Here's something funny: for issue 902, legalizing murder boosts scientific advancement, but teaching the police how to use computers doesn't.

Well yeah. In the former case, you're encouraging everyone to use computers more, not just the police ;)

Everyone who wants someone dead, anyway.

New feature: all effect lines on one page.

This is mainly useful to search which issue a particular effect line is from.

The format for this list closely resembles the text file I had been using for years to track effect lines before I wrote this program, only HTMLified for links, and a little more rigid because it's produced by an automated program that's less tolerant of ad-hoc margin notes than a manually-updated file.

So, looking at these numbers (comparing the maximum change, mean change, and number of data points), it appears that the option has been seen having a nonzero effect exactly once.

This is extremely unlikely to be due to the option actually having an effect under certain rare conditions. Unfortunately, the alternative, that bad data somehow slipped through my safeguards, is really frustrating. I've tried very carefully to check for all possible causes of unreliable data (except for one, which is impossible to detect, but also really rare), but if there's a mistake somewhere anyway, it's going to be nearly impossible to catch.

The only effect that option has is to unlock the fields, and that has been true of that option since the beginning. So yeah, must be a data collection bug.

Well, I have no idea where to start looking for a bug that only appears once in 1851 times.

I'll just manually clear the data.

So why does it always confirm data for all 1851 times, if it has only shown results one time? Shouldn't it show more of common increase/decrease of values out of 1851?

Ex: Nudity registers changes only 79 times out of 1851; not all nations get the listed stat changes. However, issues involving only compassion changes/little of anything else still shows more.

If I confused you, all I'm asking is if the extra stat confirmation intentional.

It confirmed data 1851 times. 1850 of those times, the data it confirmed was zero.

That's because the report didn't include it, and nobody's ever posted a correction since. However, it so happens that actually got that issue on a puppet myself recently, and though I didn't notice the discrepancy at the time, I now looked back and confirmed that there is indeed a question mark there. So, fixed. (In my local database - ETA a bit over three hours until the next upload to the public site.) Thanks.

Hi, I think it would be nice to have each statistical change in a “div” container or something, so that I can write a userscript to track the census targets for my main nation by highlighting the target categories.

Example HTML code:
Code: Select all
<div id="01">-2.23 to +2.23 Economy (mean -0.8159)</div>
<div id="04">-132.63 to -0 Wealth Gaps (mean -1.5526)</div>
etc …

You can do that already by identifying them by name rather than ID?

It'd be slightly more complicated, but I'm wary of adding explicit "computer-readable" features to the site because I want to leave open the possibility of altering the formatting details at any time as it gets upgraded.

Still, shouldn't be hard, so I'll put it into consideration. A bit lazy right now though.

That's not actually good HTML :) id= is a defined HTML attribute, and is supposed to be unique within a document. So I'd have to call it something else.

I think I am having a really bad day with coding. I've tried looking around for tutorials about adding a “div” tags after “td”, and replacing “br” with the closing and opening “div” tags, but all the tutorials I find on the web so far are totally vague and unhelpful.

I could have been more straightforward with my example code, though.

Code: Select all
<td>
   <div>+0 to +0.66 Civil Rights (mean +0.0017)</div>
   <div>-0.66 to -0 Social Conservatism (mean -0.0017)</div>
   <div>+0 to +0.14 Intelligence (mean +0.0004)</div>
   <div>-0.18 to -0 Ignorance (mean -0.0005)</div>
   <div>-0.22 to -0 Ideological Radicality (mean -0.0006)</div>
   <div>-22.02 to -0 Authoritarianism (mean -0.0553)</div>
   <div>+0 to +0.4 Tourism (mean +0.0010)</div>
   <div>unlocks @@CAPITAL@@ field</div>
</td>

Yeah, I know how HTML works. I'm fairly sure using <div> tags for every line should give the same effect as separating them with <br>.

Are you saying that, for your script, it's important for each individual line to be in its own <div> tag, but it's not important to have the id mentioned anywhere?

I'm sorry, I think I really slipped up with my scripting this evening. I think I should take a break from that and then try again later. :(

For the record, this is what I got so far:

Code: Select all
var allElements, thisElement;

allElements = document.evaluate('//td',document,null,XPathResult.UNORDERED_NODE_SNAPSHOT_TYPE,null);

for (var i = 0; i < allElements.snapshotLength; i++) {
    thisElement = allElements.snapshotItem(i);
 // Highlight positive targets
    if(thisElement.innerHTML.search(/(Environmental Beauty) \(mean +/i)>=0) {thisElement.style.color="darkgreen";}
    if(thisElement.innerHTML.search(/(Environmental Beauty) \(mean -/i)>=0) {thisElement.style.color="red";}
}

Okay, that makes sense. The thisElement thing you're doing does assume <div> (or whatever) tags. I'm sure it's possible to write the script to create them where necessary if they didn't exist before, but it would be more complicated.

So, I caught nonzero data on #241 1 again.

+0 to +0.66 Civil Rights (mean +0.0010)
-0.66 to -0 Social Conservatism (mean -0.0010)
+0 to +0.14 Intelligence (mean +0.0002)
-0.18 to -0 Ignorance (mean -0.0003)
-0.22 to -0 Ideological Radicality (mean -0.0003)
-22.02 to -0 Authoritarianism (mean -0.0340)
+0 to +0.4 Tourism (mean +0.0006)
647
647
647
647

So it's not just a one-off fluke, even though it's still very rare. That makes 2 instances of nonzero data within 2498 data points. Wish I knew what's causing it.

However, this is just #241. #242 1 is still reported as never causing any changes despite 1147 data points.

Well, purged again.

It sounds like maybe there is a glitch that causes stat changes in one in every 2000 people.

Trot, do you have any idea what kind of insane "logic" might result in athoritatianism increasing when I legalized white-collar collective bargaining?
347.3 and 571.1 are examples of the CORRECT way to handle authoritarianism: it should decrease or stay the same every time government stays out of something, regardless of what individuals do to each other.

It helps to say what issue you're talking about. This time, I was able to look at your recent legislation history and I think you mean #76 option 2, but in the future, you should really specify.

According to my data, this option increases Civil Rights, may either increase or decrease Economic Freedom depending on your preexisting state, and does not affect Political Freedom. This will usually cause a net reduction in Authoritarianism, but can increase it in certain circumstances.

I believe that the reason for the inconsistent effect on Economic Freedom is that this issue balances the rights of employees (to form unions and strike for better pay) with the rights of employers (to hire who they want and fire greedy people demanding raises). Presumably, your nation already heavily favored employee rights, so you were just making things harder on employers without really being able to help employees much more.

But legalizing collective bargaining doesn't infringe on the right of employers to fire people :/
