Issue #3 Soap Box

Postby Tharis Strip » Wed Jun 10, 2009 4:19 am

I just think that this is interesting:

The Issue

The latest "Harry Potter" book to hit schools across Tharis Strip has stirred up the greatest controversy yet.
The Debate

1. "I quite enjoyed the book, until I got to the part where Harry summons evil demons to do his bidding," says religious leader Aaron Nagasawa. "Now that's just wrong. We need to restore some sense to this debate, by which I mean we should remove this book from the shelves, salt it thoroughly, and burn it."

2. Teachers union President Clint Jones says, "Come on, the book is fantasy! And it's a damn good read. I'd like the government to issue a statement of support for our teachers and librarians, so kids can enjoy good books without interference from religious wackos, like Christians."

This is the position your government is preparing to adopt.

If you're interested in my background and views:

Okay understand that I personally view myself as an open minded fundamentalist when it comes to my faith. I was raised by two ordained Southern Baptist ministers that had to face a similar issue at the church. My dad was approached by several of the congregation to try to get him to preach against such horrible blasphemies as portrayed in the Harry Potter series.
He went in front of the congregation on a Sunday night and explained to everyone there that everyone has the first amendment right to read or watch what they please. And that if no one's forcing anyone to watch it then it wasn't anyone's right to force them not to. So watch it, read it or don't it didn't matter. Harry Potter is a work of fiction and is a form of entertainment.
To me personally anything that you give energy to becomes real in some fashion or another. So if you see someone running around on a broom handle in robes in the middle of the street chanting to a field to try to open a door it's not Rowling's responsibility for writing a book, and it's no one's place to tell them that they're going to hell for it.

Couldn't it read:

2. Teachers union President Clint Jones says, "Come on, the book is fantasy! And it's a damn good read. I'd like the government to issue a statement of support for our teachers and librarians, so kids can enjoy good books without religious interference from religious wackos that throw around those stupid comic strips."

(cause believe it or not there are Christians out there that love Harry Potter ;) )
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost in time, like tears...in rain. Time to die.

Yes, it could read that. But that would make it an easy choice for most people, wouldn't it. The point is not to have that easy choice, being forced between imperfect options. And for some who don't read their options carefully, getting occasionally surprised by unexpected effects :)

True :D It's been years since I've done this and I forgot that the point is the issues can be impossible.

Actually, I frequently got the feeling that you were supposed to be "Damned if you do" anything other than dismiss the issue. Highlights that you can NEVER satisfy _all_ of the people. So you frequently make the choice that causes what you will guess will cause the least harm. Sometimes -- frequently, you guess wrong. Then you are reminded that choices have consequences.
