[DRAFT] The Ship Has Sailed

Postby The Atlae Isles » Wed Aug 16, 2017 5:29 pm

Another crack at an issue! :) Saw this in the news and said, hey, why not?
Description: Rising numbers of accidents have happened at @@NAME@@'s shipyards. This report was initially shrugged off until a tour of the Glorious @@LEADER@@ shipyard almost turned deadly when a beam fell from the roof and almost hit you. After ruling out terrorism and an asassination, the issue comes up for what to do with the crumbling shipyards in @@NAME@@'s ports.

Validity: only valid for dictatorships

[option]"Can't you see what this means, @@LEADER@@?" inquires one of your nation's top generals from the shadow of a nearby crane. "Clearly these civilians don't know how to run a shipyard. We need to instill some order like we have in the military. In fact," @@HE@@ adds, looking around at all the dangerous equipment, "you should have the military run these. We needed more naval units anyway."
[effect]every cargo transport is escorted by a fleet of destroyers

[option]"No!" screams @@RANDOMNAME@@, your chief economic officer as spittle flies from his mouth in your direction. "Vat is de use of trade and fancy ships, anyvay? Clearly it veakens us to sanctions and negotiations! Ve have to rely on our own things; our own food, our own cars, our own doomsday-I mean, tanks! It is most patriotic. Leave de shipyards to rot and ve shall prosper!" @@HE@@ then collapses in a bout of cackling.
[effect]shipyards that are not converted into factories eventually rot into farmland

[option]"On the contrary," exclaims @@RANDOMNAME@@, the owner of Magnificent and Absolutely Awesome @@TYPE@@ shipyard, stepping out from behind the pillar that was suspiciously under where the offending beam was, "shipyards are great! Our enemies shall tremble in fear at our big and shiny boats! If anything, we must pour more money into shipyards. We shall make @@NAME@@ the envy of @@REGION@@, and the money will go splendidly in my pock-I mean struts. Yeah, definitely struts."
[effect]it is the dream of every child laborer in the mines to one day work in the shipyards

[option]"I beg for apologies and mercy," pleads @@RANDOMNAME@@ , the operating officer of the shipyard. "I am not worthy of my job, and it would be an honor for you to separate my head from my body That said-" @@HE@@ changes the subject abruptly "we have to have somewhere to store people like me. And I give to you my shipyard! A falling beam might even kill a political prisoner or two. And considering that I said that to you, how 'bout you let me off?"
[effect]the dystopian novel "The Shipyard" is widely circulated throughout @@REGION@@

I didn't intend to make it dictatorships only, but I think it's better that way :P

You'd have to assume that shipyards are government owned

"Assassination", and remove the "for".

The Atlae Isles wrote:Validity: only valid for dictatorships
Woo! Not sure yet why this is a dictatorship issue, but it's nice to have more of those.

The Atlae Isles wrote:[option]"Can't you see what this means, @@LEADER@@?" inquires one of your nation's top generals from the shadow of a nearby crane. Note that you didn't use a randomname macro, so the @@HE@@ won't be initialized. It'll probably still be a random gender based on the previous issue that the game engine processed, but I'm not sure if that's what you want.

The Atlae Isles wrote:[option]"No!" screams @@RANDOMNAME@@, your chief economic officer as spittle flies from his mouth in your direction.
Eww.

Err, I mean, this time's the opposite, you're using a randomname macro but a fixed gender. Either you need @@RANDOMMALENAME@@, or @@HE/SHE@@ (I assume the latter, since there's no reason for this character to be a particular gender).

Also, you need a comma between "officer" and "as".

The Atlae Isles wrote:the pillar that was suspiciously under where the offending beam was
...what?

The Atlae Isles wrote:[effect]it is the dream of every child laborer in the mines to one day work in the shipyards
Err, who says I have child labor? (Or mines, for that matter.) You can't assume that just because it's a dictatorship. They're separate flags.

For that matter, you can't assume to government would be totally indifferent to numerous people suffering accidents until @@LEADER@@ is one of them. But that stuck out less because you need some kind of story for how the issue was brought to government attention.

The Atlae Isles wrote:[option]"I beg for apologies and mercy," pleads @@RANDOMNAME@@ , the operating officer of the shipyard. "I am not worthy of my job, and it would be an honor for you to separate my head from my body That said-" @@HE@@ changes the subject abruptly "we have to have somewhere to store people like me. You have a space that shouldn't be there between the name macro and the comma, and you're missing a period after "body".

I don't understand what you mean with "store people like me". I guess you mean political prisoners? But (A) if you're just executing them, like he suggests, then you don't need much place to store them, and (B) considering that he was just negligent I didn't immediately make the connection between him and actual political enemies, particularly since he then immediately tries to convince you to let him go.
