby Croatian empaths » Sun Aug 11, 2019 8:44 am

Vegetarianism is agriculture, so why my agriculture industry dropped from 3500 to -4 while decided to ban meat eating?

Meat is also agriculture. A LOT of agriculture.

The industry is literally called "Beef-Based Agriculture".

I hope you recover from this.

Taking action

This is ridiculous.

I've just started a topic in Technical to request improvement: https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=471495

Not detailed yet, just seeking traction on the principle.

Agriculture is just agriculture now - Sector: Agriculture is not specifically associated with beef, it's just agriculture in general. Historically it was beef-based agriculture, but this was overhauled some time ago.

In terms of why agriculture drops with vegetarianism, it's basically to do with the efficiency of vegetarianism.

Beef provides 1.1 million calories per acre of farming land. Potatoes 17.8 million calories per acre. These are the extremes, but broadly speaking, you need vastly less agriculture to support the dietary needs of a vegetarian nation, so the sector shrinks significantly.

It's an imperfect simulation here in other ways - the change isn't in any way proportional to your population, for example, and like all stat effects its an instantaneous and one-off hit. However, it is absolutely intentional that the sector shrinks when you adopt vegetarianism.

Ah I see. Good answer.
And of course, economic "activity" is almost the opposite of efficiency, so it makes sense that would drop as well.

I will point out however that the overview text and the trend byline still reference beef to describe the category.

That seems fixable.
