Welp, I'm an idiot

Postby Australian rePublic » Thu Dec 27, 2018 2:42 pm

Sydney and Queensland are in the same timezone, except during daylight savings time. I know that one of my 4 daily issues is due in at 8:20 am Sydney time (9:20 during DST), however, I am currently holidaying Queensland. I turned my laptop on for the first time this trip, and saw that my computer's time was said 8:30ish. I went to address my issue and saw that there was no notification for it, so I clicked on the issues page and saw that my issue wasn't due for 50 minutes or so. I thought "ha, that can't be right, my issue is due at 8:20 QLD time), and I was **this** close to lodging a technical ticket, until I realised that my laptop was set to Sydney time. It turns out it was 8:20's in Sydney, not Queensland (decpite the fact that I was using my phone (which is set to QLD time) like half an hour earlier, I knew what the time on the phone said, and I knew that it wasn't too long since I had used my phone. Welp, I'm an idiot (but atleast I didn't waste the admins' time in the technical forum). This made me realise that I've never taken this laptop anywhere where outside of Sydney's timezone (which is unusual). I might have taken it to QLD in July, but when there is no daylight savings QLD and Sydney are in the same timezone. I guess the lesson here is, don't assume that your laptop will automatically change timezones unless you tinker with the settings. Also, don't assume that you've tinkered with the settings. Actually, come to think of it, does my laptop automatically change for DST? I don't remember, if so, did I have to tinker with the settings for that to happen? If so, why didn't I also select "automatically change timezones"? Hmmm, interesting...

I am also putting together a timeline of Issues Editors: for me, the huge backlog of undocumented history got in a way that I have to prioritise individual tasks: that is, I cannot catch up on everything in one day.

Extra: I searched the forums, but cannot find when exactly the Altmer Dominion became an Issues Editor.

Aaand… we’re up to date with the current editors: the former editors list will take a bit longer because this requires us to go deep into the Jolt era.

I think there is a problematic player rights violation in Issue #566 "Drive My Car". In the description it says "... you are doing your best to calm down the angry crowd." That is totally untrue, I, the Holy Bigotry would just force my driver to drive away and if someone gets under my wheels it's definitely his problem, not mine.

I'm thinking more about the ancient history of nations, because most of the issues I receive are to do with modern problems. What about an issue where something (maybe a statue of a famous ancient figure) gets desecrated. The solutions could be something like teaching people about the history, abandoning the history for more modern ways, abandoning modernism for a more primitive life-style.

Thanks.

If something seems ostensibly wrong with an issue (objective, obvious spelling or grammar problems, suspected problems with validities or suspected problems with macros) -- and possible autonomy problems would probably fit there, too -- please could you report it in the Help Us Fix Old Issues thread.

That increases the chance it will be seen an answered by an editor, who are the people responsible for altering issues -- if required.

While @@LEADER@@ will remain parked long enough for the duration to answer the issue (so, no mowing down pedestrians), as he's there for a press conference, I do think you have a point about the way it's worded.

Raising this backstage for discussion.

EDIT: By the way, GI is an OOC subforum.

EDIT 2: Following taking this backstage, your leader is no longer "doing [their] best to calm an angry crowd".

They are now "being increasingly surrounded by the angry crowd." -- which involves your leader making no decisions at all.

Hmm... not sure if you need to go deep into the Jolt era. To the best of my knowledge, the first issues editors, in the proper sense, were appointed in 2009, after the first issues contest and after the Jolt forums era. Before this, as far as I can tell, it was only the admins and mods, mostly Sirocco, who edited issues.

Here's my personal list of the editors, not in any particular order, that I haven't updated in some time:

Speaking of contests, I seem to recall the contests for #911 and "wackiest issue" back in... 2017 >_>

Don't suppose there'd be another contest starting up anytime soon..? :P

We're not in need of a new editor right now, and if we were, we know who we'd be asking already. And no, not going to say. :)

It is a nice way to generate issue submissions, and the Player Submission pile is at an all time low (69 player-written issues, to 147 staff-written issues, which is why you're seeing such a high proportion of issues by staff being published right now) so it's worth considering, but right now running a contest probably isn't a good use of staff time.

The nature of issue authoring is that you tend to have a lot of submissions and a lot of would be authors, but most of the quality output comes from a small pool of quality writers. The trick here is getting those quality writers to stay active, and to find the next few quality writers.
