[DRAFT] An Unsolvable Mixup

Postby New Dukaine » Mon Feb 20, 2017 8:30 am

Tagging an issue editor, please take a look :)

Title: An unsolvable mixup.

Dilemma: Every year, @@NATION@@ holds the @@DEMONYM@@ national championships for Rubalik's cube solvers, a puzzle that is solved competitively. Usually, the board committee that hosts these competitions places the competition near @@CAPITAL@@ or another nearby city, instead, they decided to place it far away, near the border of Maxtopia, which is a relatively unstable area of the country. Solvers are now outraged, and want you to take action.

Validity: None, but possibly high crime (opinions on this?)

[option]"Why near the border?" questions famous solver Felix Zremdegs, a world record holder. "We know that area houses drug cartels, terrorists, and street-side robbers! This is insane!" He then smashes a cube on your desk, as pieces of your delicate Maxtopian china fly out the window. "You got to order it to move back here! We might have to move the date and sacrifice a good venue, but it's for the sake of our citizens!
[effect]Whenever Nationals are placed outside of @@CAPITAL@@, they usually get delayed until the year after.

[option] "We have hosted here too long though!" exclaims @@RANDOMNAME@@, a committee member. "Lets give this idea a chance, keep it there! It would be good for our friends near the border that can't drive to @@CAPITAL@@ for the competition. Terrorists? Bah! A little security with tons of weapons can deter them!"
[effect]The National Rubalik's Cube Competitions are regularly interrupted by cowboys charging into the building.

[option]"Why should we even host this cubical nonsense?" says @@RANDOMNAME@@, a person who doesn't know or care how to solve a Rubalik's Cube. "It's just a twisty thing. Who even cares about twisty things that turn and you mix up and you can't....ARGH!" He then grabs a cube off your desk and throws it out of your window. "If you can't decide, don't even try. There might be some pouty kids and adults out there, but it'll be for the best.
[effect] Dozens of protests have erupted over @NAME@ after the order to cancel the Rubalik's Cube competitions

First issue in a while, after the 3 I submitted 9 months ago got denied. I wanted to come up with an original idea. This issue is based off of a dilemma of the World Championships being placed in Paris, which caused some backlash. Thoughts on improvement?

1. Typo
2. Made option 2 more clear
3.All problems in this post fixed.
4. Capital is no longer in the east, switched city from west to near Maxtopian border
5. Minor word change in first option, issue editor tagged to take a look

Suggestion: try to make what exactly the option does (keep it out, bring it in) more clear - I was a little confused. :)

Alright. I personally think options 1 and 3 are clear, so i buffed up option 2. Is it better now?

I don't see why this warrants government attention.

Maybe it is funded by the respective government that holds the tournament, but then they accidentally placed the tournament somewhere far away.

competitively.. Usually,

Only one period at the end of a sentence.

He then smashes a cube on your desk out the window.

"He then smashes a cube on your desk, as pieces of your delicate Maxtopian china fly out the window."

[effect]Every second of Nationals is equivalent to 2 gunshots outside.

"Why even host?" says

"Why should we even host this cubical nonsense?" says

Why would you assume that west of @@NAME@@ is more remote than the east? And why would you assume that @@CAPITAL@@ is in the east?

Looks pretty good now, I have but one minor complaint:

This is frivolous!

"frivolous" refers to something overly fancy. A more appropriate word should mean overly rash or dangerous, as it's in an unstable area. Perhaps you could choose "insane", "or "unsafe""?

I completely agree! I should change that and should probably tag an issue editor to take a look here on this draft.

EDIT: Done! How does it look now?

EDIT 2: 900th post too.

So let's start at the core. This is a weak description.

First of all, it waffles interminably. Try to present the information more concisely and clearly.

Secondly, it doesn't feel like this is an issue for @@LEADER@@ - we need an explanation why this is a concern of your government.

Thirdly, it assumes too much, such as a border with Maxtopia, areas of instability within @@NAME@@.

Before I do edit this because I am about to go to school.

1. Would I add a bit more adjectives and detail to polish it up or just add more information?

2. Should I add something in that the competition is so large it is government sponsored?

3. How should I fix it? Just put "an unstable area of the country,"not assuming any location?

Thanks for the look

Less adding, more subtraction I think.

If I were going to slice it up in the editing room I'd do something like this:

The annual International Rubik's Cube Race is due to be hosted in @@CAPITAL@@ this year. However, controversy abounds, as...

...and then you need an issue that has arisen. A proper issue. Not just that the location is changing and that solvers are upset by it, because that's nothing to do with the player's NS government. Rather, you need something dramatic and interesting to have happened that involves the nation as a whole and demands government attention. For example:

...it turns out that last year's champion is a wanted criminal in @@NAME@@, and you know that he has announced his intention to visit. A lack of extradition treaties with his home nation has made it hard for you to get at him... until now.

...a sentient AI wants to compete, and between his greater processing power and custom-built mechanical hands he can complete a Rubik's cube in less time than a human player can turn a single move.

...intel says that one of the competitors is in fact a Maxtopian spy, code-named LATO-ROTI-ROTA, who is using the competition as an excuse to make contact with secret operatives deep within your nation.

Basically, find the story.

Don't just use one of the ones above, unless you really really want to: better if you find the heart of the story yourself. Use the Rubik's competition as a fun framing environment for an actual issue, and use those trappings to create the humour and fun, but don't think that in itself a question of where to hold a Rubik's tournament makes for a whole issue.

Clarification: The sport is called speedcubing. Also, there is more than one WCA competitive cube. Here is a link to the competition types and records: https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/re ... egions.php
As for the actual description, it needs some clearing up.

[effect]Whenever Nationals are placed outside of @@CAPITAL@@, they usually get delayed until the year after.

I'd like to note that most good cubers do not come from the same country. Also, you are wildly misrepresenting Felix Zemdegs. He isn't just a wr holder... he has at least 4 or 5 current records. He is a f*cking legend, IMO. Also, he would never smash a cube, most of the ones he has a prototypes worth hundreds of dollars...

This is just plain hard to read. Also, note @@RANDOMNAME@@ as a WCA committee member, otherwise you could put this person in essentially any context.

Speedcubing competitions are international. The only change that would occur from this option is that @@NAME@@ would not host any competitions.

I'll help you change the actual wording so the issue reads better if you would like help. Speedcubing is one of my (many) passions, and the setup of this issue will kind of annoy me if I get this and cubing is so misrepresented. One further note... not all cubes are actually cubes. The most well known non cubed shaped cube is the Pyramix, btw.

Alright. It just reads like the only competition is who can solve a 3x3 the fastest.

On an unrelated note, what are your best solve times for the 2x2 and 3x3?
