While I expect such a file would be very large, would you be open to providing database images/exports?

The live database is, as of this moment, approximately 200 megabytes of disk space. My occasional backups where I delete extremely volatile data (data on individual nations, which is outdated within a week at best) and optimize the files to reduce unused space are smaller, but still over 60 megabytes.

According to my ISP, I have a total of 250 megabytes of webspace, of which I'm currently using 33 megabytes, the majority of which is the NationStates site. So I could theoretically fit this in, though I'd need to implement new code about automating the generation of squeezed-down files, and be careful about filesizes growing in the future as the game grows.

However, the HTML files already include like 99% of the publicly-useful data I collect, so this would mean tripling webspace usage in return for making slightly-more-computer-readable databases available for the minority of users who actually have a clue how to use them.

Is there anything specific you want to know that isn't currently available on the HTML site? I might be able to either just run the check for you, or confirm that I simply don't have that data.

The HTML site provides everything I'm looking for - the motivation is primarily to avoid scraping to collect data. It seems like that is likely a preferable solution, rather than asking you to stress over such a niche request, though.

On a regular basis, I download all the issue .html files (in a server-friendly manner, I hope). It is no problem for me, but it does take a while. If you simply provided a zip file containing all the issue .html files that could be downloaded, it would save me a fair amount of elapsed time.

Not a demand or anything, just an "it would be nice" item. And if you would rather keep it slightly cumbersome to download all the files, to encourage people to use the freshest data, I would certainly understand that. I myself am occasionally bitten by data which has changed significantly from when I downloaded it, but I accept that as an occasional penalty for my choice not to work directly from the daily online data.

It's not my server (I just upload my data to my ISP and let them handle the rest), but I seriously doubt it's an issue.

Just keep in mind that the files usually only get updated once every 24 hours, so retrieving them more often than that is pointless. So long as you stick to only grabbing them once every 24 hours, I'm sure the server can handle such a gentle pace - this is a professional webserver, after all.

A simple "wget --recursive --level=1 --no-parent --timestamping --no-host-directories --cut-dirs=2" command should suffice to retrieve the entire site with minimal manual effort. (Disclaimer: I haven't tested this. Why would I?)

Try to avoid doing your download in the actual few minutes after midnight GMT, since that's when the pages are in the process of uploading and there may be a mix of old and new data on the site. The upload currently tends to take around two minutes under normal circumstances, but sometimes there's lag or something.

Issue #1503, which was spoiled here, has never made it into the database. My puppet Cain BZ R08Au v0 has determined the talking point for option 1 is "pregnancy tests are under fire from the government for being marketed only to women". The previously cited spoiler revealed the talking point for option 3 is "a teen dramedy has been taken off air because the main villain is a man". Is this enough info to allow it to get into the database?

Thanks, I think I missed that one because it was edited into an existing post, after I had already read the original. A new page starting only two posts later didn't help either.

I was able to figure out all three effect lines on my own, but I appreciate the confirmation.

You’ll need to be more specific about what you don’t understand. If you are, perhaps someone can explain how it works, but I don’t believe the results will be simplified in any manner (based on current formatting and Trotterdam’s FAQ).

Webroot, the anti-virus program I run, has classified http://www.mwq.dds.nl/ns/results/ as a malicious and dangerous site. I am reasonably sure this is nonsense, but thought you would want to know.

The new entry for issue #1511 is incorrect. The actual talking point for option 1 is "@@LEADER@@'s perky ego is the talk of the town", as determined by my puppet Cain B A-Cp v0.

Your guess is as good as mine?

Most of them are intuitively obvious if you look at them (if not from the name alone, then from the fact that score-based notabilities are typically modified by far more issues than flag-based ones), but I don't have any automated, foolproof way of identifying them.

When I can tell you is that it seems that most notabilities are either score-based ("barren, inhospitable landscape"), or are redundant with named policies ("zero percent divorce rate" = "Permanent Marriage"), so it's more interesting to list the ones that aren't. These appear to include:
avant-garde cinema (ban on sequels)
aversion to nipples (not the same as general-purpose Prudism, but rather a ban on public breastfeeding)
conspicuous electricity pylons (importing electricity from other nations)
daily referendums (self-explanatory)
digital currency (self-explanatory)
flagrant waste-dumping (dumping waste in international waters)
free-roaming dinosaurs (mostly self-explanatory, but actually includes all nations with live dinosaurs, even ones in zoos)
otherworldly petting zoo (specifically means dinosaur zoos, and so always implies the previous notable as well)
infamous sell-swords (mostly for nations that employ mercenaries, but may also include ones that merely allow them to operate)
pith helmet sales (counterintuitively, this is actually specific to nations that practice colonialism... or self-defense in Brasilistan's case)
rampant corporate plagiarism (absence of copyright law)
rum-swilling pirates (piracy is legal... the naval kind, not the copyright kind)
teetotalling pirates (replaces the above in nations where alcohol is banned)
smutty television (currently affected by very few issues, I'd have to run some checks to see if that's a sampling bias or not)
unlimited-speed roads (self-explanatory)
That appears to be 15 out of 61 total notables, or about one-quarter. Knowing about these is useful because they're valid validities for issues!

Of the ones that are score-based, I'd have to say that "exploding hoverboards" deserves particular notice.

Minoa wrote:EXTRA: I'd like to see you compile a full list of admirables too, to go with the notables.
I'm probably not going to do this, because from what I can tell, all admirables are score-based.

For example, mine are "cultured" (high Culture), "efficient" (not sure what it means, but clearly something that should be on a sliding scale - maybe Economic Efficiency?), "environmentally stunning" (high Environmental Beauty), "genial" (gotta look that one up in a dictionary... looks like it's Cheerfulness or Compassion?), "safe" (high Safety), and "socially progressive" (high Inclusiveness, probably).

If you want to know which score the less-obvious ones are based on, then that requires statistical analysis of nations rather than issue results, which is more up Valentine Z's alley. Or write your own script.

U get smutty television when adult content is screened in T.V regardless of hours. ( not late in night but instead at any random time)

Okay, thanks, that makes more sense.

If possible, the option I really want to test next is option 7 ("Nah, I’m good.").

I think I can tell what it has to be from process of elimination, but it doesn't make any sense to me.

I've confirmed the talking point for option 7, or rather my puppet Cain EH v1 has. Intuitively, this description makes sense to me, but I'm at a loss for words to explain that intuition.

The talking point for option 2 of issue #1513 (currently absent from the database) is "the Treasury has been accused of flushing money down the toilet". Sorry about that.

Your website is extremely useful for my decision-making. Thank you so much!

I am currently encountering Issue #190: Immigrants Import Homeland Rivalries, and it has 4 options instead of the 5 listed here: http://www.mwq.dds.nl/ns/results/190.html. I suggest you also add the dialogues too to avoid confusion.

The debate/dialogue options are as follows:
1. “Foreigners are a major cause of civil disturbances,” begins Shigeru Erso, whose opinions form the book ‘101 Arguments FOR Slavery’. “What we should do is make all immigrants, foreigners, and non-native Lofia folks slaves! I mean, who in Lofia wouldn’t like a minority slave group to do his bidding? Imagine! People could be bought and sold over the Internet!”

2. “I am shocked and appalled at what my colleague is suggesting!” exclaims Apu Maldonado, President of the Civil Rights Union of Lofia. “Slavery? We should punish these offenders, yes, but send them to rehabilitation centres instead! As for the ethnic squabbles, programs in school should begin to stop these racist attitudes in childhood! All it will take is some slight fortification to the education budget!”

3. A quiet old man stands up to speak. “Now, I may be a quiet old man, but I believe that these ethnic disputes are none of the government’s business. It’s not our war anyway, so it’s not our problem. I’m sure if you leave it alone, it’ll work itself out. Just think of the money that would be saved if the police didn’t have to be paid to deal with this!”

4. “It’s not our war? It’s not our war?” cries (in)famous Lofia-born fascist Emma Siskel. “Well maybe it’s time it became our war! Lofia should take a more active, and by ‘active’ I mean ‘hostile’, role in international politics! This ethnic squabbling will be over when the war is over, and WE can end that war and purge the impure! @@SLOGAN@@! Sieg @@NAME@@!”

Edit: I just found out that https://nsindex.net/wiki/NationStates_Issue_No._190 listed the first 2 options as #1a and #1b. Seems like they differentiate due to whether having a Slavery policy. I don't know how accurate is NSIndex data, but if it is, you could either adjust the option numbers or add the dialogues as I suggested.
