[SUBMITTED] The Glorious Micronation of Mike Ronation

Postby Wallenburg » Sun Jul 12, 2015 6:00 pm

The Glorious Micronation of Mike Ronation

Description: After deciding the current @@DEMONYM@@ government just wasn't good enough for him, Mr. Mike Ronation has decided to secede his house from @@NAME@@ and form his own nation! When the police tried to arrest him for later attacking the mailman for not properly going through customs, he declared war on the @@TYPE@@. Your top officials have gathered at a conference to settle the issue.

Validity: all nations.

[option]Your chief military advisor slams his fist down on the table. "WAR! This is absolutely ludicrous. We have to send a message to people crazy enough as Mr. Ronation. You do not secede from @@NAME@@. It's that simple. Some people might find tearing up his house with armor-piercing shells a little extreme, but it's all for the greater good. In fact, once this is all over, we should start doing regular patrols to make sure people don't follow in his footsteps. For the sake of @@NAME@@, of course."
[effect]people live in constant fear of their neighbor's house exploding
[stats]law and order spending increases, civil rights decrease, authoritarianism increases, compassion decreases, safety from crime increases

[option]”Whoa, whoa! Let’s not get too hasty about this!” pleads major political figure @@RANDOMNAME@@ whilst petting a pair of kittens. “Sure, I’m a little upset that Mr. Ronation doesn’t want to be part of our glorious @@TYPE@@--and that he tried to snap that mailman’s neck—but you have to look at it from both perspectives! He wants the freedom to live as he chooses, and I think that he has taken an admirable risk to show us what democracy truly means. There might be a few strange consequences to the economy, but isn’t the freedom to do what you want more important? Make secession legal instead of hunting people like Mr. Ronation down. Would you like a kitten?”
[effect]@@NAME@@ is rapidly losing land and resources as random bums create new countries across the nation
[stats]economy decreases, civil rights increase, political freedoms increase, authoritarianism decreases, niceness increases, safety decreases

[option]”Hey, man, that cat lady has a good point,” says a New Age spiritual leader, who has shown up uninvited. “In fact, we should make secession compulsory in @@NAME@@ so we can finally be free from the oppressive force of big government. It’s a bit of a paradox, but once it’s all done we can finally be free of petty politics and go back to being people of the earth!”
[effect]the @@DEMONYM@@ government has lost all power outside of its own doors
[stats]economy decreases, political freedoms increase, authoritarianism decreases, government size decreases, law enforcement decreases, safety decreases, taxation decreases

I like this. It's based on one of the more absurd and NationStates-y things people have tried to do in real life :)

I don't know if using Max Barry's name for this weirdo is a good idea, but then he's shown up before in some rather unusual contexts. (Apparently, he's winning a lot of beauty contests.)

Also, I want a kitten now.

Of course, the sensible answer would be "You want to secede? Okay, we'll just cut off all electricity, water, and gas services, and make you pay export taxes on anything you try to bring home from the store.".

The first option should probably improve safety from crime (though that'll likely happen as a side effect of increasing law & order spending).

Also speaking of stats, the second and third options have very similar stats, though the third would presumably be (much) more severe.

I like this issue. Although there is an issue dealing with secession already, it deals more with a region of @@NAME@@ leaving the country rather than an individual person.

Don't worry too much about the stats. I probably wouldn't worry too much about using Max Barry's name. As Trotterdam mentioned, he's been mentioned before and Jennifer Government is a part of NationStates canon. Although Max does seem to be getting around. How does he manage to win all those beauty contests?

Please don't demand things like this. We've made it exceedingly clear that stats are completely optional when writing drafts. Get the words right; we'll worry about balancing things on the backend.

I'll add "safety from crime increases" to option 1 when I can post off of mobile, but I'll have to rely on the editors to explore the twighlight zone of issues stats.

I'm less concerned about Max Barry being mentioned per se, and more about if trying to secede from the nation and attacking a mailman is something Max Barry would want to be associated with.

Winning beauty contests is at least a compliment, even if it's unclear how he's continuously winning contests meant for women in thousands of different nations.

Granted, Max Barry has a pretty good sense of humor and I wouldn't be surprised at all if he doesn't mind, but the subject matter still seems to have nothing whatsoever to do with the real person.

Whether or not it's a "problem" to use Max Barry, why would you? There's nothing inherently funny about the name or concept. It would be funnier to make it a vaguely topical reference, like "Mr C. Land" ("Sealand") or "Mike Ronation" ("Micronation") or something of that order.

Good idea. I'll edit as soon as I can.
The name shall be Mike Rowe.

Why am I suddenly reminded of scenes from The Simpsons when Bart prank calls Moe?

I think Golgothastan had the right idea. Mike Ronation would be better, seeing how there is at least one famous person named Mike Rowe:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Rowe

Unlike Max Barry, I doubt he'd appreciate his name being used in a satirical game like NationStates.

I like this. I like it a lot.

My only concerns are the use of the word bum in the second option's effect line. Somebody may find it offensive.

The other concern is a gameplay one about option 3. If the central government loses all control, then how could it legislate in other issues? That said, this is NationStates, so not all that realistic.

But yeah, I love this. Great work!
This nation is modeled on being my absolute worst dystopia imaginable. In no way do the Annihilators reflect my opinions, in fact I am totally against almost every single policy they enact.

Well, we have plenty of anarchies on NS, and they answer issues every day. I think option 3 would be an easy way to push towards the "anarchy" classification. And I suppose I'll go with Mike Ron Eishion or something. I don't want it to be too obvious.

Mike Ronation is fine. It's supposed to be funny. There's no law against that in a satirical game. :p

I don't get why the title says Mike Rowe now. What does the Discovery Channel have to do with Petoria?

Issues in anarchic nations are addressed by "a small group of community-minded individuals".

Mike Rowe Nation.

If you're naming a nation after yourself, the "nation" part (or equivalent) is going to be separate from your actual name.

I don't get it. Is it because it means "butt" in the UK? It's closer to "vagabond" or "hobo" in the US.

I don't find either expression offensive.
