[DRAFT]Spy Demands a Soldier's Death

Postby Raionitu » Tue Jul 05, 2016 8:55 pm

Spy Demands a Soldier's Death

The Issue:
Last night, a Maxtopian spy was caught attempting to 'liberate' military blueprints from @@CAPITOL@@, and was summarily sentenced to be executed for treason. After the spy demanded to be killed by firing squad, various officials have come, asking how to execute the spy.

Validity:
Not valid for nations that banned capital punishment

Options:
[option]"He’s asked for an honorable death, and an honorable death he shall have!" states Colonel @@RANDOMLASTNAME@@. "Spies can be considered soldiers, so they should receive a soldier's execution. How else can we expect them to return the favor if they catch our spies. Not that we have any, of course."
[effect]Following new legislation in @@NAME@@ suspected spies are often shot on sight

[option]"NO!" cries the infamous Captain @@RANDOMLASTNAME@@. "The best way to stop spies, is to make them dread being here. Burn him at the stake, that’ll teach those Maxtopian dogs a thing or two."
[effect]Following new legislation in @@NAME@@ civil rights activists denounce the nation for its barbaric treatment of prisoners

[option]"Why are we executing them anyway?" asks intelligence officer @@RANDOMNAME@@. "We wouldn’t execute normal soldiers, so why don’t we just put him in prison until Maxtopia negotiates for his release? Besides, that gives us more time to ask some, ah, friendly, questions."
[effect]Following new legislation in @@NAME@@ foreign countries have to pay for their citizens release for even minor violations

*the italicized part is just a question of mine, not part of the actual option. question answered

Since the effect is the thing following the "Following new legislation in @@NATION@@, they are sentence fragments. Do not capitalize the effects since it looks more like "Following new legislation in [nation=short]Hansdeltania[/nation], Civil rights groups denounce Hansdeltania for its barbaric treatment of prisoners." There should be no reason why a random word has been capitalized, unless it is a specific group.

Another thing: you need stats that occur after the issue's legislation has been passed. Does my economy crash after burning the spy at the stake? Does secularism increase after shooting him? Does my Trout Fishing industry improve if I continue to detain him?

And to answer your question, yes, that is a valid variable.

Thanks for the advice.
The effects are complete sentences, I just forgot to add on the required beginning bit, but will add that to both my new drafts.
As for stats, I, really don't know what to put for those, so I figure I'd leave them blank for now.

Lack of stats is fine, they should be seen as optional in issue submissions, as they're broadly just suggestions anyway.

Great issue idea, btw.

Can you do a couple of things for us though:

1) Get rid of all the smart quotes and replace them with " straight quotes.

2) Revisit the effect lines. Please visit this link: https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=80 . This will give you some guidance as to how they should look, syntax-wise.

[effect]

You now have your first option. Next comes the [effect] line. The [effect] line is what will appear on the nation screen when a particular option is chosen. It should (preferably) be in the present or present perfect tense (for example, if you ban elections, your nation's page will include the line 'elections have been banned'. Other [effect]s include 'military funding has been stripped back' and 'organ donation is compulsory.

Currently, you have this:

[option]"Hey, you can't do that," says some guy. "This is just a made up option to use as an example."

When your option is written, you press the return key and write [effect]. You now have this:

[option]"Hey, you can't do that," says some guy. "This is just a made up option to use as an example."
[effect]

You then write your [effect] line. This should be one sentence that requires no punctuation, and does not begin witha capital letter. It should be one space away from [effect].

Thus:

[option]"Hey, you can't do that," says some guy. "This is just a made up option to use as an example."
[effect] people have been eating each other for some reason

You havw failed to mention that this is the regular method of execution for soldiers. Not everyone knows this.

I don't think that needs to be said explicitly. I wasn't aware this was the case myself, but I picked that up from the issue's subtexts.

Thanks. Looks like just removing the punctuation, but I might be wrong. Now then, *tries to find that elusive strait quote button*

I'm honestly not sure it even is still, I didn't dig that deep. This issue was largely based on something I remember about the execution of a Nazi leader after the war. He was sentenced to be hanged, but asked that as a soldier he be killed by firing squad.

Your description makes a leap in logic. It needs a line in between the two sentences saying he was convicted and ordered to be executed som way other than a firing squad, thus the plea to be shot like a soldier makes logical sense. Then it would open up a status quo-type option arguing something along the lines as We can't give the enemy the satisfaction of dying honorably.

Also make the pro-firing squad option be said by the spy. Throw in some good dying words like: "My only regret is that I have but one life to lose for my country."
