[DRAFT] Your Affair With a Secretary

Postby The Marsupial Illuminati » Tue Jun 11, 2019 6:30 pm

[title] Your Affair With a Secretary

[opening] During an international summit meeting of socialist and communist world leaders, the General Secretary of the Socialist Party of East Lebatuck greeted you by embracing you and then suddenly kissing you on the mouth.
[validity] not capitalist

[option] Noticing that you are a bit surprised by his actions, the General Secretary explains himself: "You did not expect me to greet you in the customary communist way? This is how we socialist leaders show our brotherly solidarity with one another. We are locked in an eternal struggle against the ever-present capitalists, but with our comrades by our side, we will always be strong. The socialist fraternal kiss is an impassioned expression of that. It's us against the world, baby."
[fallout]it's not real communism unless there's kissing involved

[option] "We're getting tired of this, Erich," declares the Chairman of Núi Và Sông through his grey-clad translator. "You were seen trying to kiss the Regent of Dàguó today. In our part of the world, we don't do kissing as a greeting. I mean, you even had a make-out session with Dustin Wiseau, the Premier ministre of socialist lite Brancaland. Núi Và Sông is basically state capitalist, so we don't have to attend these 'communist' summits if they're just going to be a gathering of homosexuals. A handshake should suffice as a greeting. Don't you agree, @@LEADER@@?"
[fallout]homosexuals have been labelled the enemy of the people

[option] "Who you calling homosexuals?" calls out ski instructor Dustin Wiseau, also Premier ministre of Brancaland, progressing towards you hand in hand with the Great Leader of Skandilund. "Socialism is all about love and sharing. In terms of economic policy, we may be on the same page, but socially, we are apart. We socialists need not only embrace each other. I think we also need to embrace progressive causes like the LGBTQQIA+ and women's rights movements. Peoplekind needs this."
[fallout]a model worker is one who can name all the words in the full LGBT acronym

[option] "Are we forgetting that this man just kissed you on the mouth?" exclaims your Minister for Good Behavior. "Slap him for this inappropriate behavior!"
[fallout]it is okay to punch communists

Inspired by the socialist fraternal kiss and its most notable instance.

It is, of course, entirely possible that @@LEADER@@ is of the opposite gender from Erich.

The draft was written with this in mind. It says that the other leaders are male, but does not explicitly state that the nation's leader is male. I've removed a sentence in the last option that suggests that the nation's leader may be male.

I've done a similar draft here back in January:
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=458889

Slightly different emphasis of course, but I'd take it as a kindness if you could avoid overlapping as much as practical.

I do not see much of a problem. The emphases of the issues are quite different.

Yep, I agree, it certainly feels distinct in premise. Just making you aware of the risk of overlaps is all.

Is it worth the initial option specifically referring to this as the "socialist fraternal kiss"?

Love the various speaker names here. Good to have more issues that are socialist-specific too. I definitely want to edit this...

If one does not think that their nation's leader being kissed is something that the leader should react to, then when encountering this issue, one should click the button that best reflects that view.

No, you misunderstood. I guess I should have worded it better. Sorry. What I should have asked was why @@LEADER@@ is making such a big deal about a tradition that he should already know about?

Oh, thank you for clarifying. In the issue text, the nation's leader doesn't really say or do anything, so they are not making a big deal about it. Rather, it is the people around the leader who are doing and saying things. The nation's leader is a bit surprised by the full-on mouth-to-mouth kiss, as can be expected, and the General Secretary of the Socialist Party of East Lebatuck just explains his kiss, not necessarily an indication that the nation's leader knows nothing about the tradition. It can be taken as a reminder to the leader, not a transmission of new information. So if the nation's leader does know about the tradition and doesn't want to make a big deal about it, then the first option is a fitting one to choose.

I don't really get what the issue is here, or what effects some of the decisions are meant to have. Option 1 seems to be "status quo, whatever" - ie, the dismiss button. Option 2... there is some phrasing that I have trouble parsing, but it seems like a weird lead in to mass bigotry. The third one, that does have an effect - good. The fourth, I mean... that's not policy. How does slapping a person who kisses you unexpectedly translate to it being ok to punch people for being communist? Especially given that you have to be communist to get the issue? That option text makes a point of being nothing to do with politics, and everything to do with inappropriate conduct, so having the effect be politics based doesn't follow.

In my mind it feels kind of forced, and the homosexual angle feels shoe-horned in. It definitely feels like it's assuming a male leader, regardless of the insert of the make-out session with the PM of Brancaland. Basically, I feel like I would dismiss this not because I don't feel it applies to me, but because I honestly have no idea what most of the positions are advocating, or what I'm supposedly choosing. The issue is "another world leader kissed me." That hasn't affected my nation or my people in any way, so it feels more like a character creator's "choose your sexuality" query, rather than a policy decision.

That the issue is demanding to be edited.

Ain't English ambiguity a marvellous thing? :)

What I mean to say is, let me know when you move this to the Staff folder, as I'll be wanting it straight into my folder.

Multiple effect lines mention homosexuality though, all of the other leaders are male and all but say that the General Secretary is a gay man.

Conserative Morality wrote:"It's not time yet" is a tactic used by reactionaries in every era. "It's not time for democracy, it's not time for capitalism, it's not time for emancipation." Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

Like the premise, but the fact that's its socialist/communist specific confuses me a bit. I would love to see more socialist/communist specific issues, but there has to be a reason for it.
