[ACCEPTED] Hacked Out

Postby Singapore no2 » Sun Nov 19, 2017 1:40 am

[desc] For a time now, rumours of citizens spontaneously exploding have swept the nation. You originally believed it to be an urban myth, but you soon realised that it was no hoax after a health official randomly blew up during a conference. As you were about to retreat to a secure state bunker hidden deep underground, the Minister of Information revealed the truth to you. It turns out that the subcutaneous id-chips implanted in @@DENONYM@@s easily overheat, and have a tendency to explode.

[validity] Only valid for nations with subcutaneous id-chips

[option] "It seems that I failed to disclose the risks inherent in these chips," admits @@RANDOMNAME@@, the Minister of Information, who is examining a blueprint for the device. "While it may be tempting to do away with them, you must remember the purposes that they serve. These chips help to monitor our citizens, store health metadata and simplify bureaucratic processes, saving time and resources. We'll just have to try to find a solution for the problem and hope that no more incidents happen in the meantime."
[effect] @@DENONYM@@s are deemed safety hazards internationally due to their tendency to randomly explode

[option] "This cannot continue!" exclaims @@RANDOMNAME@@, the Health Sectretary, still shell-shocked by the horrifying death of the official from before. "I was already against implanting electronic parts into our citizens for no good reason, but putting their lives on the line as well is going too far. We must remove all of these hazardous chips before any more lives are needlessly lost!"
[effect] criminals rejoyce as the government can no longer track their illicit activities

[option] "So you're telling me that these chips explode when they overheat," inquires @@RANDOMNAME@@, the Chief of Police, morbidly interested in the potential of this development. "There are many criminals still at large in our country, and they're always one step ahead of us. If we were to damage their chips by overloading them with data, we would be able to injure the criminals remotely, drastically improving our chances of detaining them successfully. And if there's nothing left to arrest... then justice has been served, amirite?"
[effect] serial jaywalkers suddenly blow up for no conceivable reason

[desc] An unexpected issue presented itself today: You are locked out of your office and can't get to work. It turns out that someone had hacked your subcutaneous id-chip without your knowledge, altering the code, thus causing it to malfunction.

[validity] Only valid for nations with subcutaneous id-chips

[option] "That's quite annoying," states @@RANDOMNAME@@, an elderly official, prodding your locked door with @@HIS@@ walking stick. "You know, all of these electronic gadgets can be easily compromised. Hackers could impersonate you by copying your data and find out your weaknesses with just a quick scan. If you want to prevent such incidents from happening again, you'll have to get rid of these id-chips and replace them with plastic cards or other forms of traditional data storage."
[effect] citizens require at least a dozen different cards for everyday use

[option] "It seems like you're in a spot," remarks @@RANDOMNAME@@, the Minister of Information, furiously typing on a laptop. "I've personally experienced my own id-chip getting hacked as well. While it may be tempting to do away with them, you must remember the purposes that they serve. These chips help to monitor our citizens, store health metadata and simplify bureaucratic processes, saving time and resources. We'll just have to encrypt them further and hope for the best."
[effect] @@DENONYM@@ are regularly victims of identity theft

Honestly from what I could tell from the issue that grants this, it sorta includes and at the same time excludes leadership. As it never technically clarifies leadership as being affected, only the citizenry. However, I do like the issue. It seems very interesting.

Edited In: As for title, I like it. However, i think "Hacked out" is a good pun on the issue due to having to do with Hacking an ID-chip. Just my opinion.

If you pick 666.4, where it is being covertly inserted, it'd be very odd for Leader to have the chip, and odd for it to be keyed to opening an office door, and odd for it to be known about for hacking.

I realise the set-up of 666 (where the same policy is activated for covert spy-chips and for openly adopted shopping-chips) makes it hard to create reversal premises and I appreciate the effort. However, I don't think this one fits prior narratives.

I'm thinking if we need an issue that works on commonalities between the two narratives then it needs to be something about hardware backfiring. Maybe people are spontaneously exploding, and they don't know why, but your techs realise its an interaction between the ID chips and something or other.

The ID chips well in the above mentioned one, is to keep people from basically doing things they ought not to do. However, your idea is pretty good. However, it is mainly to secure and keep the populace compliant.

On a more important note, is there an alternative title that I can use?

I don't think we could, but I think we could maybe work in the fact of "exploding money" from an issue having Id chips in money to track currency as well. So these chips may not only be in the citizens. However, I would think it would need a change in target then to target users with ID chips in general.

Edited in: Though that would be funny, people missing limbs from money exploding and not to mention the banks.
Added In: I got something in mind, like instead of attempting to hack something that has more security. It would make sense for them to target the next best thing as a result. The money, if the person has ID chips in them. :ugeek:

Explosive ID? ID Fix This? Chip in the Design?
Also, as for referencing the exploding phones, maybe have a third option where some safety-obsessed person complains about how not only ID chips explode but other such objects, with the person in question also listing exploding phones as one of the exploding objects?

Is adding an option where the secret police consider using the explosion to dispose of criminals suitable? Or would it detract too much from the issue?

This is looking good. I'm sure I'll amend more when I publish it, which I intend to, given it closes a policy-reversal gap in a solid way. However you should feel free to submit when you feel it is ready. Drop me a TG when you do, so I can add it directly to my folder.
